  • Hi! I lost about 35# and have kept most of it off (I go up and down by 4 lbs) for a year. My "tricks" are 1. Logging (in past lost this much, then did not log and regained it all and more, at least 3 times.) 2. Keeping a few old photos on my desktop- not going there again 3. Not thinking "endless diet"- this is just the…
  • Montréal! After many decades in Toronto.
  • Hi from Montréal; lost 35# on MFP... and in the world capitol of poutine!
  • Hi newcomers! I'm 65. Joined in summer of 2012. Lost 32ish, slowly. MFP has been a terrific help, I could not do it alone. Don't ever give up, and log every day even if you are not under your cals.
  • I too have read every reply; so much great advice, straight talk and caring from people who have never even met you! They know you can do this, and so do I. Keep your own food in the fridge, even if you have to put it in its own box. You can't eat calorie-dense, nutrient-poor food and feel well while you lose. Hoping you…
  • You've got a lot of good ideas here! How about finding a way to study that allows you to move? If your school has a gym, prop your book on a treadmill and walk while you read. It's more work but- you can also record your study notes, d/load to your iPod and walk outdoors. Even a 30-min exercise break will make a…
  • Mine's open to friends for only one reason: more eyes on me keeps me more accountable for both my food choices and logging every day. (But I don't expect my friends to read it!) Whether a friend's diary is open is irrelevant to me. The ticker tells the story.
  • It's not just the weight you can reach, it's the weight you can maintain. Personally, I find the "Overweight" BMI label motivating. Was determined to get mine to the Healthy range. Unless you are remakably muscly, BMI is a useful measurement system. For years I tried to weasel out of its accuracy, saying things like, "But,…
  • Another one raises hand: carbs, some desserts, martinis. Do avoid processed and fast foods but am not averse to a pint and a bag of chips after big workout. My family and friends hardly realize I'm eating to lose. I just eat to my allowed cals and log absolutely everything.
  • Like so many of you, I dislike the whole mindset of "cheat days" or "cheating". But I know what you mean: eating and ignoring it, as if what you don't log didn't happen. As someone who lost, then regained all and more, that's exactly why I'm on MFP and keep logging even at goal. Some days I end up (b/c of workout) with…
  • I am the daughter and sister of MDs. My dad always said, "No one should lose their home over medical bills"- and that was 50 years ago. For the past 42 years, I have lived in Canada, with its universal health care. It works, not perfectly, but well enough that I and my family are extremely skeptical of any argument against…
  • Began MFP b/c had high blood pressure, and was smack in middle of BMI Overweight range. I thought, "I can go either way: up to Obese category or down to Healthy Weight". My BP is now normal, without drugs. I have more energy, sleep better and will admit here, look freakin' awesome. Oh, and turn 65 next month.
  • You don't say how much you are drinking, but if you're consuming hundreds of calories more, yes, it will show and set you back. I haven't read every comment, but think you already know "the answer". I cut back and the first 2-3 weeks were less than fun but now it's OK. Check out the alcohol consumption guidelines for your…
  • Wow, terrific results! I've so enjoyed dropping sizes but it's been tough on my bank account, what with new things and alterations, Still, who would want to go back? Good for you!
  • That's a significant loss; congratulations! Keep going! No one can really motivate anyone else, just offer support. I've deeply appreciated others' support and have learned what i must do- take responsibility. It's been a most useful extra benefit of MFP, to learn to take control myself.
  • That's why we weigh in once a week, the daily fluctuations can sink you! (And occasionally the weekly ones, but they are fewer.) Also, if you are at family's take your measuring cups. The ye of a generous host is not always accurate and if you 'measure' mentally, it's a recipe for disaster. (Sorry, couldn't help myself.)
  • It's great to donate good clothes that no longer fit and also to remove any thought of ever needing them again. I've read that the average American woman is a 14 (or in some articles, they say it's 12). There is no shame in any size IF you are at a healthy weight, and I use BMI to define that for me.
  • If there was a MFP sidewalk you would have a star. Not only is the loss impressive, you're moving through life with so much more ease. Congratulations!
  • That would be too long for me but might work for you. I've lost and regained for decades. If I had a month b/t weighing, I'd figure I could slide and then "pull my socks up" the last week or so- except habits are not formed that way. It's day in, day out. I weigh once a week or occasionally every 2 weeks; don't have a…
  • This is not as simple as it looks. One on hand, you have a compliment, but on the other, you hear the unspoken "But". I would like to have the presence of mind, (in the moment, not when I got home), to say what I really feel: "Thanks for the compliment. I'm gonna get the rest of me that gorgeous, that's why I'm here. How…
  • Been here 6 mos, almost at my goal. Figure I will never stop logging b/c in past, have gained and lost the same 25 lbs for decades. And guess what I did not do: eat to my caloric requirements and log it. It's not morality, it's math.
  • This is a fantastic and expensive example, the Burberry flared canvas skirt (price, $995):friends and I just left whoever they are thank on the Feedback page. I spent hundreds with WW, several times. Yes, WW was a good experience, but- this is as good and free.
  • Besdies all these great ideas, I've discovered Kusmi Tea's "Euphoria", which is a tea (actually maté) flavoured with orange and chocolate. Zero cals and marvelous. You can order it from Amazon.
  • That ticker is moving; you are on the path. Whether someone lis losing 5, 50, 150 we all need to make the same decision every day.
  • I'm "allowed" 1450, but keep it at 1400 with a few (OK very few) lower days. But I am a tall woman who is quite active. I've lost a more or less consistent pound a week and am delighted with MFP, not that it isn't work.
  • I'm almost 65, ,and had gained and lost the same 25 lbs for decades, so thought I "could not lose". Baloney! It's just a matter of setting your number and then eating to that- and of course logging. I'd wish you good luck but luck has nothing to do with it. It's a matter of behaving in a way that gets you the results you…
  • I'll be in maintenance mode soon, and... have been there before, but not with MFP. The same 15-20 lbs of "suitcase weight" I've gained and lost for over 20 years. Maintenance is not as much "fun" as losing, b/c you don't get that thrill of seeing your ticker move or dropping a size. With MFP I feel like I finally have the…
  • I would rather use facts than my own impressions, dreams or ideal images. So I apply accurate, unbiased measures to the ongoing project of maintaining a healthy weight: the scale, the tape measure or a photo taken every month or so in the same clothes, same mirror. (Though I can see that for a more significant weight loss…
  • I'm 64, ad I've seen a lot more acceptance of size diversity than when I was a teen growing up in the Midwestern US. This acceptance is not found among all people, but it's there far more often than 50 years ago. And I admit, not in advertising, except for exceptions like the Dove ad. I have a friend who is very…
  • You have posed a difficult question, and there is no easy answer. I have sometimes felt blue at Christmas, but it lifted after menopause. But, want to offer a few thoughts: 1. It's a made-up holiday. Even Christians agree that the actual event it celebrates most likely did not happen on Dec. 25 2. it is now mostly a…
