  • Oh, and Chia seeds. There's a lot of good fat & protein in those tiny seeds.
  • Aside from making sure to set the scale on a hard surface, and making sure the batteries are fresh; a scale that fits your need shouldn't be expensive. This one's popular, and has done me good for 3+ years, including one battery change: https://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Digital-Bathroom-Lighted/dp/B001KXZ808/
  • Michelle, Go ahead and ask the question. As soon as you do, people will be tripping over themselves to answer it. I guarantee it.
  • I'm relatively new at paleo, so I've not gotten past the most basic smoothies: Coconut milk Frozen fruit (mix and match) . . . which is good enough for me, for the time being. I still need to work up some courage to throw veggies in--I know a lot of people do it but I still associate 'smoothie' with 'fruit'.
  • A variation: Set a weight goal, and a target date. If you don't reach that goal, you must MUST make a donation to an organization you hate. One platform for this "motivation-by-loss-aversion" is http://www.stickK.com , and might be worth it if everything else fails.
  • No chips OR salsa in the house. If I get one I'll want the other. Both = disaster.
  • If it helps, I've found some success in a philosophy I call 'paleo-ish'. The way I see it, if your 'normal' is to eat healthy, you're going to be successful. Because that's exactly what most people preach: healthy habits; and they're right. If hunger hits you this afternoon, will you default toward junk food, but be forced…
  • Your friend's statement is self-defeating, and to let that define him/her is a mistake. Your friend says "I can never be slim"; I say, "Not with that attitude." And therein lies exactly what needs to change: your friend's attitude (and maybe a few habits).
  • The only site I use (other than sites linked to from Google searches) is the website of Dr. Steven Halls (St. Mary's Hospital, Camrose, Alberta CA), which has a bunch of weight and BMI calculators, and a few scholarly articles. http://halls.md I've used Halls' website for over a decade; it's simple but useful for me. EDIT:…
  • Off the top of my head, without looking, I can recite 9 digits. You might want to re-evaluate your '20 digit' standard--I think it's unrealistic. Of course, anyone can go to Google (some people have). Unless that's the point.
  • The more weight you have to lose, the faster it comes off at the beginning. I've been losing and gaining for years, and just recently started losing again. I'm down 6 pounds this week, in fact--and I know that won't last. Losing 4 pounds in the first week feels good--and I'd take that as a sign that you're doing it…
  • 6 pounds from my checkpoint! Whenever I post my weight goals, I've started including my lifetime high. It's encouraging to see how far you've come. I also prefer to shoot for frequent, small checkpoint goals. I probably won't even schedule my ultimate goal until I'm within 10 pounds of it. LIFETIME HIGH: 293 (38.1 BMI) 3/7…
  • My wife eats the same way I do, and we both have that problem (she more than I). I'd contend that any restriction of processed food might yield the same result. But as opposed to writing my own rulebook, I choose 'paleo'.
  • With the right seasonings you can make your chicken taste pretty much however you like. Me? I just use hot sauce.
  • I should clarify before I make someone mad by appearing to not bow at the 'CICO' altar: CICO is king. But food habits (that is, repetition of healthy food choices) can make it easier to meet your calorie goal.
  • Two extremes here: 1. Eating "perfectly healthy" (whatever you decide that to mean); and 2. Eating your calorie goal in Twinkies. We're human; we're not going to eat perfectly healthy. It's just not going to happen. By the same token, eating 1X00 calories in snack cakes is just unsustainable. But I believe that, beyond…
  • I weigh in every morning. And I recommend weighing every morning provided you look at the trend--NOT day-by-day results. It's like the stock market. You know that, long-term, the stock market goes up. Obviously the market goes up and down, but it generally trends up. In the same way, if you're trying to lose weight there's…
  • My wife's on a paleo kick and I've got my spring league starting soon. That's a good enough 'why' for me.
  • When you say you're logging 'each of the 40 days', does that mean you take the Sabbath off? Or is it really a 46-day challenge?
  • A word for Paleo: My wife and I are on day 4 of what I'll call "paleo-ish". Basically we eat lean meats, vegetables, some fruit, but occasionally (every few days) we allow ourselves to eat one thing we really want. For example, tomorrow is our church's fish fry, and I wholly intend to eat their fried fish (the 'fried'…
  • Low calorie surprise (which some of you already know): Egg whites. 5g protein and 25cal per "egg". Take 4 of those, scramble them with cheese and bacon bits, and you have a surprisingly filling breakfast at under 200 calories in all.
  • community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/30-couch-to-5k-running-program-c25k I'm doing C25K running around in my neighborhood. I have a treadmill in my basement, but I hate it with the passion of 1000 burning suns.
  • 50. But I'll likely never get there. My ultimate goal is BMI 27, which at my height is 208 pounds.
  • Is it hoops season yet? Valparaiso Crusader fan/alum here.
  • About 150 calories a day--enough for a craft beer of choice. That's one of very few non-negotiables of this weight loss thing: I WILL have my evening beer.
  • This thread will inevitably turn into a combination of "eat whatever fits your goals" (which isn't helpful) and "Here's what I'm eating for breakfast." So here's what I'm eating: Toast, protein shake and coffee. Toast because I like toast. Protein shake because I struggle to get enough protein in my day without it. Coffee…
  • 8/1: 258 8/8: 252 (possibly a fluke) 8/15: 254 8/22: 252 (not a fluke) 8/29: 253 8/31: I was sabotaged this month by business trips, including three+ hour dinners, other evening work requirements, and literally not enough hours to also work out and get a full night's sleep. Satisfied I lost "something" this month, it's…
  • That soda is killing you. If you substitute something with 0 calories (preferably water--though diet soda would suffice) and replace that Twix with a 100-calorie snack of some sort, that would get rid of your calorie surplus.
  • Not judging. But if the other site was working why did you have to change sites?
  • Most people who struggle to stay on a weight loss program know what to do to lose weight--they just don't do it. To get a person to start (or restart), he/she either needs a strong enough fear--or a strong enough desire--to sway their decisionmaking, day by day, until their diet/exercise plan becomes their routine.…
