  • I am sorry. I have no idea where you are coming from....... The question here was: Can you building mass in your glutes without weight training? I said, I don't know. People often say, 'no, in order to build mass you must lift weights and you must lift with some progression in the weights.' But, clearly there appear to be…
  • Okay. I don't see the statement about the layout of stores as a rule so much as an observation and a apt description -- one that points out how much of this processed food we have. It doesn't matter if Nebraska corn goes mostly to feed cows. Clearly, there is still enough left over to create plenty of canned, boxed, and…
  • You're right.....I guess..... But, if portion sizes haven't changed, why is everyone heavier these days, given that the waistlines are made in the kitchen? Or is it not true that one has to eat more to gain weight?
  • I am not going to get into a debate with you. But I believe there is a lot of truth in what he says. But I will say that, yes, corn helps our meat. They fatten cattle up on corn. But, fattened beef has more calories than lean beef. And the statement about grocery stores is an observation made by many people, and it is a…
  • So, your position is that all the muscle that most gymnasts have comes from 30 minutes a day in the gym, not working to failure? I thought you had to lift heavy to gain muscle?
  • Posted by a gymnast on a Bodybuilding.com forum: "Gymnasts don't ACTUALLY do isometric holds for conditioning a lot of the time. Unless you are working a specific strength move (mainly on rings) like an iron cross, planche, maltese or inverted cross, the majority of the conditiong will be dynamic exercises like planche…
  • I would be extremely surprised to learn that their muscles come from weight lifting, yes! They spent most of their time working on their skills, because it requires such skill. Given that, I would doubt that many coaches have them fatiguing themselves -- and losing flexibility -- by lifting heavy weights in the gym and…
  • Um.......Whatever......They are bodyweight exercises and many people doing those activities get big, not just low body fat. Look at the arms on those gymnasts!
  • Sorry to get serious here, but.... In The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollen makes the case that we in America have an excess of cheap calories because corn is an extremely energy dense food, and we have an excess of corn because government subsidizes corn so heavily that a farmer who grows corn cannot lose. He claims that…
  • I think you have heard. Lots of water and gentle movement.
  • Sure. If you do your stronglifts and methodically increase your weights, you can run and get ripped. Couple of things to watch, however. If you get stronger, you may add muscle, maybe a fair amount of muscle. This is not uncommon, especially for someone completely new to lifting. You may find, therefore, that your goal of…
  • I'd like to play devil's advocate here. I used to be a soccer player. I have seen many teenage boy soccer players develop pretty massive legs just by playing soccer, which one would think would be impossible considering how many calories sprinting 4-7 miles a game and maybe 4 miles per practice that it requires. My brother…
  • Wow! This discussion has gone all over the place. I vote for the rower. Rowing provides some resistance and, presumably, some strength training, when done right. I don't think a bike really does. A bike is pure cardio. There are important advantages from doing training that develops strength.
  • You have to follow a strict pace on the rower: 20, 30 strokes a minute. And race towards 1,000 meters, 2,000 meters, 3,000 meters, etc.
  • I'm another who loves it. Sure. It is expensive relative to some gyms. But you get coaching and you get pushed by the other people in the gym. There is a lot of comraderie in a Crossfit gym that you don't find in a regular gym. It makes it fun, which makes it easier to go. And your compatriots push you -- not so much…
  • Go Pat! I love carries and try to do them often. I play tennis, and I never quite realized, until I started doing carries, that my right hand is much stronger than my left. You don't notice it with a barbell, or even pull-ups. But you do when you start doing farmer's carries or pinch carries with a plate.
  • Progress is not a straightforward process. There are setbacks and hurdles. This is one for you. Don't give up the progress you have been making. Get back to that class. You'll get a little bit thicker skin, and you'll be making progress not only in your fitness but in your psychology as well. We all know how you feel. But…
  • I applaud you for wanting to make changes. That is brave and admirable! Many people have success here. Good luck!
  • Okay. smarty pants. But am I wrong to have given him the benefit of the doubt that he was winning? C'mon, tell me. Am I wrong? Thought I was being a generous soul......Sheesh.
  • "You can't really dust for vomit." Nigel, in This is Spinal Tap, discussing how and why the band has lost drummers -- maybe?
  • Your husband is right. But he is also not right, exactly. Yes, running strains your breath. But it is not painful anymore once you develop the aerobic capacity. That's how I would describe it anyways. I am going to guess that you still have some aerobic capacity to develop -- that C25K didn't do it all for you, maybe…
  • Those sound wrong to me. I have a wide foot. Some brands of running shoes come in different widths. Maybe you need a 2E or a 4E, or some other wide shoe. When I was a kid, they used to buy us shoes a size too big, so we could "grow into them." You cannot run well in shoes with extra toe room.
  • Gawd, I hate to honor this with a response.....but......The brain does burn 20-30 percent of a person's calories.....So, you are really not as funny as you think you are being.
  • Never eat on a plane or in the airport. Never eat the social food at the meetings/convention/etc. Limit yourself to two meals a day, because restaurant meals are so high-calorie. If you have a snack make sure it is real, healthy food and that you actually are hungry. But, then, I was never trying to lose weight when I was…
  • I second the salt guy -- and fluids.
  • Um..... Blog posts aren't necessarily the best source of objective information.... Haven't you learned that here? People who have a gripe are much more likely to post than people who are happy and satisfied with a thing. I could probably find a lot of posts ripping Gold's Gym/apple-pie/pizza/God-and-country if I so wished.
  • Are you sure? I do like purple dumbbells.....
  • Okay, now that this has gotten testy and interesting, I have to weigh in. Crossfit has the social element. When you go in to do Crossfit you are working both with and against the group. People there are (generally) emotionally supportive but they push you harder, like a personal trainer does. That is nice, and it is really…
  • If you want extra weight, why don't you carry some dumbbells. The trouble with ankle weights is that they add more heft in a way that is unnatural. They add weight in the swing of the leg. But the way you use strength in your legs naturally is in the push off the ground. It's like the difference between the leg extension…
