I used to do the Relaxation Response mediation for 20 minutes, twice a day. I need to start again...

Switch your percentages of fat and carbohydrate, and see if the weight doesn't come off more easily.

To be clear, CACAO is very healthy for you. CHOCOLATE is full of sugar, and usually other chemicals.

Personal best: 5:45. Current average: 7:30.

-Any carbohydrate that you eat, other than fiber, is sugar. Your body recognizes no difference between the carbohydrate obtained from organic whole-grain pasta, or a candy bar. -Reducing your carbohydrate intake and increasing your healthy fat intake (pastured meat and eggs, avacado, olives, coconut) will make it much…

Sprinting is not defined by how fast you run. It is defined by how fast you run in relation to your ability to run. If two people are running at the same pace, but person A can only sustain that pace for 10 seconds, while person B can sustain that pace for an hour, person A is sprinting and person B is not. True--you do…

By all means, begin at the beginning. I am looking forward to your alternate hypotheses on the long term conditioning effect on body composition produced by aerobic versus glycolitic metabolism. :)

Straw man much? Nobody was discussing "elite distance runners". A question was asked about the merits of "running", and I described two different modes of running. People who engage in both modes of running will see the effects of both modes of running. True. But weight loss and fat loss are not synonymous. Also true. But…

Or maybe you just need to adjust your macronutrient ratio. Are you eating lots of protein and fat, or are you getting your calories from sugar?

FWIW: There are too many flaws witht the simple "calorie-in/calorie-out" model for it to be effective. Beginning with the fact that our body does not utilize the chemical energy stored in food in the same way that it is released to determine it's "caloric content". Then you have endocrine response to macronutrients,…

That depends on what you mean by "best". The most accurate is hydrostatic weighing; but it's usually expensive and difficult to coordinate. Bioelectric impedance can be accurate, but is still fairly expensive and can be a bit finicky. Calipers are an excellent compromise between accuracy and expense, and are quite easy to…

Seventeen year military (eight in the Marine Corps, the rest in the Army National Guard; all as Military Police) and full-time correctional officer. Once (and hopefully again) concealed-carry and martial arts instructor. I have a repeating and progressive thirteen-week workout program which combines powerlifting,…

Define "skinny"? Your body will cannibalize muscle tissue to save its fat reserves. You can starve yourself down to almost a skeleton (assuming you could survive without the micronutrient input), and you will still have a pot-belly.

There are different types of running... If you are talking about long-distance running, then it may cause WEIGHT loss, but it actually isn't good for FAT loss, or for cardio. ---Why is it not good for fat loss? Because it is fueled by bodyfat. While this may sound ideal for fat loss, you are actually training your body to…

I'm starting on a mostly-machine regimen, so that weather isn't an excuse. I rotate through treadmill (keep it at 1.0 elevation) stair climber and elliptical trainer. I thought at first I would be slower running on real pavement, but I've actually dropped minutes off my run. Best wishes!

FWIW: The human body does not need carbohydrate intake, ever. There are Essential Fatty Acids, which means that we need fat in our diets. There are Essential Amino Acids, which means that we need protein in our diets. There are no "essential carbohydrates", because we are perfectly capable of manufacturing our own…

You are essentially correct--the chemical energy derived from food is chemical energy, but the different chemical properties of the macronutrients will cause differences in how the body processes that energy. However, the "calorie" measurement of food is, again, derived by a different mechanism than the body uses to get…

Nope. Avacado and peppers are both fruit. If it's going to grow into another plant (the avacado pit, the pepper seeds), it's not "vegetable". If it's the growing part of the plant itself (lettuce leaves, celery stalks), then it's vegetable. Vegetable matter tends to be very high in nutrients and fiber, and very low in…

It's actually very difficult to over-eat vegetables. However, fruits, seeds/nuts, grains and legumes do not count as "vegetables", and it is quite easy to over-eat on those (grains being the worst). Have some watercress and celery. :)

The less you weigh, the lower your BMR will be. The leaner you are, the higher your BMR will be as a function of your bodyweight.

People who think ketosis is dangerous are confusing it with ketoACIDosis. The first is the way your body is actually meant to be fueled; the second is a systemic breakdown associated with insulin disorder.

More physical activity, less processed food.

Have you given your heart a day off? Like any other muscle, it needs to recuperate.

The "calorie content" of food is determined by oxidation--that is, they set the food on fire in an underwater container and see how much it heats the water (actually, they usually just make estimates today). However, your body does not process foods by oxidation; it processes them through mechanical/chemical/enzymatic…

I think just gripping is probably the most effective forearm exercise. Try hanging a towel over a high bar, grabbing both ends with one hand, and take your feet off the ground.
