I'm lucky to lift in a womens' college gym, but this is a great post.

Can you split-squat with dumbbells? I went through a year-long injury without being able to squat with weight, but split-squats were ok. Another option is negative squats, or wall-squats with a fitness ball. My real advice though, would be to see a Dr.

I don't love it, it makes me feel like my body is public property. I know most people are paying me a compliment, but I'd prefer they just said I looked healthy.

Hi there! I'm in my 5th year of grad school and if you have any questions, let me know! I'll totally add you.

As everyone said, protein shakes definitely won't make you bulky. Women simply can NOT get bulky without adding in certain hormones or steroids. I use whey protein to supplement and reach my protein macros. I prefer Optimum Nutrition or Dymatize Elite Gourmet. I mix them with unsweetened almond milk. They make a big…

You can totally add me! I'm a grad student and I run. I'm not vegan but I do try and eat little meat!

I think this is a case of body type and genetics. My ribs have always been visible, even when I was very overweight. Now that I'm normal, they're prominent.

I'm down 21 lbs with only 31 to lose total and people are only commenting now. Many didn't want to say anything because they thought I might not be losing on purpose or it might be stress or something else unpleasant. I'm small and even 10 lbs loss was noticeable on me but most people avoided saying something out of…

Sleep:6-8 hrs a day. 8-10 would be ideal. I need A LOT of sleep. Work: 6-8 hrs a day, including weekends. I work anywhere from 25-60 hrs a week as a grad student. This week I've clocked bout 60. Exercise: 1-2 hrs a day My work is researching and writing so, sedentary

Motivates, especially if I've had slip ups recently. For example I had a bingey weekend and still managed to lose half a pound this week. It lets me know that it's ok to be compassionate with myself when I deviate from my plan and that the world will not end if I eat lasanga and tomato pie back to back.

When I graduated high school, I was 172 lbs at 5'4. I didn't think anything of it at the time. However, my living environment changed and since I was no longer living with my single mother (who could not cook, and did the best she could which was fast food), I taught myself to cook and began taking walks because I was…

Honestly, vinegar or even a small (I MEAN SMALL) amount of original blue formula Dawn dish detergent. When I worked in restaurants and just stank like grease, a combo of those worked great.

Learn to cook and how to shop sales/generics. I'm in grad school and feed myself on 20-30 bucks a week.
-
I'll try to eat a little lighter or sneak in an extra lap on my trail run, but I do not punish myself for it.
-
I haven't eliminated anything and have lost 15 lbs so far. I am considering eliminating alcohol, but mostly just because it makes me feel terrible these days.
-
I do, but I tend to retain weight for the week before and the week of regardless.

5'4, 135 lbs. It's been a while since I measured but here goes: Chest - 36" Waist - 28" Hips - 38" I have a slightly bottom-heavy hourglass shape. No matter my weight my hips have always been consistently 10 inches larger around than my waist, lol

My reasons are completely shallow. I've been healthy my entire life. Now I want to look good naked.

I won't hate on you, whatever gets you healthy and out of a depressive episode is great. There's no one road to health and success. But for people whose depression is closely linked to abuse and trauma, a focus on self-worth isn't selfish at all. It's a radical act of resistance and survival.

Been reading over this thread and I feel for all of you going through this. I am not one of those people who can just "identify the cause and move on." Trauma at various stages in my life has made that neurologically and hormonally impossible. So I thought I might make a short list of things that have helped me anyway. I'm…

Yes, I have PTSD that manifests as extreme levels of anxiety, depression, and flashbacks. I've been off and on meds for years depending on my state of mind and what's going on in my life. I'm off them for now. What helps me is journaling and making self-care a priority. I don't mean just working out but also paying…

I haven't noticed any relationship between my occupation and my exercise/diet. At my slimmest, I was a waitress at a pizza place and I ate at work. Pizza, garlic knots, calorie-laden soups, etc. And what I ate at home was mostly bread, bagels, rice, etc. Not to mention I was 19-21 so I regularly boozed it up. What made the…

I do New Rules of Lifting, but the book and routines for men rather than women. I've read both books but found the workouts in the men's book easier to follow. I recommend the women's book if you're new to lifting though, because the authors do a very good job of breaking down popular myths surrounding women's fitness. Me…

Thanks a lot for the responses, both of you! I'm definitely going to up my cals, probably to the numbers you posted, riouxt. I actually kick-started my weight loss by (unintentionally) eating my approx. my TDEE and hiking 5-6 miles a day while doing research in central Turkey. It's been on a roll since and I don't want it…

I started my weight loss journey a month ago at 151 and today I am happily 139. What did it for me was walking with intervals of jogging or running 3 miles 4-5 x a week and 2-3x a week of heavy weight lifting. I also do my very best to stick to my cals and eat back most of my exercise cals.

I'm 5'4 and started at 151. I weigh 139 now on my way to 120 and people have been noticing. So yes!
