  • Some great stories in here, starting with the OP. It's amazing how easy it is to end up in such a situation, where it takes a great shock to realize where you've been slowly drifting for some time. Myself, I have been down this weight loss & fitness road before, but this time the alarm bell couldn't have been clearer. I…
  • I'm for accepting the PEOPLE who are fat and being able to look past it at who they are... it's the FAT that I can't regard as acceptable, not with a national health crisis arising from it. We do have a dual problem in the US, on the one hand we are becoming too materialistic, shallow, superficial... but on the other hand…
  • Oddly enough? My fat clothes. No better confirmation of my continuing success than occasionally slipping into some of that old over-sized clothing of mine.
  • Does it have to be just one? Yeah, most important is that I want to feel good (don't feel good when I lean over and can feel the flab there), and obviously I want to look good for the opposite sex, but honestly if I had to sum it up I just want to enjoy being an athletic young guy while I can. I won't be able to jump…
  • Some people are just afraid of change. I grew out a beard a year ago, trimmed and well-kept mind you, and got similar reactions. Some people are jealous. Some people, especially in the US, simply don't know what an objectively healthy weight or fitness level is. We're increasingly grading on a curve, so to speak.
  • Basketball, soccer, and tennis are all great ways. You're constantly moving, your mind is focused on the game aspect, you're having to coordinate with teammates, your competitive spirit takes over... of course they all involve getting a group together. Often times I'll just shoot around a basketball by myself... if you…
  • It's funny you say "hit the pavement" as that's the only part of running outside I hate. I much prefer the nice "give" of an outdoor track... but I'd still take the pavement over an indoor treadmill or track.
  • I don't trust the air circulation in gyms. Plus, I'm a Luddite and don't like using machines if I don't have to. Anything I can do outdoors, I will.
  • I'm 5'10" and liked being at 165 the best. That was a body fat % of about 15-16, and I could fit comfortably in size 34 pants and medium t-shirts. I was thin, not skinny, and healthy. Most importantly, felt great. I'm actually trying to get back to that weight, having slowly climbed back to almost 200, and then I'm going…
  • Honestly, that's probably the best, most realistic fitness plan for the vast majority of people. With patience, the results are amazing... you're proof of that!
  • Just about all of my weight (at least when I'm under 200 pounds) accumulates as belly flab and love handles, so it's both the first and the last to come off. Not much anywhere else. It's both good and bad... bad in the sense that I have to be really fit, not just a decent weight, to get rid of my gut... but good in the…
  • I prefer sugar, because it forces me to confront my dietary habits. However, if I'm at a barbecue or get-together, I'll stick to the Coke Zero. That's probably my most regular "cheat"... and I don't even get to enjoy calories out of it!
  • I can imagine how that feels, I'm doing a lot of exercising right now with a close relative and good friend, but he's starting from a heavier weight (we're the same age and height). He has every bit the athleticism I do, but he's carrying around more of that physical burden right now... so I try not to talk in weight loss…
  • We're extremely delicate beings when you think about it. Slight changes in temperature, slight disruptions to our sleep cycles... just about any minor tweak will cause a ripple effect in our lives, starting with our moods. Biologically, we're not meant to carry a great deal of weight, or to process the products we eat…
  • Assuming you're eating well but still burning slightly more calories than you're taking in, then eventually you'll see those results. And by see I really mean just that, sometimes the scale doesn't cooperate, but honestly that doesn't matter... having your clothes get looser is the #1 best way to know you're making…
  • Everybody is different... I for one have difficulty with certain joints even when I'm at my ideal weight. Granted I could have been more fit, but at the end of the day all people are built differently and the best thing you can do is listen to your body. You could also look at other variables, like where you jog (use…
  • A higher percentage of the calories you burn from walking will contribute to fat loss than the percentage from running. However, running burns a lot more total calories in the same amount of time, so you get more total fat-busting from running. If you have the time and/or joint problems, though, I recommend walking. Go at…
