  • What I also think we can all agree on is that it is nasty and rude when a faster runner tallies you as a kill. I'm preparing to be kill counted this weekend at Ragnar. Do not enjoy.
  • I think this sounds awesome for your marathon AND your time with your daughter, but I'm curious about whether you just work sweaty, or have access to a shower? I am so jealous of people who manage to fit working out into their work day. I used to have a gym and shower onsite, which was fantastic.
  • I think there are really two issues: (1) do you feel like it's an insult when a faster runner encourages you, which I think most people can admit that they know other runners mean well, but the more important issue is (2) do you feel motivated or encouraged when a faster runner says something to you? What feels better,…
  • That's my plan. :) Although other tris, I swear off racing until September.
  • That's pretty much what I did! Smashed my prior official race PR by :58 and my training PR by :40. I am thrilled! Not exactly my intended strategy - I completely got swept up and went out at 7:38. Second mile at 8:09, third at 8:27.... but I nailed a huge PR and strategy be damned!!!! 25:20. I had a goal of 25:59 and a…
  •   Yeah, this is the first time I have raced a 5k knowing WTF I am doing. Even slightly. The last time I really raced one I was still in this phase where I was running all my races as intervals. I've pushed myself to race pace in training runs but I am definitely worried about getting swept up in the…
  • I always feel very uncomfortable passing someone who is clearly struggling or very slow or walking during Ragnar relays, because everyone is spread pretty thin, and there is no relationship between running ability and where you are in the pack, so it's usually me, that person, and the road or trail. I get nervous and…
  • I am relying almost entirely on McMillan for my 5k tomorrow. I have timed 1/2 miles, 1 miles, a 10-miler, and a half that all put me right around the same goal for the 5k. Wish I had something closer to 5k but these will do! I am going to go out near the high end of where I'd like to end up and see how I feel.
  • Since it's one of many halfs you will do this year and you are also tackling a marathon, I would consider it good for the ego and motivation and suck it up. If I were only looking to do one or two races in the year I would probably look for one where I would have a better chance at being middle of the pack. Agree DFL>DNF.
  • Thanks! I have not tried paddles. I will do that!
  • Thank you all! So helpful. I know my biggest issue is arm technique - I am a windmiller. And get me in the open water and all the technique I have managed to acquire goes out the window! I'm not nervous about it at all, really, it's just that it's harder than the pool, because there is no shallow end. (Usually. )…
  • Running even effort is such a good one, though. I have seen that twice now on the same most challenging hill in the two Philly halfs I have run - people keep their pace up the hill and then end up walking a good stretch at the top.
  • Haddonfield Adrenaline 5k is the Midatlantic 5k Championship. I think it is slightly downhill most of the way (but still USATF certified) and super straight. A very fast course - winners come in under 15 minutes. (And then you can take the speed line into Philly for the day.) This is an article about it:…
  • This may be the best illustration of the challenge of long distance running I have ever read. Never thought about it that way before. That does make it sound so much more uncomfortable!
  • Ding! We have so many 10 milers around here! About to do one of the fastest - Broad Street in Philly. I do love them because it's a fairly challenging distance but doesn't wear me out like a half. Personally I wish there were more sprints and 1-2 milers for my kiddo who is just starting to run.
  • Do you have a watch, or are you using an app and only checking in at the end of each mile? It sounds like you need a more constant source of info about your pace so that you can slow yourself down not even just after the first mile, but within the first mile. For long runs, tell yourself that you are not allowed to go…
  • I have my tri club's annual Friday Night 5k coming up on June 6. The last race on my calendar prior to it is a full month earlier, the Broad Street Run in Philly (10 miler), so that will not interfere. The only potential issues are (a) evening run - though I do a lot of training runs in the evening) and (b) I am trying to…
  • Dave, congrats on giving it a shot! I can't imagine that distance under those conditions. I finished my month today with 13.1- it was a small goal of 70 but I feel great that I stayed on track.
  • I agree, I'm glad it was different! I like that the races have their own character, I had been worried that it would feel like a repeat. Funny that they acknowledge it is longer than 13.1 - good to know. I will have to check that next time. It seems like it would be so easy to just move that turn-around up to make it…
  • Glympse. :) We use it for Ragnar relays. Works like a charm!
  • Great advice! Tagging.
  • Great work!!!
  • I didn't train well. Laying down the miles is the key!
  • Thanks for sharing the recap! I am so impressed that you went out and got it done in the rain, sick. It's kind of nice to have a baseline you know you can top next time... I am running into the sad fact that I have no chance of topping my first half time in this next one, and it's a bummer!
  • This is the best part!!! It's amazing to look so much better, but feeling stronger, more capable, and healthier is the hugest win. Great work!
  • 70 miles. Running my second half on March 30!
  • It looks to me from your diary that you have been working on this for about three weeks. Your intake is probably averaging higher than 1300 or maybe even 1500 - I saw several days that were more in the 1650 neighborhood just scrolling through. People's caloric needs vary, so you can't be sure how much of a deficit you have…
  • I'm in a tri club, so it's more expansive than just running, but... wow. Find the right club, and your workout life will suddenly consume you. :D Mostly of my friends and socializing now revolve around the club. I do anywhere from 1-4 workouts a week with them. It's incredible to have a group there to motivate you - it…
  • You look fantastic, you are working hard, and best of all, you are doing it because it improves your life! Great work and fantastic attitude!
  • I like passing home - I stow a water bottle and a gel if I want one in my mailbox so I don't have to worry about having them on the road. That said, I usually only do this when I run with my group - I really enjoy going the distance on the long runs and get a kick out of seeing how many towns I can pass through in one run.…
