  • Our gym has a/c and it still gets hot. Reebok yoga shorts rock- stretch well, wash great, won't show thru on squats, and bonus round my hubby likes the way they look! Top is a T shirt w/sleeves cut off. Tried tanks but the bar hurts on my shoulders, and ladies' tanks don't have enough room in the armhole for me. I've grown…
  • When's the last time you had your thyroid levels checked?

  • OK, I'll play: Rate the mental health benefits 0= not important 1=important 2= very important • Stress relief -1 • Anger management -3 (yup) • Increased energy/ motivation -0 • Happiness (the exercise high) -0 Rate the physical benefits 0= not important 1= important 2=very important • Better looks/body -1 • Lose weight -1…
  • What does she like to do? I hate running, and would only do it if pursued by rabid wolves. Maybe not even then... However, I adore riding bikes, lifting weights, and horseback riding. Have her choose something she really likes, then go for it. Mallwalking? and second to the water exercises- the water support will make her…
  • My husband was trying to help me with my form on OHPs and came up with a great solution. We work in a squat rack, so he put the supports up much higher than my normal starting point (e.g. chest height)-- at about the level of my forehead- then had me lift the bar from there to the lockout position. That way I was doing…
  • It's interesting to see how different everyone is! I can't eat anything before the morning workout or I feel like hurling half way thru... we usually go to the gym in the mornings due to our work schedules. If we go to the gym after work, I don't do nearly as well as in the morning. Disclaimer: I've never been able to eat…
  • lifting straps- was using the mixed grip but at 185 I started having trouble. The arthritis is bad enough that I didn't want to aggravate it with extra exercises, so straps were the perfect answer. Mine are hot pink! :)

  • Threadjack: total NSV today made me smile! I was eating lunch and listening idly to the 2 young men chatting at the next table over. Heard the word "deadlift" go by- one says to the other, "165-175 is a really good deadlift man!". These two were buff guys in their mid 20's. I deadlift 220 routinely (PR 235#) and am a woman…

  • Easy to eat breakfast sandwich- toast whole grain bread (or not) add a good smear of peanut butter (or any nut butter) and sprinkle on dried fruit of your choice. I like raisins or dried cherries. And if you don't eat bacon, I'm all for it- more for me!!! :)
  • chalk online: but I like lifting straps. No mess, and quick break-in time. Plus hot pink straps rock when you pull 225 off the floor!
  • Award winning BBQ pork ribs, asparagus seasoned with a home made herb salt, olives stuffed with garlic, a sip of Cazuls reposado tequila, and a chocolate pecan turtle for dessert. Yummy! (lifted heavy today, tons of calories....)
  • I'm married to a top tier competitive BBQer: word of advice, DON'T smoke lamb. It's nasty, and I *love* lamb. Best bet is to stuff the fell with tons of garlic, brush on the butter and grill gently till just a touch past rare, and enjoy. Rosemary and the other typical mediterranean spices also work very well with lamb. Low…
  • kathy- Yes, sometimes this ^__^. Especially if I'm w/o my husband. Just lean on the bar, smile, and hoist more than they can. Usually shuts them up!
  • OK tried the Keds tonite. Just flat bottomed old pair of slip on sneakers I found under the bed. They worked brilliantly! I think I'll jump on the "chucks" bandwagon now.
  • Stronglifts 5x5 NSV: lifting the old flower pots full of wet dirt off the deck today to empty them out- with NO trouble. Some of those things were at least 50#. :)
  • You're allowed to go barefoot in your gyms? I don't think we are..... Anyone tried Keds slip ons? I just found an old pair of mine shoved under the bed, and may give them a whirl Monday.
  • *blush* thanks!! Too embarrassed to show off anythn' else.
  • Springfield- You are raising a really smart son there! He's gonna make a great BF/hubby for some lucky girl some day. How diplomatic of him...:)
  • Asics for walking and daily wear (LOVE them) and cheap pair of lifting shoes with utterly flat soles for workouts. They really DO make a difference at the higher weights. About the time I started sqatting 185, I noticed the "rock" that the Asics gave really upset the balance of the bar. Next purchase: Converse or Puma flat…
  • Welcome to the rack! I'm 52 and been doing this for a year.
  • Been menopausal for some time now, can't say that is what caused the weight gain. Eating out frequently and sitting on my butt is the cause. Best bet: log all you eat, eat healthy and fresh, and go lift heavy weights. Get a copy of Rippetoe's Starting Strength, read it, then go elbow the kids aside and lift! It builds…
  • Read the first post in this: TOPIC: I am the woman in the freeweights section of the gym And you'll get it. Totally worth the time invested- get StrongLifts 5x5, and the Rippetoe book "starting strength" and go to town!
  • Second the Strong lifts 3x a week. It's all I do; lost 18# and many many inches in a year. I have *no* free time, work 70-80hr weeks as a medical professional, so 1 hr 3x a week is all I can spare. Just do it, you'll love it (especially when you realize you're picking up more than the guys.... )

  • Got a Fitbit Flex for Christmas- it's ok as a pedometer, but if what you do does not involve walking or running it's very inaccurate. I lift heavy weights 3x a wk, and it barely records that. If I go out and take a long, brisk walk it's really excited! In Pilates it's actually recorded me as "sleeping" a couple times.…
  • Jose Ole wraps low carb are great. My favorite combo is wrap, 2-3 Tbsp of garlic hummus, several slices of smoked turkey deli meat (about 3 oz), cracked black pepper, and a tiny sprinkle of real bacon bits. Not too many calories, tasty, and keeps me full all afternoon at work.

  • What Barbonica said.... I"m the same age as her and found out heavy lifting works great. 3 days a week in the gym lifting, for about an hour each time. Get the Starting Strength book to read for "how to", and load the StrongLifts 5x5 app onto your phone. Take phone to gym, and let it do all the tracking for you! Easy as…
  • My husband got me started. I've been doing this for a year- it's the most compact complete workout time-wise you will ever do. Cardio after? Nah, it will get your heart moving just fine once you get into the higher weights. Just do it! I'm the "old lady" in the squat rack- those kids don't intimidate me! After a year, you…
