  • Hope all goes well. If the HRM caused you to get something seen that needed seeing then it turned out to be a good purchase of epic proportion. Food for thought for those of us who have never bothered with one.
  • I think also, the fluid intake is probably good for waking up, as is handling anything hot. I suspect the brain goes, "come on hands, look lively, remember the last time we handled the kettle in our sleep". Also, sugar in coffee is very accessible form of energy, and as has already been pointed out, the ritual is a pretty…
  • I normally log everything in KG, and compare the weeks average to the previous weeks average to decide if I'm making progress. There's no point losing data by not logging a number just because it's not sufficiently different to the prior figure.
  • I've been listening to a lot of Dubstep lately. I like "Blue" by Gemini and "Pirate Hooker" by Zomboy. Also, if you're into rock music, always worth giving AC/DC another look. "Back in Black" has some pretty good lyrics for work-out stuff. For traditional gym-fodder music, can't do much better than "Sandstorm" by Darude.…
  • I got a toy that looks like a playstation controller. You hold it at arms length and it beeps and you and tells you how fat you are/arn't. It cost me about £30 ($40-50, I think). Seems to be reasonably consistent (+- about 5%).
  • I've always worn helly hansen base layer shirts for running, and very rarely feel too hot, even double layered. The fabric feels a little like silk, except that it wicks away sweat, and often feels very cool. If HH are not in your local sportswear shop, try UnderArmour. Failing that, both brands should be in your nearest…
  • If you've been a vegi for ages, a quick word of caution. Start eating meat slowly, a little each week. Your weaker herbivore digestive system might take time to adjust to our omnivore ways.
  • Main goal at the minute is to improve general fitness. I'm measuring that in terms of 1.5 mile run time and max pressups / situps / chin ups in a single set, and also in terms of weight gain (aiming for 15% increase) At the minute, I'm using a military fitness programme that's rather generic. I'm not sure why circuits are…
  • I havn't heard that either, but I'd be keen to hear from a nutritionist who knows. The pedant in me wants to say, "Too much" of anything is bad for you, that's what "too much" is, but I guess the real question is how much tuna is too much? And is it a quantity that could be sensibly consumed in a day?
  • I get the same, and I'm a gainer too, so it might not go away with fat loss (my BF% is about 13). I find it's more noticable when I've been slouching, so addressing posture might help. Might be worth investing in a kneeler instead of your office chair?
  • I know where you're at with the wrists and elbows. I'd love to have stronger looking forearms. At the minute, I feel they let me down a bit when I wear short sleeved shirts and stuff. Being a chap, and also not into the punk rock/goth style, big bracelets and stuff probably wouldn't suit me so well. I wonder if anyone…
  • I havn't heard of those myself, but I reckon with the less well known brands, money stretches a lot further than it does with Nike or Adidas. Not saying Nike don't make a good running shoe, but their entry level shoe does a lot more for the eye than the foot. Edit: Worth mentioning, not all unknown brands are any good. If…
  • If you're making yourself miserable to be healthy, you might be robbing Peter to pay Paul. Why not give Zumba or Body Combat a go? There's bound to be something that's both fun _and_ healthy out there.
  • I absulutely love my Asics Gels. When they broke, I got a new pair exactly the same. They come in a variety of prices, but the cushioning and support on all of them is top notch. For a beginner, look no further. As you get more into it, you might consider going to a profesional running shop (there's one in london, "Runners…
  • Be careful not to attach too much significance to the speedometer on the treadmill, as most runners are much faster on it than they are in real life. Last year, I thought I was getting epic-quick, but then measured my speed on the road and was a bit disapointed. It's probably consistent, just not accurate.
  • Work on your 12 minute mile (very slow) pace. This is an important pace as for most joggers it's the cross over between walking and jogging. Start with a really gentle jogging on the spot, then ease it forwards. Think as you're going along, "could I be using any less effort whilst still being jogging?". It sounds like an…
  • Definately agree. Half the stuff that is just 'banter' on military forums would make jaws drop round here. It's a shame that a bi-product of the politeness is to make moderately pointed or slightly sharp remarks (whenever they occur from time to time) seem much ruder than they are intended, by comparison.
  • Simple is a subjective term. A couple of years ago, I tought my grandma how to use google. Google had existed for 13 years by that point, and my grandma had owned a computer for four of those. She just hadn't seen good reason to google anything. Some of the people here might be of the same ilk, and represent the "old…
  • My tuppence worth is thus: I've been posting on these forums for about a fortnight and already I've noticed some odd trends. Ordinarily, I spend my time lurking on Slashdot, military forums and underground music/sports communities. Despite their diverse themes, I've noticed a common set of social rules on those forums that…
  • In Italy, I doubt the universities teach biochemistry in English. Just a thought. Edit: synchroposted with the OP. Oops.
  • Given that everyone is different, the machines (gym and HRM) offer at best an aproximation. I think the exact number of cals isn't so important as the trends. As long as you are consistent with which type of measurement you use, you can build in an adjustment based on your results. Say for example you follow the HRM and…
  • I work different shifts each day, so I'm a midnight to midnight person. Over the course of several weeks, any anomolies will hopefully iron out. On my first night shift of the week I usually eat about 4000 cals, but the average for the week is around about my target.
  • I think MFP was designed primarily for people with slower metabolisms, so the calorie goals might be a little low. I set my goal to 3000, with 20% protein, and have been gaining a little.
  • If I'm truly honest, I'm motivated quite a lot by appearance. There's copies of Men's Health on my coffee table. It would be hard not to be. Also, I'm a bit worried that I'm a shade under weight for optimum health. I occasionally get tired earlier in the evening than I would like to, and I don't really have the energy to…
  • Try looking up Kwonkicker on youtube. He's a martial artist who does a few targetted videos. I do his flexibility work out twice a week, but he also does an upper body one, a lower body one and I think a core one. Most of the excercises just need an open space and a matt or cushion,
  • That was the first post by that dude that I read. I was thinking, "that dude seems seriously thoughtful", until I saw that the cleverness had been met with incredulity. Now I'm confused.
  • I'm struck by the genius of eating ice to deal with an oral fixation. How many other people might have dealt with the same fixation by eating hard candy or popcorn or some other snack? Ice as a snack: 0 cals, 0 carbs, 0 sugar. Good stuff.

  • It's a bit of a hacky workaround, but you could fashion a cradle for when you don't want it to register movement. Look at old BBC photos of radio stages, where the microphones are suspended in springs. You could cut an old water bottle in half, and put the bit inside, suspended by a couple of rubber bands. Bit hacky, as I…
  • I have friends who are in the army. Strange folk they are. They have a saying, "Pain is weakness leaving the body." Probably doesn't help much.
