The first Highlander movie... There can be only 1! And The Princess Bride (ok, so make that 2...)

That's very tricky ground - and I have about 10 years of experience with it. I made what was probably a mistake in staying 'out of it' and letting his mom be the real parent, but in the end it all worked out. But also, spanking is even less constructive/helpful a punishment when it's not even your own parent doing it. Like…

This, but also, they've pretty much proven that spanking kids f*'s them up for life. I was brought up way old school - single mom, Irish heritage, etc. I had the crap beaten out of me (not that I wasn't quite the hand-full, mind you...). So, when I became a parent, I fell into the same habit, but I have to say I've dropped…

You realize you just gave the guy some fantastic exposure... I bet Amazon just lit up with Gary Taubes searches.

I love the word 'whilst,' and hardly anyone ever uses it. Thanks! :flowerforyou: For me, I sometimes eat them back, and sometimes I don't. Depends on how hungry I get. Everyone's metabolism is different, and the MFP tool is just an estimate of several estimates - the chances of it being right on the money for how many…

Learn. Read everything you can, obsessively. Information is truly power. Spend a good amount of time going through these message boards, and ask questions (like you did here). This is a great community, and very supportive. I've been exercising since I was 12 years old, and now (many many many years later), I've actually…

I'm trying the Paleo approach, which cuts all grains/pastas/rice, sugar (obviously, right?). I try - and generally do - keep my daily carbs in the 70-90 range, and they all come from fruits and veggies. Not in the order, either. Oh, yeah, and I do allow my self the occasional adult beveridge: red wine, some tequila. I'm…

Agree with this, but I'd add StrongLifts 5x5. But definitely get the book "Starting Strength"!!
-
I'm still working with pretty light weight, so I do 2 (even lighter) warm up sets, and then jump into my work sets. As my work sets go up in weight, I'll add a few more warm up sets, but I doubt I'll ever do more than 4-5 warmup sets.

My 7yo is a carb fiend. I'd love him to try paleo, but he is totally not into it. We give him protein enriched pasta, and we can get him to eat chicken and some veggies, but for the most part, he's hotdogs (with rolls) and peanut butter sandwiches. And he's a stubborn little cuss! (Can't imagine where he gets *that*…

It's great if it goes well, and potentially worse than hell if it blows up. So, big risk balanced against a potentially huge pay off. You need to do the math and decide based on your tolerance for risk, and how big the attraction is/how successful you think the two of you will really be over the long haul. If it's just…

Awesome song. For me... Louis XIV by Louis XIV

I would start some muscle building exercises, as well. The fat will come off faster, and you'll have a better body composition when it does come off. Don't worry, you won't look like a body builder - you'll just look fit and healthy. Honestly, try squats (with a barbell) and other full body exercises. Obviously, start with…

Agree with this. Also, just take small bites... 'tasting' doesn't require you to actually eat very much of whatever it is you'll have in front of you. If you keep the portions you're taking small, you might not even leave ketosis. What's the cut-off...? Something like under 100 carbs in a day, ish?
-
Just chiming in to completely agree with everyone else that you're doing fine - just keep it up and stay positive!
-
I do believe you're right... I might even already have the cinder blocks somewhere in the shed...
-
"There are several excellent ways to impinge the shoulder, none of them involving the [2-hand overhead] press."
-
Oh man, I hadn't thought about that... Now I'm going to have to reconsider the cinder block thing. My wife will think I'm Hercules the day I crush a cinderblock.

1. What's an "RDL"? Some type of lunge? 2. From what I've read/heard, if you're hitting quad problems when you squat, you should check your form first. Some common form problems: a. If you're too vertical in the squat, it overloads your quads. Be sure you're hip angle is closed enough/your back is horizontal enough. If the…

I was thinking about doing them outside until the weather starts to suck (translation: snow). Still, with squats every workout, there's plenty of stabilization work going on there, so losing that part of doing it seated might not be too bad to give up. I'll try it both ways and see which feels better. Maybe it will be…

It's funny, I was thinking about cinder blocks - and yeah, I'm working out at home, too. If I were at a gym, I'm sure there'd be extra plates lying around that I could use. About the power rack - no, but I do have a squat rack. I tried setting the pins on the catch bar to their lowest, but it's about 6 inches too high. I'd…

I confess, I'm still not even sure what it is we're talking about here - although if I'm making the right assumptions based on the action figure graphic... say what?
-
Lol, deadlifts and squats gotten too easy for you? :glasses:
-
Lol, I think we might have been separated at birth - I really enjoy yoga, and try to do that at least a few times a week. Still, for now, I'm trying to do *nothing* on my off days, just to see how my body reacts to the new workout schedule and exercises. I also agree with you on sleep... last night my idiot self somehow…

Just came across this one: "A squat cannot be performed on a Smith machine any more than it can be performed in a small closet with a hampster. Sorry." (Starting Strength, Rippetoe)

Is it *only* inherited, or just more likely to develop if you have it in your family history?

I also agree that at 33, you shouldn't let your age even creep into your head as a limitation. I'm not sure how I got to the point where I can look at someone in their early 30's and say this with authority, but you really are still quite young, with plenty of testosterone to help you recover. Even though I just started…

Sounds like you two need to have a talk. Honestly, if there's a compatibility problem between how you want to look and how he wants you to look, you should get it out in the open. Don't change for anyone other than yourself. First off, it will be very difficult to maintain it, but also, you'll naturally start to resent the…
