  • I'm a terrible procrastinator. I should be running now, but I'm still reading forum posts. Training every day is a very optimistic goal from a standing start. Why not start really gradually? The mind craves to "win". If you set a few small goals, you'll get a few small victories to overcome your motivational difficulties.…
  • I'm Ectomorph it turns out, though I don't think I'd heard the word prior to today. Anyone know of any body-type specific dietry/training advice for ectomorphs? Is it as simple as "eat more, run less, lift heavier", or is there some secret?
  • Yeah, that. I got a milkshake called, "Precision Engineered (Hardcore Series) TYPHOON - with added Creatine". Cost £40 for the tub. Got it home and thought, 'What kind of gym monster am I turning into?'.
  • Are you taking a multivitamin? If not consider it. I think it's B12, but I'm not sure, that's associated with the release of energy. You could be eating the perfect amount of energy foods, but without the vits, they are unusable to your body. Also, try to find the energy/time graphs of various foods, and eat them so that…
  • You could try adding it to MFP before eating it, rather than after. This means that you can see the impact of your next snack before you actually comit to eating it. You could also try keeping a list of things that you didn't eat today. When my wife comes home from shopping, she never mentions how much she spent, but…
  • It doesn't really answer your original point, but I saw that you don't really know how to strength train at home. I'd consider the British Army Fitness Guide by Sam Murphy. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/085265118X Despite what the title suggests, you don't have to already be fighting fit to embark upon the programme in the…
  • Awesome progress. You say that you're half way there, but I reckon if you were to maintain your current shape you could call that a victory in it's own right. All depends on what your total goals are, I spose.
  • I'm a big fan of risotto. Once you get the method for that down, you can do a wide variety of meals by just making variations on that.
  • wmass97 has come to the conclusion that every married man has a private email account that the wife has no knowledge of. Getting back to the point in of this thread: Word.
  • Good stuff. The times when it's difficult are the times when you're winning.
  • Although caffeine is medically an appetite suppresant, it might have other effects when taken in the evening. Particularly if it causes someone to stay up longer into the night, exposing themself to the temptation of boredom-eating. Might be worth keeping this in mind.
  • Try Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on Playstation 3. I once sat down of an evening for a quick 5 minute battle, before I knew what was what, I had played all the way through dinner time until the middle of the night, by which time I was too tired to cook.
  • I had a bowl of rice crispies with protein shake instead of milk. It was epic. Never tried it with pancakes. My wife makes pretty nifty dropscones, we'll have to try the protein enhanced version next time we make them. Also, I wonder if it would be possible to make a protein-rich bread? You could even chuck some raisins or…
  • Nice. All we need now is a cat with a lime to complete the party.
  • Cheeseburgers are pretty protein rich, as there's different sorts of protein in the beef and in the cheese.
  • I use Precision Engineered Hardcore Series Gainer in Vanilla flavour. Although a gainer isn't suitable for everyone's needs the flavouring is probably the same accross their product range. This one tastes just like normal vanilla milkshake, worth looking up 'Precision Engineered'.
  • If you're in the UK, you could try NHS Direct. Although the call handlers arn't doctors they might be able to explain or elaborate upon your doctor's advice for you. I think their number is 0845 4647, but worth googling to be sure. It might be that you can take up some low intensity excercise such as Tai Chi (sp?) or Yoga…
  • I've been doing the following circuits as part of my weekly training. 3 x 12 of each: 1. Chin up. (I can't do 3 x 12 of these, so I do 3 x 6) 2. Tricep Dip 3. Press Up 4. Sit Up 5. Dorsal Raise 6. Squat 7. Lunge The list has come from an old Army recruitment poster, so hopefully will be fairly well rounded.
  • You could try doing straight legs assisted pull ups. From the British Army Fitness Guide (Sam Murphy, 2009): "Place a broomstick over two sturdy chairs that are placed close together. Take hold of the broomstick with an underhand grip, arms shoulder-width apart, and lift your body clear of the floor, keeping knees bent,…
  • I used to train a lot in the evenings, and was often the last person out of the gym. I got a bit of motivation by looking at the clock, and seeing the member of staff sweeping up, thinking 'he's going to kick me out any minute now, better finish the sesh before then so I haven't wasted my journey'.
  • Words of wisdom indeed. I spent a lot of last week listening to Blue by Gemini and Organ Donor by Zomboy. Top work out tunes. This week OTOH, I've gone the other way. Listening to a lot of Sublime, Iration and Pacific Dub.
  • Consider Amino Acids pills. Protein is made up of chains of Amino Acid molecules, only there are several different types of Aminos and the protein needs to contain the right mix of each of them. If the body does not have enough of any one of them, it can fail to properly build muscle mass, even if a substantial quantity of…
  • I'm currently reading up on creatine, I haven't made my mind up about it yet, although I regularly took it for about 3 months last year. My experiences were that it largely increased my endurance in the gym, enabling me to work out for longer without muscle fatigue. I recently read an article by Men's Health magazine, in…
  • I heard that the diuretic effect of the caffeine in tea was less than the hydrating effect of the water in the tea. So a cup of tea is less hydrating than the same quantity of water, but still adds, rather than removes, water from your system. (So I heard)
  • I've gone through a few phases of giving up the gym for a few months, then trying to get back into the habit. For me, the first two weeks of getting back into it bring a slight sickness sensation and also sometimes a metallic taste in the mouth. I've found that the feeling goes away after a couple of weeks, around about…
  • You could try a 50/50 mix of water and fruit juice, or a dilute mix of sugar free fruit squash. A lot of recent research questions the long-asserted view that water is the healthiest drink. For example, this BBC article looks at the benefits of tea vs water. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/5281046.stm
  • therealangd has hit the nail right on the head. A lot of dietary changes in a short time are unlikely to yeild positive results, and may even panic your body into stockpiling resources. Better to pick a system that you think you can maintain, and try it over a couple of months. Dont forget as well, that any measurements…
