  • By the way the counter people react, few other customers order a 6" sandwich without the chips and a drink. They're always trying to push the foot long and the meal deal on me when I order. Their pricing even drives people to do that for the "value."
  • I hate it when a guy that plows through the water with the legs hanging low, makes a pathetic little kick once a stroke, and does open turns beats me by about 3 seconds a length doing sustained laps.
  • You'd love swimming next to the high school swim team when they are working on butterfly then ;-) The good thing is that it does get better over time. Now I'm able to just skip a breath and quickly breath on the other side.
  • Welcome to MFP. I was where you were early last year. Like you I was never much of a swimmer, but now I'm doing at least a mile 3 times a week. I also do water aerobics twice a week and try to get some laps in before class.
  • I swim next to the high school swim team many days. There are a couple of guys that jump from the bottom of the pool up to the deck and land on their feet. I know I'll NEVER reach that point. But I did love the day when I could put my foot on the deck and step out.
  • Diet coke is a big time NO GO for me. I get SOOOO sick if I have even a tiny bit of it. I get the worst migraine headaches from even a tiny bit of it. Fortunately I can detect a it by taste even if a little is mixed in. Back when I was a regular drinker of coke, I'd sometimes notice some in regular coke, particularly with…
  • I used to be a major coca cola addict myself. I drank a *LOT* of the stuff. I gave it up for nearly a year a couple of years ago, then relapsed. I went back for about a year, and then I'm back not drinking it. I think it will stick this time. I really don't want diabetes. Now the stuff with HFCS just tastes nasty! I will…
  • I'd like to suggest a forum to you: www.talkaboutmarriage.com There are some great folks there, and several good sub forums with people who've gone through and are going through divorce.
  • I'd third on the comment about she may have been cheating. Some major red flags there. Cheaters often throw out the "you're cheating" card as a guilty projection. Especially if you had NO red flags from your end.
  • I hate it when someone is coming out of the locker room and headed for the pool and you can STILL smell the stink of their B.O.
  • I'm SOOOO impressed that you can (barely) pass me doing a 25 sprint as I crank out length #65.
  • Hmmm, I would never do that..... Subtle is more my style ;-)
  • I hate it when you see a giant lugie floating by on your first lap so you know for sure it wasn't yours.
  • I hate it when you've got a couple of big muscular guys doing buterfly practice in the next lane and I don't notice until I go to take a breath and get a face full of water instead of air. I hate it when 3 teenagers decide to jump in and do a three wide race against each other in the lane.
  • I agree about knowing the technique. It took me only a few months to beat even fit people if they didn't know their strokes well. I'm 1/2 the speed of the H.S. swimmers I swim next to, but most recreational lap swimmers can't keep up with me.
  • I agree with the others, it's just a matter of time and practice to keep doing them. I would do them in a pattern, say once every other lap at one end. Over time I just kept doing them more and more often. Part of it is being in better shape, and part of it is better technique. I'm usually able to time my breath so it's…
  • I was never competitive but did swim a lot when younger. I was a lifeguard, did mile swims and so on. I hit a peak of a few pounds higher than you. My first time back in the pool I was only able to do 9 laps. It took me about 3 months to be able to swim continuous, about 6 months to do my first mile. It was over a year…
  • My wife got me one of the ones that track every lap for Christmas and I LOVE it. I can go back and look at the lap times and see if I missed or double clicked so I know how many I really did. For example, if I see 1:10, 1:12,: 1:09, 2:20, 1:11, I know I missed one click. I figure over time I will get better at never…
  • It's not just water from the salt, it's also extra food in you too. Give it a couple of days, the most you can gain from one day of eating is under a pound.

  • Great progress. I don't know that I'd be wiling to show my stomach or back from when I was my heaviest. Good for you.
  • I'm 41 and it's amazing that I haven't either. I've gotten hurt pretty bad a couple of times I should have. Instead I've done major joint damage each time.
  • After 20 years of not swimming and eating bad that's about all I could do for a while. It took me 3 months to hit 1/2 mile without stopping. At about 5 months I could do a mile straight freestyle. It took me almost a year to be in good enough shape to be doing flip turns every lap.
  • I really want to be at 100lbs to go. It means dropping 9 pounds by then, still doable. Even better would be to be at 100lbs lost since my highest weight (long before MFP). That would mean losing 20lbs - a bit far to go. I hope to hit that by the end of January.
  • Well you added me - your description pretty much is me except for the dripping bag bit. I rented a locker a couple of months ago at the pool and it was money really well spent.
  • I was curious and weighed myself both ways a while ago. Between my clothes, my keys, wallet, cell phone and pocket knife it is 6.5 lbs. I did compare my home scale with a scale at the feed store one time. That scale is state certified so I figured it was a good one to use. I went right home and weighed myself in the same…
  • You might try putting some baking soda in your hair. It helps neutralize the chlorine so it doesn't keep attacking the hair after you're out of the pool. Put some in your hand and make a paste, then put it in your hair before you shampoo.
  • Congratulations! I'm going to have to do some shopping soon myself. I started out about 10 lbs shy of your initial weight. I've dropped from size 46 pants to size 42.
  • I've been eating a lot of what are my really bad trigger foods that I'd pig out on. I've been doing a really good job recently of eating only a tiny bit instead of stuffing myself.
  • As fat as America has become, I'm amazed when I run into places with a fixed table. They're tossing out a lot of their customers (heck, the highest paying ones too).
