SL is a great beginner program. Your friend shouldn't be giving advice. A lot of personal trainers also say it isn't a good beginner program. I personally believe they have alterier motives. They don't get paid if you just use a free lifting program available on the internet.

Protein shakes aren't that expensive if you look at the total grams of protein you get for the cost. I buy a 5lb bag for $59 and it lasts a lot longer than $60 of chicken breasts.

I agree with theserpah - good socks are incredibly important. Merino wool is best in my opinion. Also pack a good sharp pocket knife. You will end up using it at some point.
