  • Hi isabelrose88 - I love the iphone synching, too! Especially the barcode feature. :) @exermom - thanks for taking the time to respond individually. Your post was amazing. Belated Happy Birthday, Polly! Your post was equally awesome. (To answer your question, I do ice-skating/figure skating. Used to coach it, but now just…
  • This probably won't convince you, but yes...they're quite real. ;) I used to experience their high almost weekly after certain 1.5 to 2-hr. cardio workouts at the rink in my twenties...I remember driving home at night with the windows rolled down singing at the top of my lungs. ;D Nature's own healthy high. Totally…
  • And this is truth sprinkled with grace. Well said.
  • Honestly, I'm doing this because: Short-term: I want my beach body back for a vacation in October (hence the user name). Up until three years ago, I was tiny and athletic, so I can still remember how that felt, I deeply miss that old familiar body, and still have a closet full of beautiful, smaller-sized clothes to fit…

  • Haven't read the 5 pages, so this might have already been said...but you're right when you say you need to find something to do that you enjoy. I loathe workout equipment and gyms...but I love nature and I love music. So when my "exercise" involves those, it doesn't feel like punishment, but release, relaxation, even…
  • Good morning, all. I'm amazed at how many are on this thread, and how many are serious about working out. The over-50 crowd isn't what it used to be. ;) Amanda, a 4-hour walk is indeed inspirational. Your before/after photo is even more so. You've definitely motivated me to get moving this morning. (PS. Your grandchildren…
  • Yes, I read the labels. That's how I realized today that the MFP barcode reading for Yoplait Light Nonfat Peach Harvest (6 oz. snack size) didn't match the label on the snack cup. ;) Snack cup says 100 calories; barcode printout said 90. Go figure.
  • Hi all, just noticed this thread tonight (I've only been a member since the end of June). I'm a 57-year-old wife and mom with a recent empty nest, and also am feeling my age for the first time in my life. I recently committed to losing the weight gained since being diagnosed with Hashimotos thyroiditis about 3 years ago.…
  • Hilarious. :D
  • Most of my life I've had the ballerina variety, so I never did get used to them with the weight gain after my thyroid disease started. Happy to start having my own body back again. ;)
  • Absolutely inspiring! You look like the daughter of the woman in the "before" picture. ;)
  • I could easily go through a whole bag of SunChips, especially the Salsa variety. But when I get the salty munchies, now, I pop a snack bag of Orville Redenbacher's Low Fat Popcorn in the microwave (100 calories for the snack size/200 for the larger size). Since it takes a while to eat a whole bag, it satisfies that…
  • I'm able to do this on my phone by clicking on the diary entry for that one food item; when the edit page comes up, touch the amount number and reenter the corrected amount.
  • Absolutely this. (And I've only been doing this for 5 weeks.) Also, and maybe this is just me, I'd like to do away with the screen announcement that comes after completing my daily entries. The one that says, 'if you continue doing the same thing, in 5 weeks you'll weigh such-and-so'. Even on my best days it's daunting;…
  • Oh, wow...yes, I think we must be. To me, any tumor bigger than a newborn sounds astronomical, so the pound numbers start to blur. ;-)
  • Was your story in the news recently? I think I remember reading something almost exactly like this; the doc was saying it was the largest tumor he'd ever removed, and it was quite a dicey surgery. Glad all went well, and congrats on the weight loss.
  • "Hashimoto's disease is a disease, and hypothyroidism is a condition. Hypothyroidism is most commonly caused by Hashimoto's disease, but the two terms are not interchangeable. Here is more information to help understand the difference..." (See excellent 2-page discussion at this link:…
  • Diagnosed with Hashimoto's three years ago after having a year or two of weird symptoms including depressive episodes, sluggishness, and weight gain. Had pregnancy symptoms and even breakthrough bleeding 10 years after menopause, and about 6 months later heart attack symptoms finally sent me to the ER. (The thyroid…
  • Because they're also low-activity. (Gotta say, I thrive on carbs. And I'd get pretty cranky without them. My diet is probably 2/3 carbs, mostly of the fruit/veggie variety, because those are generally low-calorie, low-fat, high-energy foods.)
  • Kirkland Signature Wild Pacific Sockeye Salmon (4.5 oz ~ 225 calories) in the freezer section. Individually shrink-wrapped, and taste like fresh, even though frozen. My favorite Costco food!

  • This, too. A workout without music is a workout without soul (or adrenalin).

  • This. ^^^ It really helps that I've enjoyed a sport for over 35 years that is essentially solitary (figure-skating). So I've never depended on anyone else to go work out with me (in fact, I prefer to go alone). But as I'm now in my mid-fifties, I have noticed a growing tendency to blow off working out if I wait to do it in…

  • It helps me, no question. I log anything I eat right after eating it; the accountability of logging keeps me honest, and compels me to measure and weigh amounts instead of guessing. Logging right after eating (or exercising) keeps me reminded every time I open my mouth that I'm on a fitness plan, and is reinforcing that…
  • I live in the part of the country where we have 100-degree temps most of the summer. Not a problem, though--my favorite workout place is an ice rink, year-round. You should have little difficulty finding one in Canada. ;)
  • I was diagnosed hypothyroid (Hashimoto's disease) 4 years ago. Every time I get checked it seems my dose needs to go up. I'm now on 125mcg Synthroid (doc says no generic), and 5mcg of Liothyronine daily (a form of T4--gives me a tad bit more energy than just Synthroid alone). This particular thyroid disease means my…
  • (The processed, sugary foods cause rapid blood sugar spikes that soon plummet blood sugar levels to even lower than they were before--causing hunger and food cravings. To avoid this, try to keep your blood sugar levels steady with enough protein to tide you over from one meal to the next, and satisfy your sweet tooth with…
  • Hunger is your body's signal that you're losing weight. I disagree that it means that you need to be eating more. If you're dieting, then two sandwiches at lunch is not the way to lose weight. That said, neither is starvation. If you're eating 1200 calories/day and are hungry, it's because you're in a calorie deficit...and…
  • I wouldn't read too much into this. If you're half-way toward a 22-lb. weight loss goal, you're not that overweight to begin with. He's simply expressing his preference for a softer, fuller you. There are many men out there who prefer that. There's a tendency for women to prefer being thinner than the general male ideal.…
  • Just me, maybe, but I've found that all calories are not equal. You mentioned not always 'eating healthy'; I'd suggest eliminating refined sugar and most of the fat from your diet for a day or so just to get past the plateau. Same calories; just used on more fat-free sugar-free foods. Makes a big difference, at least with…
