  • I honestly don't think it matters to the average joe, but I like to eat something about an hour before working out (carbs for energy) and have some sort of protein an hour after for muscle recovery.
  • I did it for almost 2 years and it was my first experience with anything to do with lifting. I learned a lot, and I'm glad I did it, but ultimately it was too much upper body for me...I didn't feel like it was a good fit for the body type I was/am going for. Now I do Orange Theory which also incorporates lifting but more…

  • Multi Fish oil Vit B-12 Vit D Biotin BCAA drink during and just after workouts 1 smoothie a day with scoop of whey protein, scoop of super greens, kale and fruit (mostly as the last meal of day) Note: I don't think a smoothie is necessary but I see it as a dessert and it helps with my sweet tooth. I also eat very healthy…
  • Heavy weight lifting and tight diet (keeping to macros) is the best way! No cheating, and if you really want to get crazy, no alcohol. :o Throw in a little HIIT 2-3x a week will be a good addition.
  • You seem to have it down, no magic way, just adjust your calories and give it a little time! Done this plenty of times when I gain weight on vacation, etc..
  • I do believe this was accurate for the most part when I first started. Now that I'm pretty fit, I find I can maintain everything around 60/40. I have a lot of muscle now, and I work out 5+ times a week for an hour a time doing high intensity and strength workouts, so I have changed my metabolism. I also agree genetics play…
  • First off I highly doubt your calorie "allowance" is 1000. That is WAY too low. As far as your other question, weight lifting does give you more bang for your buck, as the OP put it. I burn more calories and my heart rate is higher doing heavy lifting than when I'm on the treadmill. (I wear an HRM and my HR is tracked…
  • You look great! How many calories have you been doing for the reverse diet?
  • I'm the same way. I usually prep for a vacay by eating really healthy/lower calories a couple of weeks before, then I can let loose, then I come back and get back to regular eating. I find that even if the scale is higher, it is gone within a week. It is a great thing! It's called moderation!

  • Yes, every single week!
  • I still track 80% of the time and have been in maintenance for 12 years.
  • Agree with what the others say, you can't focus on the scale/weight because that will change. I have been in maintenance since my son was a little over a year old, 12 years ago now, when I "got my act together". During this time I have never gone back up to my high weight (~125/130lbs) BUT I have been anywhere from 100-115…
  • I sprint in times instead of distance, start with 20 seconds, 30 seconds, etc. After a while I was able to get to 1 minute and then I vary my speed.
  • Amazing and my god you do not look 50!!! 35 at best! Love the muscles.
  • 5'3" 110-111 pounds 39 yo. I'm pretty active in the gym 4-5 times a week + walking most days as well. I maintain at about 1800-1900.
  • +2 I am 5'3" 110 pounds and I easily eat 2000 calories without gaining an ounce. What I do like to do is cycle my calories, so if I am not working out that day I don't eat as much as the days I lift. Stronglifts is good, as is The New Rules of Lifting, as far as beginner programs go. Be progressive with your approach. Good…
  • I take an Orange Theory class 4-5 times a week (hour long) and walk approximately 20 miles a week on top of that.
  • Maintaining for 12+ years and have always used a weekly calorie allotment rather than a daily one. It works just fine.
  • It is a great workout! I log it as circuit training which is low considering what I burn in the class but close enough.
  • Wow! That's quite a lot of info! Very interesting! Glad you're ok. Blood clots are scary...did try say what they thought might have caused it?
  • Well I did not read all of the responses and you have quite a few LOL. We have to definitely grasp the fact that genetics plays a big part here. So I am 40 this year and I will say that things are definitely different when you approach this age range. That said and here's another tidbit for ya, when I stopped running all…
  • It absolutely would help to start lifting weights ASAP!! It was the only thing that really changed my body. If the thought of maintenance scares you, do it slowly...start with 100 calories weekly (like 100 more per day for 7 days, then try 150 more per day for 7 days, etc.) until you find the sweet spot.
  • I'm 5'4" and 110 pounds. Approximately 18% body fat last time I had it checked. I don't get sizing at all. I'm a 2 in Express jeans, but their XS tops are always way too big. I'm a 2 in American Eagle jeans, but their XS tops are always way too small. I usually wear a medium top there. Basically I fit in anything from a…
  • I absolutely love it. It's a new challenge every single day. I alternate between power walking and running so I don't burn out my legs every day and so I can concentrate more on the weight training aspect. I've been going between 4-5x a week for 18 months straight now! I typically burn between 575-650 per 55 minute class.
  • I've been maintaining for 12 years and 7 of them on this site. :) I've only been within -5/+5 pounds difference. My key is always being active (4-5 hours of exercise per week every week) and logging most things at least 5 days a week. I also cook a lot at home. I might only way 1-2 meals out per week which keeps me in the…
  • Frozen is just as good! Do you have a Trader Joe's? They have frozen cauliflower rice and it is cheap!
  • I love smoothies! Much better than juicing in my opinion. One of my favorites is one I got the idea from Tropical Smoothie. Frozen strawberries, 1/2 a frozen banana, handful of frozen blueberries, big handful of raw kale, a little minced fresh ginger, squeeze of lemon juice, a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder,…
  • I don't like any "diets" that cut entire food groups out or make anything completely off limits. I won't stick to it and I'll be worse off than before. Now I do make some great recipes that are Paleo approved and I do like to limit too many grains and dairy but I will never cut them out forever.
  • I keep up with my usual workouts and I'll eat a little lighter leading up to those days.
  • The PS yogurt is good. The gum is GROSS. I buy the sugar free creamer for my coffee and that keeps my PS cravings at bay for the most part. LOL
