If you have had an eating disorder, your metabolism may be screwed and not yet recovered. Have a word with your physician. My experience with weightloss: My metabolism is messed up due to a thyroid issue, and I can't have two glasses of wine, even if I am under the calorie goal. If I do I gain one kilo (two punds), and…

First, we have all experienced the thrill of starting something to change our lives, only to see it fall apart after a few days. Perhaps they are just waiting to see if you stick with is? As for your boyfriend, do you go with him, shopping, do you write shopping lists, do you offer to go shopping, or do you just expect him…

It can be and appear very obsessive. This is particularly true if you log while eating, or you break off conversations or events with him in order to log. Or you let it interrupt social situations, such as eating with friends. If you are not obsessive, you'll use it as a learning tool, to teach yourself what a healthy…

Your skin dilemma, response 2: 1: If you lose weight fast, you will have flabby skin. 2: If you are young, it will tighten up quicker than if you are older. 3: Sometimes moisturising can help. This is not the magic cure some cosmetic brands pretend it to be, so don't throw money after expensive promises. Get something…

My feet were constantly swollen and hurting, and I retained water very easily. It was uncomfortable and a bit scary. I changed the diet to try to get rid of all that water, and then the weight started to just come off! Now, almost 7 kilos later and 1 kilo away from the original (but not serious) goal I am still losing…

As you get closer to a normal BMI, you also have less weight to lose. I have no idea what your weight is now, but you look really good in your pictures! You can't have too much spare weight. So: you're fit, you don't have a lot to lose, and you work out a lot for a marathon, probably also building more muscle. You may…

OK, this was interesting and weird, so I checked. The betakaroten is released from cooking, making it more accessible. However, if you don't want to lose vitamins, you have to cook them very briefly, not heat the carrots in the water but drop them into boiling water, and you have to use the water as well, and they should…

Unless you're seriously trying to reach ketosis, don't worry about the carrots. However, they are much better for you raw than cooked, as they will contain more of the good stuff, and also add fiber. Cooked the fiber will be broken down and the vitamins will be washed out, leaving very little but the sugar.

Of course it depends on how you walk or bike. If you just roll along very slowly, it's easier than walking, but if you push a little, it's tougher than if you just walk along easily. So I'd say: The real difference is in the muscles you use. I'd think it's better to mix biking and walking, because then you work out…

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks.

1: Work out, so there's plenty of room for something extra. 2: Eat the really dark (70% or more) chocolate. A reason to avoid empty calories while losing weight is that you already eat so little, it can be hard to get enough of the right nutrients. Really dark chocolate is however rich on several antioxidants, as well as…

And, while we are nitpicking: You claim that your recipe is good for a long list of allergies. If you are to claim that a recipe is safe for people allergic to nuts, you really need to specify that they can not use for instance coconut milk in the recipe. Nut allergy is one of the truly dangerous allergies, as people tend…

I just put in one of your smoothies, using both the fitness pal calculator and, to double check, another list of nutrition for the same foods. Just one of your smoothies comes to over 1100 calories. It contains, besides a whole lot of fruit, a cup of coconut milk (which was my choice for the smoothie) and a cup of oats. A…

This is tricky, a real catch 22. I suspect you'd hate to hear people tell you at every chance that you're fat and should get off your *kitten* and walk. At the same time you don't want to be lied to. I tend to try to keep my mouth shut, and if I am invited to comment, I try to discuss what they can do with clothes and…

I am absolutely certain you'll have a lot of better responses to this, but as far as I understand it's not about speed, but about your effort. So an out-of-shape person who runs for one hour at top speed will burn as much as or even more than the really fit person who runs twice the distance. This is why people go the…

I had a rather depressing summer, weight-loss wise. I was physically very active, and I kept to the diet, except for having cream on my strawberries. I didn't feel guilty about that, as every day included something like 3-6 hours of challenging and varied physical activity. Nothing happened for more than a month!!! Luckily…

I was on low-carb not for weight-loss but for medical reasons. I did lose weight, but it also made me tired and a little foggy. And I went far beyond the 3 week-mark, I kept it up for months. When I was better (allergies and a horrible yeast-infection sorted out) I started on a low-glycemic index diet. This worked like a…

You may never be able to fit into some of the fashions. I have always had strong, muscular calves, and even when I was very slim, they didn't fit the "skinny" fashion or most boots. It had little to do with working out too much. My daughter in law, who is an accomplished athlete, a strong skier and runner, has a problem…

I was thinking - I don't know if this is a secret to weight loss, but my doctor told me that a period of grief - with exhaustion, a certain amount of letting yourself go, and lower activity levels - is common after a hysterectomy. It makes sense, as it's a vital part of the female body which is gone. This may be why I…

Meat, cheese, etc is quite easy, as you know what the package weighs, and how much of it you eat. If you have a 500 gram package with 4 chicken breasts in it, each one is 125 grams. If you don't want to start weighing your food, keep reading the labels and keep remembering what you buy and how much you use. If you cook for…

I only gained 3-4 kilos, and never thought it might have anything to do with my hysterectomy - but now you guys mention it, that's the one main change in diet and lifestyle over the last years, after 10 years of maintaining my diet very well! I'd love to know more about this, if it's a common problem.

Protein works for me. If you are always a bit busy and late and need something really quick, start carrying an emergency low-carb protein shake. I kept a small bag of protein in a drawer at the office, and would mix it with milk and drink it when the cravings got unbearable. (This was when I lost the most weight I have…

I'd get a bike (and a very good lock) and ride to a bus-stop that's 30-45 minutes away, leave the bike and get the bus to work. Then repeat on the way home. It cuts down a little on the busride (depending on your route and bus, perhaps even a lot), and gives you a 60-90 minute easy extercize every day. I get my 40-50…

I am not a runner any more, but I live in extremely hilly landscapes, so running up and down hills has been part of my life. :-) When you climb a steep incline, you can't afford to waste motion by being imprecise about how you put your feet down (particularly not if it's in the mountains and not on a road.) If you're…

Vitamin K deficiency can lead to easy bruising. It helps the blood coagulate, if you lack it you will bruise or bleed easily. This Wikipedia article suggests some foods that contains Vitamin K: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_K As you'll see it's things like kale and broccoli. It won't ruin your diet and it is…

I am not sure your estimates of what you eat can be correct. I checked what MFP would put a meal of 2 cups of brown rice and 200 gram of grilled chicken breast, and it came out at over 900 calories. If you eat two meals like that a day, and a breakfast of around 400 calories, you'll be well above 2000 calories in one day.…

I eat between 1200 and 1400, and it's not a problem at all. For breakfast either a hardboiled egg, some vegetables and a slice of ham, or oatmeal porridge made with water, which I then eat with low-fat youghurt and some fruits or berries. If I have been feelign very hungry I mix some protein powder into it. With this water…

You say you have a history of eating disorders. Then you go on to talk about how you want to starve yourself because you can't measure yourself today, and you want to buy 3 measuring tapes so he can't get at them and keep you from measuring yourself. Your fiancé is obviously not handling this well, but he may have a reason…

It's quite common here to prepare a sandwich and bring to work. Just a slice of healthy bread - whole grain - a slice of cheese or ham, a couple of slices of cucumber or tomato, cut in half, fold, wrap in wax paper and keep for when the craving hits at 10 am. If you make a habit of it, get a nice, efficient lunch-box and…

One of the dieting tricks doctors I have talked to emphasize is to eat often. This means more than three meals a day, at least 5-6. These should of course not be huge meals, but healthy, small ones. If you skip breakfast and don't eat until noon, you have to hurry up if you want to have more than 3 meals. At the same time,…
