Drink if you're thirsty or your urine is dark yellow, otherwise you'll be OK. It doesn't have to be pure water either - any drink except alcoholic ones will do the trick.

I also highly recommend the BBC programme as it gives background to the 5:2 diet as well as Alternative day fasting, mainly with an emphasis of improving health and lifespan, but with the added benefit of significant weight loss.

^^this. If you are having to force yourself to drink water then you probably don't need it. Unless your urine is a dark yellow you are probably OK. Additionally, your body absorbs water from food that you ingest.
