I think the problem with Ephedra was that it killed people who had mild cardiac issues that they weren't aware of. Artificially elevating your heart rate is not a good idea.

"Thermogenic" is code for "makes your heart beat faster". Of course that is going to cause you to burn more calories, because your heart is working harder all the time. It also may cause you to die suddenly from heart failure. Or possible cause heart damage that will kill you later, prematurely. If you don't care about…

Cardio does not make you fat. /thread

Wrap cellophane around your waist every day before you go to work. That will tone you right up.

Ah. That's different then, isn't it...

Might want a new doctor but the trend of 7 lbs a year is something to keep an eye on. It might not be a problem now but if that keeps up over the next 10-20 years it certainly would be. Probably just a minor adjustment needed.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/22/science/22angi.html?_r=2&em "Just because we humans can’t hear them doesn’t mean plants don’t howl. Some of the compounds that plants generate in response to insect mastication — their feedback, you might say — are volatile chemicals that serve as cries for help. Such airborne alarm calls…

It is delicious and high in protein. This overrides all other considerations. A question to people who don't eat meat because eating meat is disgusting to you: Why is 99.9% of the meat-substitute market designed to be as close as possible to the taste and texture of real meat? I've never understood why people who think…

Agree with this. I also like raspberries and string cheese as late night snacks, though I know a lot of people think dairy / eating fruit before bed are the devil.

I'm not big on coconut and I really like the Careone chocolate whey stuff, that's all. :p One scoop of that, two cups of milk, and a cup of frozen raspberries and I'm all set.

You can screw up your kidneys drinking too much water but I have no idea what amount you'd need to drink. It would vary based on your size and whether you have any underlying kidney issues.

I know people who use coconut protein powder. I use whey and coconut sounds disgusting, but it's an alternative that I've heard of...

That's not supposed to be the same person, is it? Cuz it's not. Bone structure is different and everything. Your bones don't change shape from weight loss.

I guess I would put 13 1-gallon water jugs in my biggest duffel bag and hope the seams hold....

The key difference there being, you have to ingest food in order to live. It's not like all people have to smoke SOMETHING, and tobacco is the most unhealthy option. You can abstain from smoking - you can't abstain from eating. Each of us has to make the choice of what we put in our bodies for sustenance, dozens and dozens…

Yes it is. :) I'm somewhat disappointed that there isn't an entry in the food database for "Snide (1 peck)". :)

Most people simply don't have the self-control to completely deny themselves all of the unhealthy delicious foods they love. We can hold on for a certain amount of time but the rubber band eventually snaps and a binge results. For people who can abstain, that's great. It's certainly ideal to not eat those unhealthy foods.…

I haven't even been here long and I have found a lot of threads to be repetitive. Here's the fun thing though - I don't have to read them, and I especially don't have to go in and make fun of the OP. Sometimes I feel like taking my turn and telling the person that 600 calories is not enough, etc. Sometimes I don't. It's…

This is a fun and motivational quote and all, but it would cause a lot of muscle and ligament tears if your average MFPer followed it religiously. I think it's important to ease newcomers into hard workouts. When they're 18 months in and 3/4 of the way toward shredded, then you can hit them with that quote. Just sayin'.

Any time you start an exercise program that is considerably more strenuous than you're used to, your body is going to be pissed. Make sure you stretch, get plenty of sleep, and eat plenty of protein, and after a couple weeks you'll find the same workout doesn't feel like hell anymore.

I have perma-scruff. I only shave with a razor for weddings, funerals, and job interviews. Otherwise I give the non-goatee area a once-over with a beard trimmer without the guard on. And even that only happens when my face starts getting sore from sleeping on too much beard. Shaving hurts. Screw it.

WEIGH YOUR PROTEIN POWDER. I cannot stress this enough. I weigh mine every time I mix it and a scoop is never exactly a scoop. Unless you've packed it down completely (and who does that?) you're going to get a different amount of powder every time you mix. When I get a level scoop of protein powder that's supposed to equal…

^^this. I use the CareOne stuff and it's 28g/serving. Regardless, a cheapo digital scale is absolutely essential for MFPers in my humble opinion. You can get them for about 8 bucks on the interwebs.

It sounds like his doctor doesn't give a rat's *kitten* about his wellness. I would advise switching PCPs.

It's better for you to do it without the surgery and you've proven to yourself that you're capable. Plus you'll have less loose skin if you do it the hard way and take a little longer.

I can totally empathize with OP. I was at the post office today and someone licked an envelope. I mean they stuck their tongue out and actually licked it. What the hell's the world coming to?

If you love a certain food to that degree, it's counterproductive to try and deprive yourself of it entirely. You'll be miserable. Just figure out a way you can have one on occasion and work it into your daily intake. One a week, two a week, whatever it takes for you to stay sane and not go on a Dr Pepper binge. Or you…

Some tattoos I've seen (not really on MFP but out and about in real life) are ugly as hell. Just sayin'...

BMI is a crock. Does not adjust for body type, composition, etc. Body fat % is a good indicator of health/progress. edit - I'm a guy that's 6' with broad shoulders, and my gym people told me I had about 175 lbs of lean mass. I'm not all that muscular, but I'd say your 209 number sounds a bit high. In any case, you're…

We thought the exact same thing, that it's not necessary and that it's tacky. Then at our wedding, we were halfway through making the rounds after dinner and people from my wife's side that we hadn't gotten to yet were getting up and leaving. Your grandfather might not want to dance to "Rumpshaker" with you and your…
