Here's an recent article in the journal Sports Medicine from an Australian researcher in which he says that, based on the evidence, his opinion is that resistance training can be detrimental to endurance training. Reason, he says, is that one recovers from a long run or bicycle ride in about 24 hours. But, it can takes…

Oh, boy. We have been through this before. I Crossfit. So, sure, I am well aware that in the 2016 Games Matt Frazier ran almost a six-minute-mile pace in winning the ~10k trail run event. He's an Olympic lifter by training. But all that says is that lifters can run and that guy is in incredible shape and he trains four…

No, You are going to find it really hard to get in the running mileage you need if you are trying to lift heavy three -- even just two -- times per week. You won't have enough time for recovery. You can try it for a couple of weeks if you want. I think you'll see. Those runs the day after you lift will be really hard,…

I was not excusing anything. I simply thought that there is this mistaken impression that this kind of behavior is about crude, irrepressible, male sexual impulses. In my experience, the average, normal male can control their sexual urges. What they don't control -- too often -- is their ego and their aggressive impulses,…

Sorry. I did not mean that at all. I was only referencing the last statement in the thread. I simply meant it is not about women being women. I meant it is about men being aggressive and being jerks. I only thought being honest about what I have perceived as a male might be helpful. But I'll stay out now.

This is so true. It is not about the attractiveness of women. I am a man. I have been in groups where someone has harassed a stranger on the street. It's about being macho. Being the alpha who will confront someone else. All the better if it is in front of your buddies. It's about showing that you have the guts to open…

This is really interesting. I suspect it might work......The men who do this kind of thing are bullies, after all.

I don't. But yoga means much to me. I began exploring yoga back when I was in college because a friend's mother practiced and she got us interested. In those days, there were no yoga studios. There were only books, usually with black-and-white pictures. Those pictures -- usually of men with turbans wrapped around their…

If I may say so, this advice seems a bit dated. Yes, coaches have moved from recommending that athletes do a bunch of static stretches before activity to recommending dynamic stretching before. And, yes, I believe much of this came about because some studies showed that static stretches left muscles weak afterwards. But I…

There are hundreds of "yoga for runners" videos on YouTube that will give you a 10-15 minute routine you can do post-run, or whenever.

Dunno. I used to do it when I overdid pull-ups. The thing that helped me the most was massaging it, and rest. I always took a break from pull-ups until it was better, cuz going back to the exercise always seemed to aggravate it again. Ice too. I might avoid ibuprofen or any other NSAID, if you can. A recent study showed…

This is not lifting, but......... My wife hired a running coach, a local runner who almost qualified for the Olympic marathon and who won her age group at Boston. It was distinctly unhelpful. The woman never ran with her, so she could never give her any meaningful, specific feedback. This woman just presented my wife with…

I don't know about breast lifts. But I do have a bit of expertise with cosmetic surgery, hence my interest here. As Alice said, look at as many photos of a surgeon's lifts as you can before choosing. And shop more than one surgeon. These procedures are pretty straightforward. But some guys/gals do have a better aesthetic…

I am in the Central Valley of California, where days in July and August have temperatures that climb above 100 degrees F quite regularly. We go early in the morning here.

I go to spin classes. I love it. The actual report that spurred these media articles described three cases of rhabdo and spin. Three cases? Out of how many people do spin and Soulcycle classes every single day? Sounds like something to be aware of. But not a huge problem.

Maybe if you want to do something more, do something gentle like yoga or a long walk.

Hey j, I live in Sac, in the Land Park area. I run and play tennis, and sometimes work out at a Crossfit gym with my two sons.

I really like the advice you are getting. 1) Do not increase your mileage by more than 10 percent per week to avoid injury. 2) If you want something more, find something else to do and cross train: Lift weights, or practice yoga, or swim, or bike, or take a spin class, or do Crossfit, or walk, or.......

This is known as "tennis calf" or "tennis leg" or "tennis players' calf." I suppose they called it that because it usually happens when one is sprinting, and it usually happens to someone over 30 years of age, and, back in the day, tennis players were the only people of advanced years who still ran. The calf is such a…

Also Sacto. I run and play tennis. Sometimes Crossfit and biking.

I had ACL surgery about four years ago and last year tore my meniscus. I have found with both rehabs that yoga is a great activity. Because my knee has been sore and swollen, and weak, when I have started rehab, it has been hard for me to jump, or even move, without discomfort. Forward lunges? Forget about it. But, yoga is…

Hey Charlene, I have two that I do, course they are outside runs and require a track. One is an intervals routine I got from Crossfit. It is a routine designed by Chris Hinshaw, a former Ironman competitor who is now training many of the top Crossfit people in their running. It is a series of 200 meter sprint intervals,…

I think that what got me going was the steam room and the jacuzzi. Back in the day, the majority of public gyms were these Charles Atlas-type places, with chrome weights and suntanning lights. They also had steam rooms and saunas, and jacuzzis and cold-plunge tubs, etc. They weren't too much about rigor. They were about…

Why couldn't she go, spend less, and have the learning experience for next time? Anyone?

Gaining muscle takes time. What's important is that you like what you are doing and that you want to do more. Many people start and exercise program and then they don't stick with it. There may be better programs you could do. There may be better exercises. But, if you like this and can stick with it, I would continue to…

Most strollers are pretty efficient once they get going. I doubt the difference in energy expenditure could even be calculated if you wanted.

I suspect that if you squat heavy, which will bring the best results, you won't be able to squat every day. My son did the Smolov, 12-week, squatting routine. It is absolutely brutal. It produced great results for him. But even that routine is only three-four days a week.

I am not sure if the truth has been specifically stated here yet: So I will do it. Yeah, running makes everyone hungrier and it is not uncommon for people who are training for a longer race -- even a marathon -- to actually put on weight. I like the suggestion of making sure you get enough fat and protein in your diet. It…

My son was never one for taking an arduous jog by himself. But he liked Crossfit for the social aspect at first, I think. It really is nice to have social interaction at the gym, and people are supportive. Plus, the slightly competitive aspect, and having a coach there urging you to work hard, is like having a personal…

Rowing is a great suggestion. The ergs that you row on record all kinds of different things when you row, which makes it easy to mark your progress and to challenge yourself, which keeps it interesting. Plus, it works a lot of major muscle groups.
