I can tell you what works for me-when I first started out all I did was the elipical machine. I did high levels and 60 minutes or more at a time. I hear you, I am 35 and it is tougher at this stage to shed it then when we were younger. When you hit that level were you are not moving. Even the slightest change will have a extreme effect on you. The best key is not to do anything extreme, just the slightest change in routine will shock your body

The bad thing about fasting is that it is not healthy and in the end it is fad. You will lose sure but you will put it back on even quicker, remember your body it a machine. Healthy eating and exercise is the key. There is no quick fix, only hard work
