I took the same approach (trying it on my own first) I thought I could put together a program that was similar. What I found was that if I wanted to do just shakes, I could make that work. It's the variety without the time investment that medifast gives me.

I was seriopusly considering Medifast (and still am) but the cost is a big issue for me... Here's what I've done. I went to the medifast site and read all the nutrition labels for all there products.
