There's lots of talk about eating healthy when eating out, but some restaurants make it easier than others. When you say your family, I'm wondering if you mean you, your hubby and kids, or extended family. If it's the former, then, since you're the mom, you should be setting an example for healthy eating (which involves…

Some folks have a misunderstanding of what is included in the "carb" category, and think it is only bread/grain/cereal etc. Actually, anything that isn't meat/fish/poultry or fat/oil is a carbohydrate. And carbs (since that encapsulates the massive variety of fruit, veggies, grains and dairy) SHOULD make up the largest…

I'd say it depends on how much time you spend on logging your food. Do you feel compelled to take your salad apart, logging every slice of cucumber, radish and lettuce leaf? And do you jump up before the two of you have finished eating to do your food diary, or worse yet, do you sit at the computer while you are eating,…

Thanks to the many who took time to share your experiences. Only one or two out out of all maintainers (or those closing in on their goal) said they didn't consistently - or even daily - journal their food intake. I noticed a few common threads: one, that when a person stops keeping the diary, he or she was more prone to…

Wow, I wasn't thinking there'd be 100% consensus about tracking to get to goal, but it definitely shows the absolute tie-in between successful weight-loss and keeping that food diary! But what was more surprising was that almost all who responded still keep up with the discipline DAILY! I've been keeping up with mine, and…

For a light dessert, chop and add them to sugar-free french vanilla pudding (made with low-fat milk). Add some chunked-up vanilla wafers, and top with Cool Whip Lite!

I make old-fashioned oatmeal (3 day's worth at a time) with a Tbsp or two of chopped dates. Then I add a bit of Blue Bonnet Light, a good pinch of brown sugar, and low-fat milk...who needs dessert?!? Other days, it's whole-grain cereal and banana, or a scrambled egg with one whole egg and one egg white, and a side of whole…

Actually, I had a MacD's caramel sundae this evening, enjoying every super-sweet calorie, and still ended my day with 3 calories to spare:)

Lots of great ideas here! It seems those who are at or close to their goal have lots in common, basically, to eat a good variety of healthy foods, eat enough, to enjoy an occasional treat, and balance the wiser food choices with exercise!

I am at the goal weight I'm accepting for right now (at 5'2", I'm keeping my weight at 135-136). May try to go a bit lower, but during a recent First Place 4 Health session at our church, I lost 7 inches and 5 pounds and am gonna practice maintenance for a while. First Place is a biblically-based weight-loss program…

Hope you enjoyed that sandwich. As others have said, if you are hungry, eat! If we are truly hungry, and not just experiencing an emotion that makes us want to eat, then we need to put some food into our tummy, no matter the hour. Sometimes I'm having a bedtime snack at 9:30 p.m.. And please get that four-letter-word out…

Canned tuna, big container of old-fashioned oats, local or in-season produce, store-brand whole wheat bread, low-fat milk by the gallon, store-brand dried beans and brown rice, to name a few. When buying items priced by the pound, bunch or head, weigh them to get the most for your shopping dollar. Could be an extra carrot…

Good for you for eating lots of fruits and veggies! I'm wondering if your calorie quota is too low and your metabolism is beginning to stall. You might try staying between 1400-1500 to see how that does. I agree with the other poster about getting plenty of protein, but I'd say not to take in so much that you have to…

1500 calories sounds like a good amount if they are well-chosen among the food groups. I lead a First Place 4 Health group, and I see people cutting back or eliminating food groups to reduce their calories below what they should be getting, thinking they'll lose quicker that way. Doesn't work! The body needs a wide variety…

I buy the big container of old-fashioned oats and make 3 cups at a time (3 cups water and 1 1/2 cups dry oats). I add a bit of salt and about a tablespoon of chopped dates. Nuke it for three mins and you have a few servings, depending on how much you want to eat. This makes four breakfasts for me, with 1% milk, a small…
