Having a planned routine can help you achieve your 500 mile/month goal. Biking to destinations you usually drive to can add miles to your "bike-log". I used my bike to travel to work, run errands, visit relatives, meet my husband at the local "watering hole", (Then, I hang the bike on our car's bike rack and become the…

Peri menopause started when I was 40. Lots of night sweats. That's when I started eating a serving of soy everyday. My periods, which were never regular became predictable because of the plant estrogen in the soy. I believe it made me less aggressive. I did not end my menses until I was 57-1/2. I also found that if I ate…

Red-winged black birds when biking through swampy areas (where they nest.) Glad to have been wearing a helmet. Dogs, which chase moving things. I yell at them VERY LOUDLY, sometimes using unlady-like language. It often gets the attention of the owners. For the dogs' safety, they don't belong on the road. Bee in the helmet…

I have a little "bikey bag" attached under my saddle. In it, I keep the multi-hex wrench tool, my cell-phone, electrical tape, money ($5-$10), and chap stick. My bike frame has 2 cages for water bottles. I use one bottle to hold my flat kit, which consists of: a spare tube, the c02 kit, 2 cylinders, a flat changing tool,…

Amazing. I would a hard time doing it at 100% . He's truly hero-material. Thanks for sharing.

I've found a couple of wallets that I turned into the local police station. I also found a 5 gallon water container (the type campers use). It was an interesting experience trying to carry that home. I have done a little rummage sale shopping while biking. It severely limits what a person can buy. When biking to work, I…

My favorite long distance snacks are dried fruit, and nuts. I will also indulge in a cappuccino if I stop at a gas station to use the bathroom and take a break. What's a better source of energy than caffeine and sugar? For an energy snack on the move, the Goo and Gel snacks work. Do make sure you drink enough water.…

Nice. Fantastic color. It looks fast. I bet it's sweet ride. I have a"classic" Trek, probably from back in the early 90's. It's a 2300, one of the first composites. The forks are aluminum the rest is carbon fiber. It was produced back in the day when they didn't make the clip-in pedal attachments, but had these enormous…

Great advice. I am also an "oldbikegirl" in that I am 60. I will use the advice posted when I get back to biking. I am still recovering from major back surgery and will be throughout the entire year of 2015. I know the surgery and lack of time on the bike has taken some of my former energy and endurance. I previously used…

I started peri-menopausal symptoms when I was 40. I was getting regular bouts of night sweats, retained fluid, and was noticeably moodier. (I had a bedroom ceiling fan installed and started eating 3 oz. of tofu daily to help alleviate these.) I didn't accomplish full menopause (ceased periods completely) until I was 57-1/2…

Nice pics. My favorite is the "Giant" in Perth. I have 2 Giants myself. Love those bikes.

Hello Wild person. I can identify with your pain, surgery, and rejoice in your recovery. I had major back surgery in February. (Replaced 3 discs, fused 4 vertebrae, and a laminectomy in my lower spine.) I am in the process of healing. I walk several times a day (inside and outside) and have been given the ok to use an…

The 1400 calorie per day diet will be great for you. That amount will be a bit short of what your guy needs. Make the same healthy food, but give him 25-30% more. He'll need closer to 1800 calories per day. Our guys don't appreciate feeling like they're deprived or starving. I tell my husband I want him healthy and with me…

I am rehabbing from extensive back surgery. As much as I would love to participate in this challenge (I love a GOOD challenge....) I am physically unable. I will appoint myself the "official cheerleader" to those of you fellow Wisconsinites who are in it. GO , PEOPLE, GO!!!! As soon as I am deemed able, I plan to…

I have been eating a serving of tofu daily since I was in my early 40's and started to get night sweats. The natural plant estrogen in soy helped alleviate the night sweats and my periods became regular. They had been very unpredictable up until then. It also helped relieve my PMS symptoms. This is what soy did for me.…

I had my best transition time when I wore my running shoes for the whole event.

I like to try to keep my eating plan relatively simple. I usually follow Dr. Gott's "No sugar / No flour" guidelines. What's left is protein, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. The "allowed" carbs are foods like oatmeal, corn, and rice, which are not processed. Reading the ingredients labels is important. The fewer the…

I've been an avid bicyclist. About 2 years ago I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. As we age, we all are subject to it. Mine decided to get nasty on me. I will be having a lower lumbar spinal fusion next week. The last few months have been so frustrating. I am use to being strong, independent, and capable.…

Hi, I am pretty much in that same place. I usually eat healthy during the week but relax my discipline on the weekends. That's a fine plan to maintain current weight, but if I (or you) want to lose weight, a person has to be careful on the weekends. Try to log in some "good" weekends. I also found that if the scale is not…

I have been eating one serving of soy products daily since I was 40. I am 57 now. I have not experienced any "real" hot flashes. I also exercise regularly and I truly believe between the exercise and soy I have kept the "flashing" at bay. I also find that if I don't indulge in too many processed carbs, I stay "cooler". My…

Title Nine also carry a variety of decent sport bras for all sized women. Yeah, I've worn 2 on many occasions. Better that than bouncing around. That hurts way too much. (Could put my own eye out.....)

I started to get night sweats when I turned 40. I had read in a women's health magazine that soy, which contains natural plant estrogen, could be beneficial in reducing menopausal symptoms so I began eating one serving of any soy product per day. Yes, I do believe it hepled me. I do not experience night sweats now unless I…

I like coffee. There have been a lot of studies on its benefits and detriments. The benefits are winning. In my opinion, "You can't be too rich, too thin, or drink too much coffee." Oh, and if it does not have caffeine, it doesn't pay to drink it.

I think you are making a wise and reasonable choice in upping your daily calories to 1500 per day espescially if you are exercising. I found that if I eat less than 1400 calories a day, my metabolism slows down and I don't lose any weight.
