I do know of someone who is not on MFP, but does the 5:2 plan BUT not 2 low cal days in a row, say do Monday and Thursday, etc. Has worked for her.

Try Lesley Sansome's exercises on youtube, they are a good workout, also jason'skitchen 10 minute workout on youtube is great too. I can't afford a gym membership either, my main exercise is walking. I eat probably around 1500 sometimes more, sometimes less. I am in my 60's but I have found that I NEED to exercise each day, when I was younger, just cutting calories worked but not now. I need to move!!!!!!!!!
