use plain yogurt instead of sour cream, especially in strong tasting dishes (like tacos). More calcium and less fat, and unlike fat-free sour cream, you can get it without stuff like modified cornstarch, etc. (Of course, you need to read labels.)

It's SO true! I have had "right size" and "fit" meals that were obviously crazy fatty or way too large a portion to be the calorie amount advertised. That being said, we came back from vacation recently, and I have to applaud those states and cities that now require calorie statements, and/or restaurants that just do it as…

The best choice is always something nutritious, instead of junk food. But once in awhile, allow yourself that ice cream cone!

I'm 5'1", but OLD!!! As a result, my goal weight is higher than it would have been years ago. (I already am struggling with saggy skin and I still have over 35 pounds to go!) My goal weight is 130 pounds. That puts me inside the "healthy" range on the BMI scale, and right now that would make me ecstatic!

Well, we are close the same age (I'm nearly 60), but at the opposite ends of the faith spectrum! Still, we have the same struggles. Congratulations on taking that first step. Just remember to be patient with yourself and to congratulate yourself for every positive thing you do--even the little ones. This takes time. I've…

I really, really, REALLY sympathize. I struggle with my sweet tooth as well! I can't say I've completely licked the problem, but I can truthfully say I'm in a much better place. Here is what I have done (for what it is worth): For about 2 months I didn't even allow myself sugar-free sweets, except for one diet soda in the…

You have never failed until you have given up! I know that sounds trite, but I was just looking at my own progress, which has been through some rough spots. It has taken me 2 1/2 years to lose the 76.6 pounds that I have lost. That's a long time, and there was one spot where I hovered around the same spot for a year, and…

Binge eating is not at all unusual. If I were to tell you about some of my binges, they would scare you silly. It probably IS related to stress, or boredom, or any number of emotions that you are trying to suppress. If you can, I strongly advise counseling. Without it I would not have lost the weight I have. And this…

I, too, am a great fan of the skechers. I think I'm a bit to old to start running (LOL), but I do love my Shape-ups. In fact, they are almost the only shoe I wear. Don't ask how many pairs I have--I'm embarrassed to admit--but I even wear them to work (I work on a college campus, so a lot of walking is in store on a normal…

Just read it--going to start trying it tonight. No clue, but I do know it is harder to move very slow, and I like the idea that it might keep injuries away. We'll see what it does! I'll post back later.

I did a 1/2 hour very brisk walk on my lunch hour, and tonight I hope to try a new strength-training program I just discovered in a book called "Power OF 10"--it's a very s-l-o-w---m-o-t-i-o-n workout, that is supposed to keep the injuries away, and (theoretically) whip you into shape fast, with 1 - 2 workouts per week.…

The best one is one you enjoy so that you will actually keep doing it!

Yeah, pasta can be a killer! And it goes down SO easy! The solution is to eat it seldom and sparingly. If it is really the bolognese sause you love, I have often eaten sauces that I love over vegetables. (Sure makes the vegies taste better!) For instance, there is something called spaghetti squash where after cooking the…

Bump! I'd like to hear reviews as well!

That's a new one on me. As a matter of fact, that was something I used to have happen when I was eating poorly--like way too much fat! Maybe someone else has some ideas?

Hi! Sorry that I'm not in your boat (much too old, thank you very much), but I was in your boat once, and I would like to offer just a few words of friendly advice (if you don't mind). 1. Don't try to lose too much too fast, especially if you are breastfeeding. 2. If you ARE breastfeeding, and if (like me) you increased…

MUCH better than sitting on the couch. I have a Kindle that fits nicely on my bike and I can read forever that way!

Oh yeah! I love salad with some protein in it--egg or cheese or chicken or salmon! Mmmmmmm. Invite me over!

I'm in! Maybe I can actually start to add a little running to my walk!

I RUN soon, I hope. Never have, hope to feel up to trying intervals this summer.

Well, just removing your shoes may explain the loss! Some athletic shoes weigh as much as a pound each. Other than that, I have taken "time off" from time to time, and I do discover that my gastrointestinal system works much more quickly (if you get my drift), but other than that I gain weight. What I don't know is what…

I, too, have done Weight Watchers (and probably every other diet on the planet). I am find that this works marvelously--as long as you "work the program." The calorie guidelines and exercise tracking are really helpful, as is the social networking support. As you can see, I've lost a lot, so I guess it really does work.

Yay! I'm finally out of the plus sizes!

Here's a weird one for you. I learned this from my counselor. And it works. Distraction. If you can do something that really engages you for awhile, you can forget about your cravings. Some things that have worked for me (though it is different for everyone) are practicing an instrument, exercising, doing craft projects.…

Glad you're back! Your title says it all: "Slight set back." Just remember how much further ahead you are than you were when you started this. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and sometimes you need to walk part of it just to finish. Keep on truckin'!

That's not at all unusual. Typically, those of us fighting our weight have some level of body dysmorphia--we can't really see ourselves as we are. Plus, we tend to be very hard on ourselves, and to think of this journey as "all or nothing." I know that lately I've had to remind myself that even though I'm at a plateau, I'm…

Okay, dear daughter--you've inspired me. Since I'm working at home today I put my laptop on the kitchen counter and I'm standing. Do I get to blame you if my back starts killing me?

Yay--no, people don't think. My son thought whole wheat crackers were cookies until he was 3. Then I went back to work evenings, and my next door neighbor watched him for ONE hour three times a week until my husband got home to make him dinner. Seriously, it was from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Nearly every day he came home…

I think you can, but someone yesterday posted an idea that I think sounds way better, at least for me. You can save your exercise calories from today to eat tomorrow! What a great way to reward work well done. For me, sometimes I plan to exercise as soon as I get home from work only to discover that something has happened…
