He needs to EAT in order to gain weight - some bread and 1 meal a day isn't enough. Has he consulted a dr or nutritionist? They could help him figure out quick easy things to eat that will get him the calories/nutrients he needs. He does sound painfully thin. Good luck and take care :)

At 5'6", according to this site: http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgi you should weigh at the lowest somewhere in the 120's. I think you're gaining weight because your weight is too low for a woman of your height. At 98 lbs, your BMI was 15.8 which is underweight. Even at 108 your BMI is not quite high…

This ^ In my opinion, unless you have been told you need to reduce your sodium intake (or if you have health problems that would make excess sodium contraindicated), I wouldn't worry about eating "too much" sodium now and then. Just my $.02

I would talk to your doctor about all your concerns - tell him how you feel crappy on such a low calorie diet, about your concerns that 800 cals is too low, etc. If he's dismissive or not helpful, I would get a 2nd opinion. Just my $.02

It perturbs me when people say things like "starving yourself wont make you lose weight, you'll just hang on to whatever weight you have", etc - it's like, tell that to Karen Carpenter! Edit: No, I don't think starving oneself is a good way to lose weight. Just clarifying.

I agree. I don't want to deprive myself completely of any foods. Never being allowed a piece of candy or birthday cake or cereal or white bread or a soda, damn, that would be a quick path to suicide for me! YMMV
