What they all said...and...think about the saying, "Happiness is not a destination but a means of travel." Smile at folks you see, follow the laugh lines on Facebook, get out and play in the sun or rain, and when someone asks how you are, tell them you're fabulous, perhaps a little mysteriously. They'll wonder what you're…

All the other comments, plus...find someone here to "run" with. A bunch of rowers have their own category here, and we participate in virtual challenges together. It's really fun, because we share common goals of weight loss (or maintenance) and then we cheer one another on when we note that others have been meeting or…

Hannah and Harmony, welcome! Fun to see you here. We'll follow the water team as you go through the season, Harmony, if you'll give us the links to your team.

As others have said, "Be your own hero" is the top take-away line from this post, though the whole thing is worthy of printing and framing. What a model you are to your own kids and your community. It's hard not to take rude comments personally; instead of spiraling down, you added those to your motivation toolkit. Thank…

You lost weight pretty fast back then. If you set yourself up to lose half a pound a week on MFP, it will not feel so harsh to your body. Take baby steps. Start by just being honest and recording every bite you eat, every time. That will help get your brain's attention. Soon you'll start to choose foods based on what makes…

Thanks to Mrs. Peterson's close watch on this thread, the MFP Virtual Team Challenge is all set up and ready for you to sign up! It will be fun! We'll get some further suggestions going soon, but for now, any interested parties should get themselves registered on Concept 2 and start logging meters. If you average 7,000…

Nice going, tjlove!!

I would agree with those who say to add in strength training, especially as you get above 50. Otherwise, burning 200-300 calories is an awesome way to keep yourself flowing (in more ways than one). But if you want to add something else, may I suggest rowing, if you belong to a club? There is a rowing forum with lots of…

I haven't checked the articles, but the basic I keep coming back to is that you should feel your lats hanging on the handle as though you're a kid hanging on the monkey bars. That requires you to keep your body in the forward position until you've pushed through with your legs. Then you can start your swing. I apologize if…

Welcome to even more of you...heh, heh...looks like we're going to have a Team come this holiday... If you're working out at a club, start being a squeaky wheel for upkeep on the Concept2 machines. (sorry) If they're creaky at all, the chain needs oiling. If they don't pull from the catch (when your hands are nearest the…

My husband and I have both lost weight successfully using MFP. We eat back our calories, but in the beginning we both measured really carefully, taking the higher caloric option if we wanted to use someone else's counts. We also estimated on the low side for exercise (calling our workout moderate, not intense, for…

Welcome, JB! We'll be pulling you into our little Holiday plan, come winter! By then, you'll probably have lost all your weight and be in fighting trim!

Howard, I'm betting we're ARC buddies, because I don't know any other team that would be getting the boats out now. If you would friend me, it would be great...some of the people here were interested in the talk we had at the second time trial when you were sharing your lactic acid threshold workout. They wanted to know…

Welcome to the MFP rowing group! I just recently heard about dragon boats, and that sounds like fun! Congrats on the 4-pack. Rowing will sure do that for you. I think you have found your group for next year's challenges!!

When I hit my goal weight, I stopped logging for a while. I don't know whether that's what you've done, and if so, how you know what your intake is, but I can tell you that I started to gain weight steadily. I didn't really have a feeling for how to eat without logging and maintain. Now, six months after getting back on, I…

I LOVE Feldenkreis, AND rowing. You are doing the right things, and I hope you feel better every day.

I'm about to post a partial review of a book called "Fat Chance." If you read it (the book, not the review!), you will understand why these foods call to you. I just have to figure out where to post the review!

Wow...I just dropped in too, and it's lovely to see the bunch of new names/faces. Be sure to friend one of the old-timers (yeah, we've been working together since around November 2012, so "old-timers" might not be the right word), and then you'll end up getting connected to everyone. Hmm...I think we might be able to hit…

Think outside the box...a locally-made, whole-wheat tortilla is only 110 or 120 calories, and is fun to roll up around different fillings. Corn tortillas are wonderful when heated up in a towel in the microwave, and they're only 110 for two tortillas. Dave's bread is wonderful. Get it at Costco if you can to save money.

The biggest issue I have as a (mostly) vegetarian – I eat Alaskan salmon because I live in Alaska and love wild fish, and I'll eat a little bird on special occasions – is that when conferences offer vegetarian meals, unless I get in line right away, the meat eaters will take their portion and the "vegetarian" option as…

I'm 54, well past menopause, and it's almost a year since I started here. I kept gaining weight each year, taking off a little, and then inching up again. A friend suggested this site. What works is eating fewer calories than you need, but it's hard to figure out what that means without eating too little and scaring your…

I'd say it's aerobic! Every HR article I read says the same thing: if your heart registered it, and it wasn't a cell tower or another heart monitor passing you, that's your MHR. I have a neat gadget on my iPhone that takes my heart rate and also lets me put in my LHR and MHR, then gives me the figures for 60/70/80/90% so…

Wow! More rowers...and you are all hard core!! If you'd like to "friend" up with other rowers, you can friend me and that will help get you in touch with the rest. We have a very nice little community going. Many are switching to on-water soon, or from erg to biking, but next winter I bet we're going to be trying to be…

I found another interesting article on this page and tried the fitness test at the end of the article: http://m.runnersworld.com/running-tips/how-use-heart-rate-monitor?page=single ...or rather, I did as much of it as I could. I managed four complete cycles, but had been thinking in terms of 20 minutes, rather than…

Awesome! Your pictures make it clear how much it can help to be in physical-muscular shape. I'm sure that part of it is your wonderful, relaxed attitude. I love MFP! Who knew that a site of people working toward common goals could share so much information and help us realize how much we can take charge of our lives so…

Sorry no one helped...but it looks like you succeeded. Hurrah!!

If your gym has a rowing machine, work up to rowing 25 minutes a day. Rowing is more for legs and back than arms, but if you watch some videos to get the right form going, you'll sculpt everything.

Awesome, mcppsl! We needed you last month in the Challenge! Maybe next January?! I think we're going to be raring to go then... Here's what I did yesterday. It was a workout that McRower sent me when I couldn't decide what to do one day. It nearly killed me. You asked for a suggestion for a workout....why don't you try a…

Pick two or three of the pieces of advice to follow. Make one of them calling someone who will help you keep yourself safe, and please post here every few hours when you're up.

Oh Elle, I hope you're going to find yourself feeling better and better. We have tests coming up and I haven't done them since college (34 years ago!) so I have no idea how to face them. One site said that if a person is a slow-twitch kind, it's best not to play games with speed. I can average about 2:15 for a while…
