  • You don't really mention the rest of your workout except bench. Are you doing a formal program? Everyone here likes stronglifts. I recently switched to the All Pro beginner workout as described on the bodybuilding.com forum. It is supposedly better when you are on a deficit. Summary of the program: A Simple beginner's…
  • Deadlifts by definition put the weight down, that is if it is the standard deadlift. Stiff legged or Romanian deadlifts do NOT put it down each time. To increase the weight, then you.... increase the weight. Next time you lift, add 5 or 10 pounds to the bar. mike
  • Good summary here on mfp: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/560459-stronglifts-5x5-summary Another summary: http://hardgainernomore.blogspot.com/p/sl-5x5-workout.html Generally start with the bar, except for deadlifts and Rows. If you can't do the bar, then you might have to start with dumbells. Mike
  • You might try this: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/shoulder_shocker Mike
  • I go to anytime. They have all the requisite fitness gear, weight machines, free weights, squat cage, ellipticals, bikes, treadmills, etc. The fact they are open 24 hrs is great for me due to my irregular work schedule. It is always clean, they have individual showers as ooposed to a locker room. No complaints. Mike
  • No studys have shown that these things actuallly work. (talking about chondroiten, etc). A good multivitamin plus calcium is all the supplement you need. While inital studies looked promising, later ones show minimal benefit. http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/supplement-guide-chondroitin Mike
  • l totally missed the paraplegic reference, so sorry to come off flippant. I saw the very athletic part, and not doing legs is a chronic BRO problem, and I jumped in without thinking. I have recenlty started the ALL PRO beginners routine, which I like a lot. This is supposedly better for people on a cut, so do a google…
  • So sorry your friend was born without any legs. Mike
  • Hypothyroidism can cause problems with losing weight, so the first thing is to make sure YOUR HYPOTHYROIDSIM is adequately treated. When was the last time you had your thyroid function checked? This article talks about some things that can help: http://thyroid.about.com/od/loseweightsuccessfully/a/weight-loss-diet.htm Mike
  • Shift work can be very demanding, especially when you can't sleep. I have the same problem. Here are the standard things to try: 1. Sleep hygeine. Do nothing in the bed except sleep and sex. No caffeine for 8-10 hours before bed. The room has to be very dark, if you don't have blackout shades, or can't make it dark get one…
  • I just switched from stronglifts to the the allpro beginner program because I had pretty much stalled out with stronglifts. Supposedly the allpro program is more "forgiving" on a cut. Too early to tell for sure, but I do like the program so far. Read through the forum posts to get a bunch of good info.…
  • I posted a link to an article about supplements the other day. Should be able to search for it. Mike
  • HIIT instructions are all over the map when you do an internet search. Most of the ones I read seemed to call for 8 cycles. What I did was the 5 minute warmup, 8 cycles, then do regular cardio for a total of 30 minutes. I started slow, and now have worked up to 30 sec on 30 sec off, and am now increasing my cycles, will…
  • The 15 rep may be part of the problem. 15 is usually more endurance than strength or hypertrophy. If you increased the weight to the point that you can only do 8-10, and add another set, I bet you would start to progress again. But definitely look into getting into a program that has been proven to give results. Article…
  • Things to look at include protein intake, sleep, and perhaps a deload week or a week off. What type of program are you doing, how many sets and reps etc? If you are not doing a structured program, you might look into stronglifts, Madcow, Wendler 3/2/1, or allpros beginner routine. I stalled out on stronglifts and just…
  • Your heart rate should definitely not go that high with very mild exercise. Are you talking about just walking, pedaling very slowly on a bike or what? Having recently delivered, another cause might be anemia. Did you lose much blood when you had the baby? Take a look or have someone else look at you to see if you look…
  • I hear salutation to the sun is a good overall stretch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IUyY9Dyr5w Mike
  • I use the cheap starter t shirs available at walmart, seem to work pretty well. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Starter-Men-s-Short-Sleeve-Wicking-Tee-2-pack/23319992?findingMethod=rr#Item+Description Mike
  • The only thing I could think of is they have some type of problem with their legs and can't physically workout their legs. The legs are some of the largest muscles on the body, and the purpose of doing aerobic exercise would be either to a. lose weight or b. increase cardiovascular health. Bothof which are accomplished…
  • I was at the gym the other day and a guy was doing his squats in the rack. He failed, hurt his back and was stuck under the weight with the bars set at the lowest position. Had to have help to get the weights off. He hobbled out of the gym, not been back since. A couple of days later a girl was squatting with the bars at…
  • That certainly is not putzing, but you might consider going up in weight and down in reps to 8-10. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the putzing around phrase, but I see a lot of posts of women that are doing the pink dumbells. Mike
  • You don't really specify what exactly you are doing with the weight lifting. Are you lifting heavy or are you putzing around with 5 pound weights with 20 reps? There are plenty of threads on here about weight training. As to the cardio, the biggest thing there is the effect it is having on your heart rate. you can either…
  • I read an article recently that stated that the health benefits of running seemed to be lost in those that ran more than 20 miles a week, so cutting back seems like it is a good idea if it is not something you love. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323330604578145462264024472.html Mike
  • The poster that mentioned aspirin is on the right track. You can try all the topical treatments mentioned, but sunburn will feel much better if treated with a non steroidal anti inflammatory medication. OTC there is aspirin of course, but to get up to the anti inflammatory dosage you can get lots of side effects.…
  • Everyone here will point you to either stronglifts 5x5 or new rules of lifting. There are many videos of the exercises on youtube and you can review those before you start. So you think you can deadlift, so you think you can squat etc are good. Certainly a session or 2 with a trainer could be helpful to help with your…
  • One other thing to mention is to be sure to have adequate rest between sets. unlike a lot of other programs that only have a minute or so rest between sets, SL can require from 3 to 5 minutes. mike
  • I did stronglifts 5x5, then switched to 3x5 when I stalled out. i continued to make progress until I could not increase my bench over 130 or ohp over 100. I have just switched over to the ALL Pro beginner workout to see if that will help get me progress again. So, if you are still doing 5x5, and stalled out after several…
  • I would trust the package. Perhaps what happened is that the company reformulated the product since it was entered into the database, and that affected the calorie count. Mike
  • Your weight will go up and down, somewhat unpredictably. This is why noone really recommends daily weighing, as it is easy to get discouraged. The fact that it went down every day for several days is probably a fluke, and you will freak out tomorrow when you weigh yourself and find that all those pounds have returned. Mike
  • If your thryoid is so low that you have to take thyroid hormone, no supp[lement on earth will "stimulate" it enough to enable you to get off the thyroid hormone. Mike
