  • I am with the others. I think cycling is great cross training. Depending on how hard you ride it can make your legs stronger, and anyway, it works them differently and saves your body some pounding.
  • No. Please. Believe it or not, some of us have the intelligence to discern and interpret motive. We're not all deluded by a notion that we are absolutely irresistible.
  • I have to chime in and agree with the person who said you are overthinking this. Running a bit is not going to make you lose muscle. Lifting less than you used to might. Not eating enough might. But, just like lifters do not get big and bulky without working pretty hard at doing just that, runners don't become stick people…
  • Are you interested in Crossfit at all? Crossfit has a YouTube channel and, yes, much of it is about lifting heavy weights and younger people. But it does have lots of inspirational videos as well. They tell stories about this person who was overweight, or that person who is disabled, etc. Many feature middle-aged people.…
  • I don't have much to add. But I know that when NBA teams have to play in Denver, or the soccer teams have to play in Salt Lake City, they either arrive a day or more early, so they can get a workout -- or couple of workouts -- in at altitude, or they fly in right before game time. I don't know why the second strategy…
  • Party pooper
  • Yeah, I too think that is a little weird that you lost a toe nail when you run only four-mile runs. I do not think I have ever lost a toe nail running, so I am wondering if there isn't something unique about your gait that makes you toe jam up into the toe box. Maybe? But more than likely, your shoes are just too small. Go…
  • Shin splints when I started running. Maybe 6 months in. Everybody (almost) gets them at some point.
  • Definitely, only run every other day. Rest and recovery is extremely important when you are trying to increase distance or improve generally.
  • I don't know about lady parts. But I do know that for guys -- when we get discomfort and/or intense numbness down there -- it is the bike fit more than the type of seat. Right? People tend to get worse discomfort when the bike is too long, and they lean too far forward, or when the seat is too high and they have to reach…
  • I second the bike suggestion. Hide one under your shorts.
  • I exercise strenuously probably six days a week. When I was younger I generally exercised every other day. I think I made better progress with more rest. In fact, I am rather suspicious that we all tend to work out too much. But, then again, I walked a LOT more when I was young than I do now that I am tethered to a desk.
  • Broiler on high, for about 12 minutes. You'll have to figure out exactly how high to have the rack, and exactly how long to cook, since it depends a bit on your oven. But, you want to get a crust on the top, which you will get because you will brush the fish with a quarter cup of maple syrup/teaspoon cayenne pepper. If you…
  • I do it every time too -- every time I can that is. I even finish my daily jogs with a sprint down the street to my house.
  • Ha! Yeah, I definitely believe it is true.......except that my sons were stronger than I have ever been at 18-19 years old. Jerks
  • Well, nobody can really advise you on this. If it were me, I'd rather be safe than sorry on race day and I would buy the shoes. That said, a half marathon isn't that grueling a race if you are prepared, and I think they overstate how fast shoes break down. I suppose it all depends on how heavy a person is, how heavy-footed…
  • I agree with the suggestion of seeking professional advice. I would guess that you could get on an exercise bike and start with that. Many herniated disks heal. Your plantar fasciitis might improve if you rest it and lose weight. But, until you are better, you should be careful.
  • Caffeine is a performance enhancing drug. It is true. But there is more evidence that it is helpful in distance running than there is for sprinting. BUT, why mess around with potentially hazardous performance-enhancing drugs? Are you a professional? Are you going to get your picture on the front page of the newspaper if…
  • So there is this expert who thinks that, since all our searching for radio signals or artificial lights has revealed nothing, most civilizations destroy themselves shortly after they become technologically advanced. Otherwise we would have heard or seen something by now, right? Global warming anyone? Their fearless leaders…
  • Weights are good. But be sure you include explosiveness training, specifically, and things like box jumps, hill repeats. And then, practice sprinting. I would guess that is you are running a 30-second 200-meters that you can shave those five seconds with better technique. I'd be surprised if you couldn't.
  • What an accomplishment!
  • I deadlift and squat in socks, when the gym allows or I don't get caught. Course, I don't own lifting shoes.....Maybe if I did, I wouldn't do barefoot. But I like lifting without shoes.
  • I agree with everyone! Exercise is great. But cardio or weights? What do you like? Whatever one you can enjoy, and stick with, and dedicate yourself to, that'll be best. Many people get motivated to lose weight and they want to lose it all and they want to do so fast, so they set unreasonable goals. Do what you like. Ease…
  • I cannot say I was ever an avoider. But when I first started going to the gym, I went for the hot tub and steam room and sauna. The gym we went to, which was very typical for the day, had chrome dumbbells and weight machines and, maybe, two benches for bench pressing. We'd spend five minutes in the weight room and then…
  • Of course you can do it. Shoot, we all want to be fast. We all want to be strong. We all want to be agile and attractive. Many of us want to work hard and are not averse to suffering. I lift. I do Crossfit. I run. I play tennis and bike. I ski. I used to play soccer. But I would be foolish to think there aren't trade-offs…
  • Wait a second. I've been bumbling through my entire life without knowing this?
  • About that stretching before you get out of bed in the morning. Very important, it turns out. The plantar fascia does not heal very well during the day because it is always getting tweaked and torqued as you walk and run. So, the tears cannot mesh and start to mend. At night, they do, however. At night, the bridged and the…
  • I have had plantar fasciitis, off and on, for many many years. I used to play soccer. At one point, I decided I have finally had enough. I could not continue to hobble around for days every time after I ran. I had to see a doctor and seriously consider surgery. So, I got on the internet and googled: PF and surgery.…
  • I kind of think that is the point, though. No, you probably cannot be great at everything. But you can get a little better at everything. Yes, it will take you longer -- maybe much longer -- to get better at a bunch of different skills and strengths when you are trying to get better at all of them at once. But, what the…
