How are you defining complete fasting? People do IF in a variety of ways, including periods of complete fasting lasting for at least a day. It doesn't matter anyway. I suggested that the OP search the literature for her own information, not just for one paper that restricts itself to fasting for Ramadan.

There is support in the medical literature for the idea that fasting can have beneficial effects on autoimmune diseases. That doesn't mean it's a cure, only that it might be a tool for managing your condition. You should read up on your specific condition in peer reviewed literature. Here's one, general example, not…

I go through phases. Sometimes all I want to do is drink a cup of heavy whipping cream, and not bother with any other food. Right now, I love eating my cauliflower fried rice that is a huge serving of cauliflower, carrots, green onion, broccoli slaw, and peas. Having a steak usually resets my appetite for veggies.

"Temporarily" is the operative word!

Salt doesn't seem to make me puffy, and I have the blood pressure of a toddler, so I salt to taste. Maybe someone has research that shows reasons to limit salt other than blood pressure, and if so, I'd be happy to see a link.

My doctor recommended a low carb, low sugar diet too, and it isn't terribly hard to do. Sticking to a low carb high fat plan has been excellent for my cholesterol levels, and for joint inflammation that I was having. You need not starve. However you do need to be more specific than just saying "no carb."

There's no need to lump them all together. GMO is the commonly recognized term for crops that have been genetically modified through molecular biology techniques. If you want to refer to the genetic modifications made by selective breeding, you can call it selective breeding, or conventional breeding. Then you can have…

Overall strength training should help!

It's safest to assume that you can't change your husband's mind, and act accordingly. Can you afford a gym membership? Is so, does he make all the financial decisions, or can you make one that is a benefit for you? If not, can you walk as a low impact exercise, or find other alternatives? I am very sorry that you're in…

Carbs never actually make me feel unwell. I'm making Chinese style barbequed chicken sticky rice, tomorrow. It's super delicious, not especially fattening, and I'll probably go over my carbs, but probably not way over.

It's easy not to eat GMOs if you don't want to. I don't eat alfalfa, canola oil, foods containing corn syrup, cottonseed oil, or sugar, but I will happily eat papayas, non-organic-certified soy, and squashes. These are the crops that are likely to be GM in the U.S. Alfalfa Canola Corn (the corn syrup kind, not sweet corn…

That's why the EPA is involved in the approval process. Generally speaking, the plants grown in agriculture need a lot of special treatment, and aren't that likely to thrive on their own. Except blackberries, which are not GMO, which grow all over where I live. You'd have to look at each plant individually. There's a…

We shouldn't give up the point about foods that are genetically modified by conventional means, like mutation breeding, which uses chemicals or radiation to induce changes in a target crop; selective breeding, which could produce a product that is toxic; and hybridization, which can <gasp> combine different species in one…

Sucralose isn't a sugar alcohol. It sounds like you're better off without it. I can't use erythritol, because it irritates my bladder, which makes me sad, because I can make fabulous desserts with it.

Everyone has their medications that don't work for them. I get crazy and depressed on estrogen alone, and my ability to hold a train of thought goes to hell. The wrong progestin makes me hairy and suicidal. Thankfully, there are many different progestins, so if the one you're taking is giving you side effects, you might be…

Eating healthy balanced meals helped me a lot. Fill up on protein and fiber. If you have room in your plan for a square of chocolate, at about 70 calories, it makes a good dessert once a day.

@KnitOrMiss , yes, spironolactone is a potassium sparing diuretic that works by inhibiting aldosterone, which is made by the adrenal cortex and structurally related to androgenic hormones - it can be dehydrating. The first BCP I was on made me grow little dark hairs where I didn't want them. You might look at the progestin…

If we're talking about personal experience, eating carbohydrates and sugar becomes a non-ending cycle for me. If I hit my protein and fiber macros and eat moderate amounts of fat, I forget to snack, and by the end of the day often don't want dinner.

Everyone makes androgens, aka male hormones, and cells respond to them if they have the corresponding receptors to bind the hormone. So if you, as a woman, have androgen receptors associated with hair follicles, you will tend to grow some dark hairs in places like the face, even though your hormones can be perfectly…

You probably have androgen receptors in your skin which is not a medical condition. You can get that hair permanently removed if you wish. I agree with KnitOrMiss about your thyroid. Did they test T4, as well as TSH?

This is what flip flops are for. I only wear them for public showers.

Good job @koochhill ! Your weight loss success is a reason for optimism. Losing any extra weight usually helps cholesterol.

Uh, no.

I had an anthropology professor who studied primate diet, and the discussion of fat and protein in human diet was fascinating. Made me want to get out there and eat some marrow bones.

I like protein powder pancakes, and I like them plain, with butter, or with almond butter.

Not in recovery, but clean, sober, and stopped drinking alcohol completely, recently, for health reasons. It's kind of weird how many social things revolve around alcohol.

I know. He loses 20 pounds without trying, and I've lost 2. Then when I tell him it's the low carb meals, which I've mentioned about 20 times, he acts like he's never heard of such a thing. He thinks it's because he goes to the gym, which he does, but has been doing for years. But as long as it's working I'm happy because…

I crave it everyday. Fortunately one square is usually enough, and it's dark chocolate, which has nutritional benefits.

Of course.

Mine doesn't know he's eating low carb. He's excited about all the meat and veggies. I've noticed that he doesn't snack anymore.
