  • I eat fruit (esp grapes). I find that if I avoid refined sugar, and substitute just raw fruit, it eventually ends the cravings. Same with salty stuff (I've had some serious cravings for both salt and sugar). Everyone's different, but for me, avoidance is the only alternative to deal with sugar/salt cravings. They go away…
  • PS. There should be a rink person on the ice that could assist you in getting up if/when you fall. My way of looking at it is, if you're not falling, you're probably not stretching yourself to learn anything new.
  • I admire you as an adult for taking on this beautiful sport. I learned as an adult 38 years ago, and progressed to the point of instructor after 25 years of (positive) 'addiction' to it. I've taught ages 3 to 60-something, and it's a lot riskier for adults to learn, IMO. Not so much physically, but ego-wise. ;) But it's a…
  • I'm 8 in dog years and have had almost as many careers. I've found them all interesting, so I'm never bored. Though I have no doubt I myself am boring at times. ;) Drive a convertible mini-cooper, though I'm not sure how that makes me interesting...
  • I do, too (along with thousands of other Christians). A belief in heaven and in the God of the Bible is not incompatible with those beliefs, regardless of what media hype might tell you. If interested, here's a view most closely aligning with my own: Pun, Pattle P. 2007. Integration and Confrontation of Contemporary…
  • Just a thought...in my Bible it says He will "wipe away their tears." Which means there could be tears (possibly caused by knowing what's going on down here)...or it could just be a euphemism for being happy. It's amazing how many details we don't really know...but good to consider, anyhow. And it's ironic and fitting that…
  • Completely agree; couldn't have said it better, myself. :) ETA: One of the most thought-provoking books on heaven I've found: Heaven, by Randy Alcorn
  • Be sure to check out this long-running thread. Wonderful 50+ ladies! http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/722010-women-ages-50-for-august-2012
  • Probably the same reason everyone assumes a closed diary means you're starving yourself. “It is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.” ― Abraham Maslow “To assume is to presume.” ― Jude Morgan, Indiscretion
  • Your work is beautiful! And for me, at this stage, it is reinforcing to be able to look at these lovely foods that might have tempted me earlier, and no longer feel tempted. ;)
  • You're on the right track but it's not about the diary being private or not. If you go to Settings at the top of the page, you can adjust privacy for several items, including these: Diary settings Profile privacy settings Automatic News Feed update settings My diary/profile has been private from day one, but my news feed…
  • Lol, yes...it might just. I mentioned this positive reinforcement phrase earlier this month on another thread--I've always been under the impression that that was an "atta girl" at the end of my day. Honestly...I believe if my goal is 1200 calories, and I come in just under that, I've had a good day. Because if I'm under…
  • The first thing I did after putting the app on my iPhone was to log in here and put my profile and diary on private. I did that because this is about my being accountable to myself--not to others--for my choices. The app keeps me honest, and gives me a cumulative record of my nutritional progress. While I don't mind the…
  • interesting thread!
  • No full-time job now, though I used to be a schoolteacher and figure skating instructor. Now I bounce between several part-time job interests: • writer (articles/poetry for adult and children's magazines) • jewelry and handbag designer • online sales of vintage jewelry
  • My hubby bought us a sleek WW (Weight Watchers, by Conair) digital scale at Costco (my daughter bought herself one as well). It's on our bathroom tile floor (also somewhat textured) and we've had no problem with it. Though I did have to finally read the directions (!) to figure out how to get the display to show. (You tap…
  • Hello all! It's late so I will have to keep this short. Went bike-riding today, and realized once again that I need to exercise more than once or twice a week, as I quickly lose stamina if I don't. ;-/ But it did feel good to be riding again, despite the heat. Then went for a swim with the hubby, though I couldn't really…
  • Mine are hanging in my closet.
  • @SundanceB - I know I shouldn't be relieved at the Livestrong study you mentioned (nutrition more important than workouts) but at my age, sluggish as I am, I find it easier to control what I eat than to have a strenuous workout every day. ;) Thanks for that. @ Laura - the cedar plank is soaked in a baking dish or tray in…
  • @janehadji - So happy for you that your son is home safe and sound. Spent a summer in Israel once, and it is so strange to see the army teenagers with guns strapped on. :-/ @ginib - love, love Costco salmon grilled on wet cedar plank (we've been awaiting their cedar plank shipment; theirs are also less costly than at the…
  • Micki - congrats on the "50" milestone! Jo3y20 - so sorry to hear about your sister. I had a similar occurrence going through old pictures a couple months prior to going in to a major depression. Mind/body connections are a mystery, but are very real. Prayers for her. Headed for a swim with my darling hubby, but just…
  • Broadbrush much? So now you've put me in a 'more regulation' camp. Sorry, I refuse to get political about this. What's needed is not more regulation; just honest regulation.
  • I'm too old to feel traumatic about what I weigh. ;) The takeaway message of the article is much broader than the calorie differences between pints of 'diet' ice cream, and if that's going to *gasp* mess with your dieting goals. (And statistically speaking, it's actually pretty significant when 2 random pints of Arctic…
  • Here's the thing...I've found if I want to really watch my eating habits, eating 'diet' ice cream or 'sugar-free chocolate' or other diet substitutions for junk food isn't really conducive to reinforcing my preference for healthy foods. I don't mind indulging every now and then (eg. frozen yoghurt :)), but I'm really more…
  • Sorry. :-/ Maybe switch brands? (Or switch to popsicles...) From the article: "But the biggest gut-buster of all: the new summertime craze, Arctic Zero ice cream. It promises 150 calories for the whole pint: Sounds great. But in our test, the results were less than appetizing. Our sample of Arctic Zero Vanilla Maple had a…
  • We don't need to speculate; the article says the FDA allows for 20% variance. But Arctic Zero's chocolate peanut butter variety was off by 68%. That's illegal, and highly deceptive. Unfortunately, the FDA doesn't have enough manpower to police all these products (the article says) so they're on the "honor system." Yeah,…
  • I did get from your post that you understood the difference between the two. ;) I was only referencing that in my opinion, the person with an ED (mental illness) has far more control over her outcome and health than the person who has a neurological difference. Yes, I've read some, though the studies I've looked at haven't…
  • Uh-oh...For personal reasons, I'm private on this site, and with one exception, have friended only people I know in real life. But we've congratulated ourselves several times for being 'under the calorie goal'. I thought that WAS the goal--to try to hug that recommended net calorie quota (for my age and lifestyle, the site…
  • Heartily agree with the OP, and with this: I think many recovered anorexics have an instinctual edge in understanding what motivates anorexic thinking/behavior.
  • There is, however, a importance difference between having a mental illness such as an eating disorder or depression, and having a neurological difference (eg. Asperger's or Tourette). (And I speak from professional background/degree as well as family experience with all four.) The difference is, the ED or depressed person…
