Some new models being released came through my email. Most mid-high end Polar monitors have a "Smart Coach" feature called "OwnZone" which listens to the status of your heart rate and provides you a target range for your training session to ensure you're not over training that day. "Polar OwnZone® determines your personal heart rate limits for a training session. Depending on…

I would be amazed if you didn't need an app to communicate the vivosmart to the phone. That's just the way all of these 3rd party watches work with phones.
-
Yup, I stand corrected. The H7 strap does transmit both signals, thus working with gym equipment. Nice stuff.

I dug around some more. The older models can't do stroke count. The Ambit3 can. Thanks for that suggestion veloman21, that's a neat device.

You're right, I had Ant+ written there before posting, but I just didn't want to confuse things buy bringing up Ant+ when my ultimate conclusion was that it doesn't work underwater. Bluetooth can be paired with Ant+ on the same chip, you just need the proper drivers. They're both lower power transmission technologies.

This is quite the challenge. 24/7 monitoring devices are a new category. They take advantage of the lower power Bluetooth (BT) requires, and thus use that to transmit data while keeping things waterproof (they say water-resistant). Since they're BT, they essentially assume you have a smartphone to sync, but most will come…

910XT can monitor stroke count, the Suunto can't. Here's a statement from Suunto "The accelerometer in the Ambit is currently not able to provide stroke or cadence information, although all feedback is taken into consideration when developing future updates." Perhaps that is the reason? The Suunto also can't transmit LIVE…

Hi Marilyn, One thing that stood out from your comment was the "built in gps". The Vivosmart, nor the Vivofit unfortunately do not have an integrated GPS. The Vivosmart and the Vivofit are very similar. -=Vivosmart=- Displays steps, calories, distance and time of day Vibration alerts for calls, texts and emails from your…

Unfortunately I have zero experience with New Balance HRMs. They could very well be outsourcing their product to Polar, or another manufacturer and re-branding.

Hi Stef, thanks for the input and that is a good point. Apple users should be aware though that you require at least an iPhone 4s for that functionality since earlier models to not have the appropriate Bluetooth chip. Not everyone has this, nor looking to buy a new phone to obtain that functionality. Also, as stated above,…

Oh boy, these are two very different things. The Polar Loop is meant to be worn all day, where an FT4 would really only be when you're exercising since it's main use is Heart Rate which needs a chest strap. -=Polar FT4=- My wife has this one. It's a no frills heart rate monitor and she loves it. If it's your first device,…

Did you use MFP calorie calculator? or BodyMedia's? Bodymedia seems to want me to eat more.
-
I wish I could type this in HUGE letters... Based on what I've read, the BodyMedia Fit is the ONLY device to have CLINICALLY PROVEN it's accuracy. That means devices such as: FitBit Striiv Nike FuelBand Jawbone UP Endomondo Nike+ Running are all just guessing the calories based on rules of thumb. There's no clinical…

I think if you're just concerned on knowing your calories burned during exercise, maybe just get a good HRM like POLAR or GARMIN. They will be pretty accurate, and I feel especially the new Garmin models with FirstBeat technology. The reason being is because you can also keep track of your intensity (how hard you're…

http://www.bodymedia.com/Professionals/Key-Publications/Am-J-Clin-Nutr-2007857429- There's a link. It also looks like 93-94% accurate. This is the best video I have ever found on youtube explaining it's ability. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyGfdt2S9Wo I own the CORE, and the LINK. I don't like the core because I don't…

It's confusing to me as well. What I find is the easiest way, is 1. Set your calorie goal on MFP as what the calorie consumption goal on bodymedia's website. 2. Use MFP to enter in the foods you ate. 3. Use bodymedia's website to monitor your calories burned and your calorie deficit. MFP automatically sends the calories…

I have a Polar F6, and It's great. I have had it a few years now, and have also worn it while swimming in swimming pools. It is recommended not to operate the watch buttons while in water, so I've stayed away from that and no problems.
