Getting myself to the gym just wasn't happening, so I built a home gym. My day goes like this:* Work * Get home * Put on workout shorts and sneakers * Eat something and decide I'm not going to lift * Lift anyway * Have a beer

I don't use any placebos, just some water.

There are supplements that are worth taking:* Vitamin D, which most people don't get enough of * Creatine, which can help you do more work, which helps you build muscle and endurance * Protein, in case you're not getting enough from your diet Outside of those, you don't need supplements if you have a decent diet. And the…

Keto is just another way to keep your calories low. I did it for awhile and it was great, very easy and effective, and I felt great. But I like beer too much to do it forever. Lots of people will say that it's not sustainable, but that depends entirely on what you like. Many people have done it consistently for years. Like…

Then change it. Everyone over the age of 17 has the life they've chosen.

Changing pretty much anything in your diet sucks for the first 3-5 days, then you get used to it. It's not about training yourself; it's about getting through a few days of discomfort. Then it's easy.

I do it by deciding to do it. Some days I decide not to do it, and then I do it anyway. I eat perfectly on weekdays and whatever I want on weekends. Also, working out and eating right are the best anti-depressants.

In case you're new, this is called DOMS: Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. I get it too -- REALLY badly -- when I take more than a week or 2 off from lifting and then start up again. Nothing helps me lessen the pain and soreness. Not foam rolling, not stretching before or after working out, not drinking more water, not BCAAs.…

I start every day with 32-ounces of iced coffee (half-caf). It's just black coffee with ice in it, and sometimes a little soy milk. Why not just make yours without the sugar or milk?

edit: Ancient thread - wtf?

This is all that matters. I don't care how much I weigh; I care that my weight is moving in the direction I want it to.

If it works for him, it's the key. Although I wouldn't do it, this doesn't seem at all unrealistic, or even mildly difficult. OP: If you haven't listened to Rogan's podcasts with Rhonda Patrick, I highly recommend them.

Don't get hung up on "healthy" foods. You can lose weight eating nothing but Twinkie's or McDonalds. A good food scale is $12.

A million shows like this is the reason I dumped cable 5 years ago. I also don't slow down to look at car accidents.

I counted religiously for awhile, and learned to have a pretty good feel for how many calories I'm eating. The fact that I eat pretty much the same things every weekday makes it easier as well. Someone above mentioned "portion control containers." That's a pretty good description of what I use. Most of my food is cooked in…

Terrible comment. OP (and everyone else on earth), please ignore. I avoid carbs because they make me hungry. But there's nothing wrong or unhealthy about them if you have a decent diet overall. Yes, this includes pure sugar. And Nutter Butters. And Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby.

Ditto. If you can't control the weight through the entire exercise, you're lifting above your ability.

Working out isn't a magic pill that will immediately make you feel better afterwards. Living a healthy lifestyle - which includes working out - is the only thing that's ever fixed my depression. It's not about working out once and no longer being depressed; it's about being consistent with my workouts, and over time the…

FWIW, I buy all of my electronics refurbished. It's cheap, and in my experience, at least equal to buying brand new. Ebay is a great source for this -- if you buy from a reputable place the item will always come with (at least) a 30-day guarantee.

You've misunderstood what your doctor said, unless he's an absolute nut or you have a very, very serious medical condition. Low carb? Nothing wrong with that. Zero carb? Ridiculous.

I do about 35 minutes, 3-4 times per week. And since I like my program, I don't change it up. I'm not trying to be a power lifter or bodybuilder; I just want to feel good and look okay. But really it depends on your goals. What you're doing sounds fine for basic fitness and a bit of strength. Keep in mind that most people…

I've had 2 knee surgeries, and spent lots and lots of time using the arm bike.

As a backpacker, this doesn't compute. The only way I could overeat on a backpacking trip would be if I started eating dirt and rocks. The lesson: Don't surround yourself with food, and suddenly overeating becomes impossible. What incredible (and incredibly sad) privilege we have to live at a time and in a place where such…

Whether it's worth it depends on your goals and whether you enjoy lifting over other types of exercise. You're not going to become a power lifter while eating at a deficit and without protein, but all of the other benefits of weight training will still apply (including muscle development, assuming you're starting from…

I've spent most of my adult life eating roughly the same things every weekday for months at a time. It makes shopping and cooking easier, and tends to be cheap because I can buy in bulk. It also allows me to cook TONS of food all at once and freeze it in individual containers, saving lots of time overall. It makes it very…

If you (rightfully) believe that they're myths, then why would you worry about it?
-
I responded to all the many gym annoyances by building a home gym. Bonus: There's no excuses not to work out anymore.

Nutter Butters, with a Thin Mint chaser.

I started by eating less of the same foods, but gradually have shifted to low-carb because protein and fat makes me feel full, while carbs make my hungry.
