I absolutely patted myself on the back when I made an account. Because it took 2 years to get myself to that point. It was a long process of learning to have a relationship with my fat body, and recognizing that I COULD lose weight and that I WANTED to lose weight was a huge, huge triumph for me. You're asking me what…

OK I am not of the mind that buying a food scale is going to be some magical fix-all for your issues...BUT... Just out of curiosity...why are you anti-food scale? 1. They mean less measuring cups to wash all the damm time. 2. They're really flipping cheap: $15…

Hey there, @SeanNJ - for me and the other poster apparently, just being here (counting my calories at all) WAS a HUGE step that took a lot of work on the way to my 125 lb loss. Clearly, it's not for you. Here's one of my weightloss Don'ts: "Don't think that the way YOU lost weight is the way everyone is going to lose…

My gelato is always *kitten* out by unicorns and served by an actor with a bad wig, isn't yours?

I'm with you, girl ;) He's broken my rule of "don't expect that every one can lose weight the same way that you did" We've got different paths...and for me, when I was morbidly obese, it took me SO MUCH WORK just to get to the point where i recognized the relationship between my body, food, and before I could accept the…

scales are really the only way to go. i got mine for $15, and it should be one of the first things someone counting calories should buy, IMO.

* Don't think being skinny will solve all your problems and make you happy in and of itself. * Don't assume you can or should offer to 'help' others lose weight, especially family. * Don't ever think the way YOU lost weight is the way EVERYONE should lose weight. (But offer your advice generously, when asked.) * Don't take…

My scale is the best! Have you ever tried measuring out something in a cup or tablespoon, then weighed it? Sometimes those even arent the same! It's also just SO much easier for so many things. When I'm making salads, for example, I'll TARE my bowl, then add 4 oz mixed greens, 0.5 oz roasted almonds, 1 oz feta, 2 oz…

As a US girl marrying a nordic man...I will never get used to how much bread y'all eat! My guy can go through half a loaf a day. It astonishes me. Sounds delicious tho. WELL DONE!

:D :D I don't GIVE this advice to people...but I took it and it has worked for me! A couple days of maintenance, and I usually am back on track to losing. I wouldn't call it a "jump start" and I have zero science to back it up, but it's worked for me 3 or 4 times I've hit plateaus. Even if it's unrelated, it's sure nice to…

I agree with all above. Cotton is awful for working out. Have 2 pairs of bike shorts so you can alternate days in them and let one be cleaned & dry while the other is used. Go commando. Shower and dry off completely RIGHT after you exercise. Don't hang out in your bike shorts. Get rid of the gel seat, STAT! Your bum will…

Can't we have a happy medium between learning to eat healthier in ways that make weightloss work for us, which means learning about a variety of approaches? Also - can we get off the ridiculous dairy argument, and get back to OP's question?
-
wait...what? then isn't what you eat at 10 am breakfast, and then 2pm is lunch? That's not intermittent fasting, that's just shifting your eating schedule two hours later, eh?
-
@positivepowers I've never heard of any such research, and I'm a total nerd. Can you point me to this?
-
Oh no, they're not word games! It's just my thing, and I find the difference important. I'm a PhD in science studies, marrying a PhD in Chemistry. It's what I do...science! I explained it to someone else above, if you're interested in learning the difference. Back on topic: I think you've missed my point, but I'm OK with…
-
Actually...they are different! Here, @Carlos_421 let me explain it to you so you'll know :) I can say "e=mc(squared)" and that is not "science." It's a theory that most people would call something close to a scientifically deduced "fact". The science are the methods by which Einstein figured that out. That is the…

When you make it you HAVE to add sugar, but it gets metabolised by the SCOBY. The SCOBY (what some people call the "mushroom") is a Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. Most kombucha you get in the store has gone through two fermentation stages. Both stages you add sugar, and both stages it gets metabolised. In the…

I love the stuff. I had it as a kid in my basement too. It's refreshing...and I make it myself. I see no reason not to.
-
Yes, it works for some people, which I've stated above. That's so great!!! Congrats :) But certainly not for others! Therefore, knowing it is only part of the picture.

I'm sorry to have disturbed you @brianpperkins I understood the thread as also being about "why CICO may not be enough for people," which OP had one opinion on, and I have another. The facticity of CICO (which I believe in) is entirely irrelevant to whether someone will actually be able to change their life habits.

Coming from losing 125 lbs, now working on that last 10...I achieved most of the loss through cardio (running/hiking/biking, etc...a bit of yoga in the beginning but it's been a while.) When I started circuit training and weights about 5 weeks ago, it took 2-3 weeks for me to see slight changes (which my partner pointed…
-
That's no news to me. As I wrote above: "But merely because a person ***knows*** CICO is true doesn't make them magically start losing weight out of nowhere." PS: as a scientist, i'd like to remind you that "science" is not a thing, it's a method and a process. Do you mean to say "feelings don't change scientifically…
-
@Jruzer I love this breakdown! Absolutely. Those old habits may take a lot to break, and new ones may take a lot to make!
-
I think it's an important part of the discussion. Learning about how to feel full was another psychological process for me...and just as important as "knowing" that CICO was true. But if you don't think so, that's just fine!
-
Well I would presume that's pretty obvious that the truth of a fact isn't based on someone's emotional ability to handle it. But merely because a person ***knows*** CICO is true doesn't make them magically start losing weight out of nowhere. The point is, someone can "know" that fact and still be…
-
That's lovely idea and absolutely true in mechanical form, @stevencloser but I think my point went entirely over your head! ONCE SOMEONE IS ABLE to learn how to eat less and have a new relationship to food, CICO will be the underlying mathematical function that helps them lose weight. I know. I lost 125 lbs. But to GET TO…
-
The ability of a person to lose weight doesn't come down to ONLY math. Why? Because we're complex social and psychological beings. Food is part of that complex social and psychological life that we all lead. Therefore, weightloss is a complex psychological as well as physiological process. So tabling the debate of "fat…

@CyberTone you're the awesomest! That's such a cool visual!

I don't understand why cats knocking things over makes you buy disposable water bottles. Just buy refillable ones. Recycling isn't the same as not creating waste in the first place...it still has to go somewhere, be processed, and a large %% ends up back in the trash anyway.

I don't "log" per se...but i'm so used to generally what in things, and how my stomach/body should feel when it's slightly restricted from full calories, that I know when to stop. Eat slowly, eat kid's portions. If it feels like a hassle, don't do it. If it feels nerve-wracking NOT to log, go ahead and do it. There's no…
