This^^^^ Its extremely important and will likely save you money as you will get into the right shoe the first time.

My daughter and son-in-law completed the couch to 5K program and told me that they were inspired to do it because of me! I was stunned. At a Walgreens the attractive cashier asked if I wanted to buy a candy bar to benefit some cause. I said, "I really try to avoid sugar" and she said; "That's why you're so georgous" I was…

Let's say you are eating the correct amount of calories per day, then here are my thoughts: Prevention is the key. Current situation cure; an apple. When you are 'starving' it does not seem too appealing but 15 minutes after you eat it you will feel fine. For me this usually happens when I ate simple carbs (breads, pasta,…

warm up; 2 mile run; cool down 70 pushups 20 pullups

As long as you are close in line for a liver transplant- go for it.

Rest and recovery days; If you don't feel that you need them- then- you are probably not training enough. Rest and recovery day does not have to be totally inactive. On a non running day, for example, you can practice "active recovery" by taking a long walk. Also that day can be a cross training day; ex; upper body…

Diet helps you to lose weight. Exercise assists that process but mainly prevents you from looking like and feeling like you just came out of a multi-year coma once you get to your target weight.

One thing that I have not seen mentioned so far is having a proper warm up. It is often neglected by your average runner but you never see an olympic athlete, for example compete before warming up. It may seem silly to do as you begin the C25K program but, more than any stretching, it will help your calves before, during…

I like your approach to doing the proper research. This will help you to see principles from this diet that you will agree with and as well as the ones that you may not agree with. Then, you can make informed decisions. Unfortunately, a forum like this is one of the absolute worst places to go to reach a conclusion but is…

Suppliment with a good brand of fish oil tablets. This helps reduce swelling. Have some protein (a quickly digestible type is better- I like hemp protein powder) right after your workout (within at least an hour). This is a strategic time to provide your muscles the nutrients they need to repair themselves and will reduce…

So I joined the headlamp bandwagon. My 4 miler last night sure needed it as it was a new path and there were several dark spots where I would have been running blind. Sometimes its not just being seen but being able to see yourself. I know its dorky but who cares? At least I arrived home without biting the pavement.

If you are at 17 miles a week now I think that you are on the verge of pushing it. That is only because you pretty much have just enough time to properly train for it. So, yes you can do it, barely. ETA; I'm assuming that right now a 5 mile run is easy for you. Follow a careful program that increases your distance…

After reading this thread I think I'm going to get a headlamp too. I get a bit worried when I'm on a bike lane or crossing a road that some texter will not see me or I forget a crack in the sidewalk or don't see an obstacle in my path. I'm clumsy enough during daylight.

I also do not wear my head phones when running at night. Its very important to assist less vision with more hearing when running at night.

Chart out your course/courses over light during the weekend. You can go to www.walkjogrun.com and map this out and it will accurately measure out for you your distance. I look for well lit streets and smooth sidewalks. I make sure I have reflective gear on and have a blinker (Amphipod; cheap and battery lasts forever) I…

Here's a good article that shows scientific studies done from both sides of the diet soda argument. For me, since its still under debate, I avoid. http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/diet-sodas-and-weight-gain-not-so-fast

Yes; forgot about those kettlebells. LOL

There comes a point where progression has to end. I mean do you see people overhead pressing a truck? So other strategies like cross training become helpful to mix things up and add new challenge. Good examples are; sandbag work, dragging large tires, plyometric work etc. Do that kind of stuff for a while to suppliment the…

If you put everything you ate in a day on one plate. Let's say that the plate content was mainly leafy vegetables and cooked vegetables 70%. 10% were from lean proteins, 7% fruits, 10% healthy grains (ex; brown rice) and 3% good fats (ex; olive oil or nuts) then you would find ironically that 70-80% of your calories for…

I think you already know the answer. The question is are you ready for it? I had to go through this myself. Actually it was my trainer that told me what to do. Its very hard to do this all by yourself. You need a coach and give that coach permission to be in your face. She said, the only way is to completely stop all the…

Your shoes are the most important. Properly fitted and a model that works best for your type of foot and gait and running. Don't worry about the brand too much. Take price out of the equation. The absolute best shoe for you could be the $75 pair and not the $200 pair. That's great you are going to a Running specialty…

Advice so far is good. My cousin is an Airborne Ranger. PT varies but expect to run 6 miles at a 6:30 pace 5-6 days a week. You, especially when new will be "smoked" that is 'initiated'. Be able to do 50+ pushups and 6+ pullups (strict form- be able to do 10) and 50+ situps (with someone holding your feet down) and this is…

This seems to be a shoe ('trainers'- that's so adorable!) problem. It could also be due to form and repeated use. The problem with treadmills and other machines is that it somewhat limits the scope of our movement and can cause repeat motion related injuries that would not have happened if you were running on a trail/road…

By being careful what you eat will allow you better appetite control as you obviously are exhibiting and you will feel and be healthier. Weight loss alone is stupid. Weight loss with improved health is a beautiful thing. But, I would not eat such a low amount given the information you provided. Our body will fight againt…

Lack of energy is never fun! I think of 4 major factors that influence my energy levels; in nor certain order; sleep, stress, diet, exercise. I know there are many other causes but most of the time I can track an increase or lack of energy to one of these. Coincidentally, many times I discover that my fatigue is merely in…

Happily married for 26 years. I guess my criteria before this was obvious attraction but then personality. But, I think a lot of folks might do themselves some good and prevent future heartache by watching or re-watching the movie Shallow Hal. Inner qualities are what last and what will put you into a life long…
