  • mswinter, my ballet teacher has become a very close friend of mine in real life and she admitted that not catching my scoliosis is a huge regret for her and made her more aware. I keep a close eye on my own students. Scoliosis or not, all dancers find ways to compensate/hide their imbalances! I also have a huge "hourglass"…
  • Ditto on the Levi's Curve ID jeans. I had to try a couple different ones before I found which curve I was but I was relieved to find a brand that understood that I have thighs & a butt despite having a smaller waist.
  • What a transformation, you're like a new person! Good luck getting to your goal!
  • Hmm...I haven't been flirted with. I guess I should count myself lucky, lol. I'm 38, was a single mom until about a year ago. Now have sent the kid to college & am enjoying alone time with the hubby. Put on weight while we were dating since I wasn't used to going to restaurants & bars. Time to take it off! Sent you a…
  • I've done Pilates mat classes for years, but recently started working with a certified trainer on the Pilates Reformer machine. It's completely changed my body. My massage therapist couldn't believe the difference yesterday (I hadn't seen her for a few months). I am so much stronger and my back hurts slightly less. I still…
  • I've always heard that the first place you gained weight can be the last place you lose it from. Maybe you have other victories and this one is just slow to come? It has to happen though, it will! I agree with PP, change your routine, planks, pilates. Pilates has completely changed my body. I hadn't seen abs on me since I…
  • OH. MY. GOD. What is wrong with people??? At least comments like these can help you weed people out of your life. In positive news, a friend of mine asked me the other day if I had any single girl friends to introduce him to. I said, yes I do! He said "are they happy?" I asked if he meant happy being single and he said no,…
  • listen to your body and try not to abuse the hell out of it, or it will pay you back accordingly. I find that if I burn more than 600-700 calories in a day, I get achy and ravenously hungry. 400-500/day is my average happy place. But I'm not trying to lose very much weight.
  • I love Vegan Soul Kitchen, especially the coconut rice recipe in there. Also, never underestimate the power of the internet search :) and Pinterest is a great way to save recipes you find online but are afraid you might forget later.
  • That's a very sad story. I'm glad to hear she trying to recover. It's hard to dish out that kind of tough love.
  • I try to avoid drugs, I don't feel like they help me and the ones that do make me a zombie. But, for bad days I have methocarbomal (muscle relaxer) and tramadol (for pain) and the occasional advil. What works for me: -yoga (though I agree, sometimes it makes my back more angry) -Pilates. It has changed my body. And I have…
  • Hi all, just found this group. I am 38 y.o., diagnosed at age 15. Scoliosis runs in my family - both paternal grandparents, dad, brother, and sister...but thank goodness it skipped my daughter so far. I have an S curve that is about 40 and 45 degrees and they predict it is progressing at 1-2 degrees per year and will…
  • My ex-boyfriend was this way and had me on the same road. It totally was a mental thing with him, and also a control thing. He insisted I eat that same way. I would occasionally sneak off and inhale a grilled cheese, which felt like major rebellion at the time. As a former anorexic, it was not a healthy path for me to be…
  • Ha! I have no idea what sizes mine are. One was purchased & the other 2 were made by friends. I discovered at the festival last weekend, that I want a larger, heavier hoop. It feels good on my back :) I took eyeball measurements of one I tried & liked a lot and am going to investigate at the hardware store this weekend. So…
  • Good for you for listening to that wake up call!!! My mom has heard such scary news from doctors for years and just continued with all her bad habits. It makes me sad to see her ignoring her health like she does. Best of luck on your journey!
  • My husband lost 50 pounds last year, just by starting to exercise (which he hasn't done since college) and cutting out soda. Now, he's back on soda and has gained it all back, it really does add up. It's good of you to support him for awhile on Atkins, it could be worse :)

  • It wasn't a hoop festival, but...Targhee Bluegrass. 3 day music festival at Grand Targhee ski resort. A buddy & I go every year-it's our mini vacation, it's only an hour away.

  • I think it does just take a lot of playing around with it. I do like to mix a lot of off-the-body moves with things like the vortex & halo. I have the knee hooping down, but I'm still working on bumping it back up. I pretty much have to just drop it :( I haven't had a lot of time to practice lately but that's my next goal.…

  • That is a GREAT idea! We don't go to the dog park often, but that inspires me to! My dogs can't run anymore, but they still like to go and bark with all the young dogs.

  • not much lately, but when I go to music festivals, I'll hoop for hours a day. Heading to one on Friday, woot!

  • It is amazing what our kids will inspire in us! Best of luck on your journey, I think you're starting with the very best of intentions.
  • New to the group - hello! I have been hooping for years, so I'm not sure if it has helped me lose weight, but I do log the calories when I hoop and it seems to be working for me. I have 3 homemade hoops of various weights/thicknesses that are homemade. Most of them I've had for awhile & I just order some new, fun tape when…
  • Making extra food at home so you have leftovers is a great way to save money and also control your portions. Look into free workout videos online and at your local library. I don't know how old your kids are, but get them in a stroller or on bikes and walk/jog/run with them. I was a single mom for 17 years and fitness was…
  • I'm 4'10 as well, but I know what you mean about weight having nowhere to hide. Plus, I teach dance and am in front of mirrors for hours a day-so I really can't hide it! I had a hard time buying a car, especially a stick, because if I moved the seat up all the way I would bang my knees when I shifted gears. Argh. Luckily,…
  • I know this is kind of an old thread, but me too! I feel the same way, Cylindad. I can't talk to my friends IRL about losing weight because they think I don't need to lose any. But I see the muffin top creeping on and I don't want it! My original goal was to lose 15 pounds and I've lost 7 so far.
