  • I used to go to the occasional class with a friend and it was always fun. But life gets in the way and given my career, flexibility wrt my workout schedule is key. Given how often I exercise (and need to exercise), I can't see how realistic a workout buddy would be (excepting spouses, but I'm not married). But I will say…
  • I have never tried spinning because it's an added cost to my gym membership and I avoid any extra costs. But they are popular in my gym. I have done step classes and it can be very enjoyable. Don't worry if you don't get all the steps. After a few classes, you will get the hang of it. I am not familiar with swimming…
  • For yourself, do you ski? Maybe a ski pass for the upcoming winter season? It seems that you're already set up, so maybe be a splurgey but still within the "active/physical" range. For myself, I would use the money for good running shoes, a new bike, a drop-in pass to my community centre (I have a privately owned gym…
  • OMG, the sighs! Those sighs of despair happen almost every time I decline some food or I order a "healthy" meal at a restaurant. I have one aunt who literally sighs every time she sees me exercise (like I was getting ready for a morning run during a reunion) or I decline an offer to eat. I have this thing with fruit--in…
  • I was in Pheonix a couple months ago, and I went to a place called Zoe's Kitchen. Apparently, it's a fairly large national chain (I'm Canadian--I'm surprise just how many American food chains I have never heard before). The food was great and pretty healthy.
  • Well, I'm a guy who takes aerobics classes, so I'm at the opposite end. Sometimes, I do get looks (I suspect that it is from women who are just new to the gym and are still intimidated) and I can't always shrug it off when the instructors says something like "Let's go, ladies!" but generally, it's okay. In terms of…
  • If anyone is seeing me running outside, it's because I'm traveling and my hotel doesn't have a gym or the treadmills in my condo building are occupied/not working. I MUCH prefer running on a treadmill. When I run outside, I feel I am running sooooo slow. I also like running while I'm catching up with the news. I like the…
  • While the majority here will say that you're not obsessive, it ultimately doesn't matter. It's not like your buddies were calling you obsessive. It was your wife. Was she joking or is she expressing her concerns? Does she work out with you? Does she have to take of the kids while you work out? Do you miss dinners? Whether…
  • When an aerobics class is taking place, there are still people using the floor to do their stretches. When there's a class, you leave and do your stretches somewhere else (like, I don't know, the stretching area!). When I'm in the stretching area and I can't place my mat anywhere because people have left their bags and…
  • Well, I think maintenance *is* harder than losing the weight. Losing the weight you get the positive reinforcement via the lower number on the scale, the occasional compliment, or trying on smaller clothes. With maintenance, you get comments like "You're still on a diet" or "You're too skinny" or "Eat this--you don't need…
  • If the best time to exercise for you is to sleep 3 hours, then exercise, and then go back to sleep--then so be it. I like to work out in the morning, but not when it results in me having to wake up early. If I wake up naturally (whether early in the morning or later), then I can work out. Of course, me waking up naturally…
  • Yes, me saying "Stop interfering in this person's business" is so hypocritical and evil!!! If the original poster wanted me to stop, then I would. But until then, if I think someone is being unfairly attacked/criticized, I'll attempt to defend.
  • If you're losing weight for other people, then did you feel you were fine at that weight? Then, yes, I think that's a problem. Why change if you think you are fine where you are?
  • A similar example, if I was at a party and saw someone eat a cupcake, would I come to that person and tell them they should eat an apple? Hell no! However, if this person came up to me and asked whether she could count that cupcake as part of her fruit intake because there was strawberry flavouring, I would make my opinion…
  • During the winter, my gym is cold and I run on the treadmill with a sweatshirt. During the summer, it gets so hot and I start sweating after a few minutes. My incline and speed are basically the same. I don't think sweat means you are working harder or less.

  • On the weekend or holidays, I get it done once I wake up. On a workday, I do it after I finish work and before dinner. As I get older, it seems I can only workout on an empty stomach (maybe a banana or something). I would have to wait several hours after dinner to exercise and by that time, I should be in bed.
  • I am the TV Guy too. I run on the treadmill and enjoy watching the news. I am politically minded and quite opinionated. So, I will go "He said what?!?!?" "OMG, what an idiot!", "Yeah, whatever!" "That's BS!" out loud while the newscaster is reporting some random story. I am also the Guy With the Million Magazines. I…
