Your attitude to exercise sounds much like mine initially. I got a Fitbit because it gamified things for me. The corny badges work. Also, I have a treadmill in the living room, which I almost never used, because I always felt I had to do a certain number of minutes to get any effect--which was silly, because I spend a lot…

If that were true, then the introduction of all of the low-fat and non-fat processed food options over the past decade would not have coincided with the growth of obesity rates. Fat is an efficient storage of energy--9 kcal per gram, while carbs and protein are 4. The body needs dietary fat to access fat-soluble vitamins…

My husband was that way...I realized that my own health had to be a priority and I needed a variety of nutritionally dense veggies in my diet. So I would cook/prepare what i wanted and if he didn't like it and wanted something else, well, he's a grown man and knows where the fridge, stove and microwave are. He finally…

And don't be dejected about not consistently losing with big numbers...it's not always a linear process! I plateaued for about six weeks at one point, and finally took my measurements and realized that I'd lost 5 3/4 inches from my waist. Just focus on your health, one little choice at a time, and trust the math. You will…

Think of this as a lifestyle change to improve your health. Make accurately tracking every bite that you eat your first priority. Get a scale to weigh your food and enter everything, no matter what sort of decisions you make in a day around eating. I found that making small goals--eating five servings of fruits and veggies…

Are you eating the lettuce 'dry'? You might consider adding salad dressings--you can make your own with lemon juice and olive oil and herbs/spices you like...or a purchased one. When I started this, I switched from low cal or no-fat dressings to full fat ones and used less. Adding a few nuts and/or seeds, some avocado,…

I sample only the items that I could not replicate at home if i wanted to--that usually narrows it down to a couple of very special things...and if I taste and they are not worth the calories, I don't finish them.

When you see documentary footage shot in the fifties and sixties, people look skinny. The two things I noticed immediately when looking at 'mission control' footage for example--not a woman in sight and skinny men wearing ties.

I hope this doesn't sound facetious, but you should go to school for something you love so that you won't be bored in school or for the rest of your working life. If you decide to take this app seriously, then get a kitchen scale so you can be accurate in measuring your food. That was the first and best piece of advice I…

My goal for July is 100 miles.

If this were happening in my household, I would make sure my husband was playing an active role in communicating our wishes to the MIL, too.

When I quit 19 years ago, every time I craved a cigarette, I had a glass of ice cold water, did a couple of jumping jacks (I had heard that getting your heart beating a bit faster replicated some of the effects of a cigarette) and then walked around the block. Usually the craving doesn't last long if you can just get your…

For me, it was way easier to cut back on portion sizes and go for nutritional-value-per-calorie than to exercise. I bet I lost five pounds just from cutting out the daily cream in my coffee. It was easier to adjust something I did daily (meals) than to add a new activity into my day. I've been adjusting that as I go…

The 'moral compass' of any business is profit. I try to keep the wallet closed and cook from scratch whenever possible--it's creative, it's far less expensive, I can control my own nutrition-per-penny and my blue box is less full from all the overpackaging. If there weren't so damn many deer walking my town I'd put my…

When I started in August, I decided that cream in my coffee wasn't worth the calories. Then I did my best to eat as many veggies as I could for breakfast--for a few months, about five out of seven days a week I was eating a two egg frittata with onion, garlic, tomato, zuchinni, red, green, orange bell peppers, spinach,…

When you lost the weight before, did it come back? Or are you starting from that point forward? If it did come back, then maybe this time you are being more effective with healthy lifestyle changes with a slow loss instead of a rapid weight loss that isn't maintained. Trust the math--if you are at a deficit with calories…

Because a company profits by selling its product and has spent a lot of time and money researching how to get us to buy and eat it! Sometimes it's about 'perceived exertion'--if you are tired from a long day's work, home cooking feels like a big effort. When I step back and look at the 'convenience' of take-out or frozen…

Family birthday party so going all out with a grilled hamburger with lettuce, tomato and cheddar and a spinach and strawberry salad with slivered almonds and goat cheese in a raspberry vinaigrette. The sister in law is bringing some sort of frozen dessert...will have a sliver to be polite if it isn't worth the calories and…
