  • So I started at a new gym about a month ago, and the newer equipment has been seriously nice. Boring, though. Other than the he-man who grunts with *every* repetition (really- aren't you gonna get a hernia from all that???), it was dull. Then there was last Wednesday: tall younger man (late 20's, early 30's) with slender…
  • We do it for those "rawr!" moments. You will have them!!
  • I found the same problem, so I just play with my warm ups till I get a comfortable mean. For example, with deadlift, I'll do bare bar x5; 95# x5; 135 x5; 185 x3, then work weight. My OHPs suck, so it's just 5x bare bar to get the motion set, then my weenie weight of 65#. Squats are kinda between; I'll do 2-3 warmup sets…
  • Those abs are going to be eaten by the Godzilla beer guts in a decade. Admire them now for the endangered species that they are......
  • Way to go Sumiblue and Psych!
  • I've deloaded a bunch- various reasons. Most recently was a total stall at 70# on the OHP. For that one I'm deloading and doing 5x as many as I can. Once I hit 5 x 10 or somewhere close, I'll add fractionals. Damn OHPs...... :p

  • I can't post pics, since I'm a tech ignoramus, but I'm 53 yr old and started lifting 2 yrs ago. Can now deadlift 235# on a good day, and am creeping up on the 100# bench. I am close to squatting full body weight- if not for a torn hamstring, I'd have it by now. Don't ask about OHPs, we don't speak of them....
  • glucosamine and chondroitin supplements. The crunching is your cartilage degenerating.
  • So there was this guy in the gym last Wednesday, late 30-ish, think Mr Clean but mediterranean coloring. In real good condition, clearly no stranger to the weights. I'm in the cage doing squats, and between sets I turned around and he was in front of the mirror wall with both hand clasped in front of his right hip,…
  • straps. Cheap, useful, and they come in hot pink.
  • Interesting read. I'm like Crabada, so always a mixed grip. The really light warm up weights I do overhanded, but starting around the 100#+ mark, I use mixed grip. I can bare hand the bar up to about 185#, then I have to use the straps- my highest pull so far is 225#. Been working back up to that for a couple months…
  • I want to see a share of the Rogan-wannabe doing the baby bird face.
  • "and now his hand is in his pocket doing it in there. At that point I couldn't even. " Maybe he has crabs????
  • Canadianlbs; your gym is WAY more entertaining than mine! Of course to discourage the , um, unwanted affection behaviors you could always grab the spray bottle of cleaner for the equipment, and start vigorously cleaning the yoga platform next to them while muttering "eww, gross" just loud enough to hear.... As an aside: I…
  • I forgot the basic laws of physics last nite. By myself in the gym, squat rack in use. Needed to do Pendlay rows to finish my workout. I took the bench bar (not my fave, too small a diameter and the knurls hurt) and put it on the curl bench pegs. Was chatting with another gym rat about the superbowl, and proceeded to load…
  • So this happened a week ago, but still qualifies. Older fellow (not that I should say anything) over by the hand weights. Shorts, T shirt, terry headband, balding and slightly portly. The whole wall behind the wt rack is a mirror. He's facing the mirror and picks up a couple of the 20# weights, and proceeds to do "curls"…
  • Dry shaving pubes in the locker room wins. Hands down. I can't even compute.......
  • Probably embarrassed that you were OHP'g more than he could curl in front of his girl. Snork.
  • " in other words, 'cat . . . watermelon . . . lake; why are you talking to me?' " There's your problem!! You're thinking friendly things. Try skunk, hemerrhoids, toxic waste..... I generally use images of all my clients that irritate the living **** out of me. Apparently if I think of this my face reflects it.

  • I'm going to Crabada's gym! No hotties at ours. Pimples, check. Wrinkles, check (OK, a few of the latter are ours).
  • Heehee. I'm not sure what she was trying to accomplish but she did use the unfreighted sled for some half-hearted leg work after I got done cleaning it up. In the same vein, we were in the gym late this Monday- like around 5 pm, so it was getting crowded. We were in the cage and doing bench presses (the bench was occupied,…
  • Back to our original topic... So there was this guy in the gym today, while we were in the rack. He's Mr Studly, all plugged into his tunes and wearing enough cologne that if he ever escaped from max security the dogs would catch him before he'd gone 10 feet. (In other words, he reeked) He's on the Smith machine doing…
  • Some woman at our gym wanted to use the sled. It was freighted with 45's- like 5 on each side. She sidled over to the cage, batted her eyes at my husband, and asked if he would help her remove the 45's b/c she couldn't move them. This is an effective strategy you could try -- altho not in her case, b/c he was going into…
  • "Then he'd flip over, put one of the rollers on his back and do hip thrusts while rolling out if back. Air humping. " Did it ever occur to you that this was his way of trying to pick up women? (or men)
  • I was squatting over 200# and patting myself on the back when... husband finally convinced me by videoing my form. Let's just say it was horrible. We used the side safety bars as a reference point, and I went down to about 75# and worked my form till it was right. Watched lots of videos on "how to" and learned to feel my…
  • Sure, I'd love some company. We're in the VA burbs, so it's usually just the geriatric set chatting on the stationary bikes when we go over. :)) Using the cage is normally easy.
  • I'm not nearly as good a story teller as the rest of y'all, but: there was this guy in the gym tonight.... not sure if he's a regular, 'cuz I went later than usual and there's also a bunch of home-from-college kids lurking round. Anyhow, 20-something walks into the weight corner in shorts and a T shirt, popping his chest…
  • Try this: http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/Press_Videos Lots of good stuff here. I found the one where he specifically worked with a woman most helpful. Everytime I go to OHP, I think about his comment to "push your chest up and out" (not that there's much there, but still). It made a huge difference to me. Also,…
