I have a Fitbit Force and it does the same thing when pushing shopping carts. To fix this I put the setting on "Non-dominant hand" and put it in my pocket. I tested this against my old Fitbit Zip and over the course of 90 min it was less than 1% off.

I drink a few diet sodas a day as well as using artificial sweetener in my daily coffee. There is no way I am wasting my daily calories on regular soda when I can drink diet and have more calories for food. To be fair I also drink about a gallon of water a day as well to make sure I stay hydrated.
