Hell yes. If I have the calories and have already eaten my meals for the day, that's extra room for snacks. Yesterday I was under 1200 calories after I finished dinner (which is super rare for me, to be honest). So I hade two servings of ice cream and a can of cream soda, the latter being something that I haven't had in…

I like A LOT of the things mentioned therein, but my whole heart sang because I *kitten* love The IT Crowd. :)

I was in a similar boat when I started: working a job I hated, utterly broke, with a very young child. The biggest thing for me was to find times I could go for walks, to set realistic goals, and to find ways to cook that were inexpensive. I didn't eat organic or make any huge overhauls to my diet. I learned which…

The highest I ever got was on Halloween, when I cleared 20K -- and even then, I paced a parking lot to get the last 1,500 or so because I really wanted to hit that number. I can't imagine hitting 50K regularly unless one was a really serious runner. I don't know why FitBit shenanigans never occurred to me, though. I'm only…

Yep. Thinking of your weight as an emergency rather than a state of being (especially when you are currently a normal weight, and do not appear to be at all overweight based on your photo) isn't very healthy, and doesn't indicate a very respectful relationship with your body. Like everyone else has said, you could work…

This is an entirely common concern, and you'll have a lot of people tell you that it's going to be personal. It depends on your body, your genetics, how long you were at your highest, weight, and a million other factors. Personally, I was in the 250s to 300s for most of my twenties. I've lost 100 pounds, and I have lots of…

Yes, I use the "Animal fat - bacon grease" for when I cook with the leftover bacon fat. I like to toss my veggies in a tsp of it and it is amazing. :)

You keep saying "easy," but what you're describing -- avoiding anything that has added sugars, never using processed foods, etc -- isn't realistically sustainable for a lot of people due to both financial cost and time cost. Telling a person to eliminate such wide swatches of food is unrealistic, and sets them up for…

Thanks again, everyone! Hopefully the next month will be full of more experimentation. :)

I'm just under 5'3" and started out at 290. :)

Oooooh awesome, thanks! I'll check those out.

No, I read the whole thread and I stand behind the statement I decided to make. You're being confrontational with basically every person who disagrees with you even slightly. I hardly see how you think that's conducive to making any sort of point, unless the point you want to make is that you have very strong feelings…

This is my favorite post. A+

Okay, and that sucks for you. It sounds like your ED was exacerbated by calorie counting, at which point you ought to conclude that MFP is the wrong tool for you. And I'm sorry you went through that -- honestly. I've got mental health issues too, and I would never wish any form of them on anyone. But you're swinging really…

Likewise. I also err on the larger size, if I don't have an exact number. I would have no luck at all if I tried to avoid eating out or getting drinks, because I love both of those things and the fit into my life. The other day my boyfriend brought me two cookies from his co-worker. They were stunning. I just guessed their…

This. It's so beautifully simple and actually sustainable to an enjoyable and "normal" life, whereas most diets and food "rules" taught to me as a child and teen were absurd and impossible to follow. Beyond that, calorie counting is so soothing to my control-triggered anxiety. Rituals help me feel comfortable and safe and…

Oh no, not at all! I tend to make soups and occasional casseroles, but not very frequently.

Sometimes. I have a problem with eating very quickly, and at times where I'm allowing myself the indulgence, I'll find that the feeling I associate with "full" becomes "did I swallow a cannonball?" after about ten minutes or so. But there are times where I want to keep eating and miss the abandon of doing so without having…

I'm weekly, with occasional check-ins when I feel like it. I did daily for the first year or so, and I've debated switching back to use Trendweight. However, I don't want to spend the $100+ for a compatible wi-fi scale. So I'd have to be dedicated to filling my weight in on FitBit every day. I think there are points to be…

Oh man, soup season is the BEST season. Neither of the boys are huge soup fans, though, so I've taken to just getting my soup fix for lunch, lol. Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I'll look around. I've heard brussels sprouts are great when cooked properly, but I've been so trepidatious of them.

Oooh, the oranges in a salad is a good idea! I like to make one with lettuce, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, and apples. I'm not a dressing person either, so the moisture from the apples is pretty nice. I may switch it up with oranges, though.

Losing 100 pounds isn't the hard part -- but as others have said, the timeframe might be. With my social life and other priorities, I spent the better part of three years losing 100 pounds. I tend to take breaks from running a deficit throughout the year because dieting isn't my favorite thing, and we have a few social…

Thanks! I do like the convenience of roasting things, so I'll have to look up for recipes for doing so. :)

This. Owning a food scale is the best thing for really knowing how much you're consuming with the least amount of error. And while what you eat matters in terms of overall health and nutrition, all that matters for weight loss is the almighty calorie. In my experience, it's easier to start off just restricting on what you…

You can click a user's name under their profile picture to pull up their forum history. It's a little weird, lol. If you click their name at the top of that box, it'll take you to their profile page. There's a green "Add as Friend" button. Click that to send the request. :)

Giving up ice cream is hard! I stopped eating it for a while until I had a better handle on portion control. Now I just weigh out a serving a bit at a time. (Basically, that's what I did with a lot of my favorite foods, lol.) Best of luck!

Are you substituting diet foods in your eating? Because I found that what has worked for me is to eat the same types of foods (meats cooked in butter, spaghetti, what-have-you) and simply reduce the amounts. Like, any reduced-fat dairy tastes so bad that you might as well not even bother. Everyone has a different path to…

For months, I've used the Flex's total calories burned for the day minus 500 for my deficit and have found it to work really well. (This sentiment has been echoed by my friend who uses the HR.) It works for me; I do all my food stuff in MFP, and check all of my numbers on the Fitbit app.

Are you consuming more dairy? Because that will do some unpleasant gastrointestinal things to you if you can't process lactose.

I felt like it has been, yes. It gives me a number to work with on calories out, so that I can better calibrate calories in to meet my goals. In my experience (and with my friends as well) it tends accurate enough. It's also a good tool to keep myself moving when is otherwise be more sedentary.
