  • Thanks for the photo, I was imagining something like a banana omelette.
  • Your post made my heart feel very soft. About ten years ago I was much heavier than I am now. I always had a feeling my friends disapproved although no one ever said anything directly. One day I was out for a walk with a friend and had trouble keeping up. I think he actually sped up a little, and he didn't say a word. His…
  • Pull the leaves away from the kale stems and toss in a little olive oil and salt (maldon salt is great for crunch). Spread out in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast in a 350 degree over for twenty or thirty minutes, until crispy. Kale chips are a great snack and if you are a person who craves crunchy salty snacks…
  • Where I live community gardens are springing up, some even on city park land. People are raising more of their own produce, and also learning to do their own canning and preserving so it can last through the winter. Sorry to hear it's been so tough for you both. I've noticed a big difference myself in the last four years,…
  • Thanks for the heads up about skinnytaste, I'll check it out. Martha Stewart has a "light" cookbook that is excellent. I also use www.epicurious.com, which is fantastic. They have a great search function; you can enter whatever you have - chicken breasts, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, say - and it will list every recipe…
  • Get it fresh if you can. Shrimp is good if you coat it lightly in cornstarch with salt and pepper and saute quickly with shallots, garlic and jalapeno (if you like spice). Just cook until it turns pink, then it's done. It's really nice with some kind of vietnamese dipping sauce with rice vinegar and fish sauce and whatever…
  • Cooking is a lot more fun when you know a few basic techniques; it's a skill that can easily be learned. If you don't know some simple ways to make food taste good The Joy of Cooking is a good place to start, it explains everything from how to boil an egg to how to cook rice and vegetables to roasting a chicken and more…
  • I wonder about this as well, not just with fats but with carbs (simple vs comlex). I read a lot about healthy diets, but sometimes it seems like I have a lot of information and not much actual knowledge, and those days I start to think I need to be a scientist to figure out what makes a healthy diet. Ultimately, I try to…
  • Do you think this book would be appropriate for someone who just wants to get a little stronger, or is it aimed at bodybuilders?
  • As my alcoholic mom drank more she got thinner and thinner, but that was because she stopped eating unless she was with me or my sister. Most of her calories were coming from alcohol. For people who aren't alcoholics, I think drinking can be a different kind of minefield - a fattening minefield. If I have more than one…
  • This is really good: http://www.oprah.com/food/Baked-Lemon-and-Vanilla-Oatmeal-with-Strawberries-Recipe I also like oats as a topping on baked apples, with a little maple syrup and cinnamon. But I would be interested in knowing how oatmeal is a miracle food that will make you lean. Surely you can find something you like…
  • Hi, and welcome. I'm 55 and have found some excellent groups for people over 50 here. Also, feel free to add me as a friend. I hate walking on a treadmill as well but an ipod revolutionized my cardio experience - make sure you load it up with music you love. Regarding your struggle to lose weight, I sure sympathize.…
  • I'm in the same boat and used to hate cardio as well. First I would suggest spending some money on a really good bra. A sports bra probably isn't going to cut it. After a lot of experimenting I use the elliptical and go to spin class. Spin class is fantastic, it is so hard I get a huge endorphin rush from it and always…
  • Thanks for the welcome, DeeDee! I have a question inspired by my dinner tonight. I'm wondering about quantity vs calories. My plate was absolutely loaded down with vegetables, mashed cauliflower (weirdly yummy) and broccoli, and a couple of small lamb chops. And I started to wonder if that quantity of food is a good thing.…
  • Hi everyone, Just stumbled on this thread, so happy to find you as I was starting to feel awfully old (55) to participate in the other threads. It's amazing how our lives and concerns shift as we age. I love the Jack Russell photos - what a handsome boy! Goals for November are: Limit my sofa time with the laptop in my lap…
  • @sizzle9s, thanks for saying that. I'm 55 and never wanted children. I sometimes think not having children is the only good decision I have ever made. I like kids, I am very, very close to my niece (who is now 22), but believe I would not have been a good parent. Yet I have been told many times that my decision is selfish,…
  • I have a friend whose cat licked itself bald, and they gave him something to plug into the wall that released pheromones and made his cat calm again. Belly hair growing in. I cant' get plug in valium so the next best thing for me is spin class. It's the only exercise I've ever done that released endorphins in a way I found…
  • I had mine out in my twenties. It hurts, but pain fades with time and you'll get through it. I ate a lot of ice cream. For me it was absolutely worth it, I used to have constant sore throats that turned into colds that turned into bronchitis. I'm so much better off. Good luck!
  • Great attitude! You look like so much fun, like someone I would like a lot.
  • Thanks for the very interesting and helpful OP. I do have a general problem getting enough protein, if anyone has any helpful suggestions that would be great. Fiber seems to be my specialty, though! While I don't question for a minute that too few calories is dangerous, I do have a concern about a "one size fits all"…
  • A doctor put me on 800 calories when I was in university, at a time when I was about 10 lbs overweight. I blame him for slowing my metabolism to a near halt.
  • Mine is open to friends, happy to add anyone. I'm older than many people here (55) and menopause is creating a whole new struggle. I like to cook and try new things, I'm always trying to make something delicious that will keep me under my daily allotment.
  • I broke an ankle and had to have it surgically repaired four years ago, and it can still give me trouble. It can be hard to know what is causing pain; I had to go to 3 physiotherpists and 2 doctors before I found out I have tendinitis in that ankle. Have you considered starting with walking and seeing if that aggravates…
  • I find I don't snack in the evenings if I eat a good breakfast. By good breakfast I mean 400 + calories with some fat, some protein, some carbs and lots of fiber. It sets me up well for the day. Like others here, I feel a lot of concern for you. I've struggled with depression myself and know how hard it is, and how hard it…
  • A friend taught me this and it works every time. I trick myself into going to the gym. When I'm home thinking about how I don't want to go to the gym I tell myself "I'll just go and if I get there and don't want ot exercise I'll come home." So I get there and think "I'm here, I'll work out for ten minutes and then go home…
  • I've seen a lot of bashing of people over fifty in this thread. We don't automatically get dementia after a certain age. But we do acquire a little perspective and some of our self-imortance drops away. Hopefully. Surely everyone is entitled to access to the gym to work out the best way we can. If people are walking on…
  • This is a great post, you might find something helpful here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/PregosaurusRex/view/setting-yourself-up-to-fail-440582
  • This happened to me at the beginning when I set my caloires at 1200. I would have a few good days and then snap like a twig and eat food for no other reason than I wasn't supposed to. I wasn't hungry, and it didn't even taste good, but I couldn't stop. I've done much better since increasing my daily caloires to 1500. I've…
  • I really liked this because it made me think I could take small steps to be more active and it would be effective. Sometimes I think an hour or two at the gym is overwhelming and do nothing, but a half our walk is always doable. Thanks for posting this.
  • The thing i hate the most is when people don't wipe down the cardio machines after use. I may see this differently because it's such a pet peeve, but the worst offenders always seem to be the people who sweat the most. Mostly, though, I'm inspired at the gym. I expect many of the posters here would consider me to be one of…
