I just kicked off my season with a little local pool swim race that I have never bothered to do before... it was my first relatively "cold" race with temps around 42 when we started. By the time we hit the run it was absolutely perfect! I could get used to this. I am pretty much settled on doing Diamondman at Lums Pond in…

My friend did IMMT last year - it looked amazing. Enjoy the training and the race! I recently decided to have a sprint-only season (with extra running). I am going to focus on increasing my fitness by fitting in strength training and getting faster at shorter distances with speed work and weight loss.

I did realize that neither example exactly fit my situation. Gah! I don't know where the rest of my post went. Anyway - it's my first full, not afraid to DNS if I need to, ramped up quickly last fall from very minimal summer running to 35-40 miles a week for half training and I felt fantastic. We will just see! Thanks for…

Oh this is perfect. I want to try to do the LBI 18 miler in a few weeks so I was thinking of doing 10-12 this weekend, 15 next weekend, then 18 the following. I think the seems doable. I have some rides thrown in over the next month too but probably only one a week. You are the best resource!

Yes! I am quite familiar with treadmill buoy stories. :D I heard that all the beach patrol were struggling, and once I thought back it explained why I would sight and have plenty of room between them and me, and then the next time I'd look up I was about to run into one. The drama on the facebook page is so hot and heavy.…

Okay, so for starters - I did NOT hear the announcer!!! What a bummer! I am just going to try to remember it as if I did. :D I also didn't hear my name at the finish. I was in the ZONE. :D Thank you so much for spectating. That run was brutal for me and I needed every shout out and cowbell I got! Evidently I got scalp burn…

That's a really smart suggestion with the mailbox! We are actually having a feed zone party tonight - I have a bunch of women coming over and we are going to measure out a partial aid station and try it, including with others choosing to skip the station. We are also going to practice passing (and not drafting) - six bike…

And I look forward to using the human obstacles as an excuse for my run pace! ;)

I know, it is not the most appealing race for me! But yes, if my friends jumped off a bridge... or a ferry... or the side of Bader Field....
-
That's wild. Good to know they work like that! :D I have been reading up on training for hills without hills. Hard intervals in lower gears, riding into wind, and strength training seem to be the main recommendations. I can do that!
-
Ugh, I know I should find it encouraging, but I have been swimming so long and have seen so little improvement, hearing about other people shaving more than three minutes off the bat is rough. :D I definitely need to pick it up to 3-4 hours a week I think. I am *so* much faster in a wetsuit, and in salt water, I think that…
-
So did you end up just bagging the wetsuit? What a fantastic race - congratulations on killing your time goal! I really aspire to the day that the bike course is merely challenging but not difficult for me. I don't know how to train for such steep, long hills when I don't have any near me. (The rest of it was perfect -…

FANTASTIC! Loved your report. Congratulations on the PR, strong finish, and snagging the roll-up! Love that you practically matched your Oly swim time from last year. It's so funny, I keep seeing people say how hard the run was. I guess it's because it's easier to slow down/walk on the run than it is to slow down on the…

Posting a race report separately.... LOVED IT!!!!!!

Thank you! Bilateral breathing is something I have done from the word go. I think I have a few advantages from having learned to swim formally as an adult, for triathlon purposes, and that's one of them. All good advice. With my masters coach, I felt like I had a very hard time either understanding or implementing his…
-
Thank you! I know I rambled!!! I guess my question really was, how do you make sense of completing contrary advice? The two big differences I see between the traditional freestyle type advice from coach 1 and the Total Immersion style advice from coach 2, are (1) coach 1 says as soon as your hand hits the water, pull back,…

Oh, and endless thanks Glevinso... we have been poring over your maps and your ride recap!!!!! I cannot thank you enough.

I'm practice riding the Rev3 Poconos course on Saturday! I have no idea what to expect and it think it may be a real wake up call. We'll see!
-
Thanks! I didn't even think of just sitting a camera on the floor of the pool. My kids have a really basic Go Pro type camera, no idea how high quality it is, but that's worth a shot. I am just so torn with HOW to do it. For instance, the instructor I worked with talked about holding your breath for the first stroke or two…
-
That's FANTASTIC. Thank you!!! Now I need to develop high-speed turning skills. ;) I can't find a place to practice those!
-
Rev3 Poconos!!! I have a little band of my club doing it with me.

I was just rereading this thread and, funny. We did a wave start treading water at my sprint this weekend, and I was in the last wave. I actually had my dreams come true and it sucked. :D I hung back so I was the last one in the wave, which was a mistake even for the swim, and then there was way too much dodging and…
-
Damn. You were asking for it! Are you happy with the new ride? Congrats on your impressive finish! Capt, that's a huge bummer. How is the shoulder? Can you still run? I assume biking and swimming are out?
-
How did y'all do at Quassy? :)
-
This is happening to me right now... it worked perfectly on my first ride, and after all the software updates, it won't work anymore. I will check for the light and possibly change the battery if I don't see it. What a hassle. Thanks for posting.

Thanks!! That is helpful. After I posted here, I found a guy on youtube who Go Pro'd the whole bike/run in 2014. Can't 100% tell how challenging the grades are but I feel like I have a great grasp on how technical it is. And tons of footage of people passing easily, which is a relief. It is a two-lap race, so I realized…

I'm also near Philly and I consider doing the Across the Bay run every time it comes up. I run Ragnars (road and trails) with a bunch of folks from the VA/MD area. I've been running about four years steadily, about three have involved triathlons... focusing on that this year as I've signed up for a half-Ironman in…

Awesome, thanks. I have several books with suggested lifts but it's hard to parse through them all so I'm glad to have some specific recommendations. Just to clarify, it's definitely not that I think I need to add strength for swim; but I WANT to do strength, and I figured if I could also do something to advance my swim in…

Congrats Scott! lj, I listened to a podcast this morning about how pelvic health therapists are sometimes the answer for back problems after pregnancy. Seemed like there was a small chance this would be good info for you so I'm throwing it out there. Had never heard of them before! Don't beat yourself up if you really feel…

I bet if you were able to work in more than one ride a week it would get better. I am not well informed on bike training, but if you analogize to run training, that's probably like doing just a 10 miler every week. You need more base mileage to support a run that long - I suspect the same concept is true in cycling.
