Many of us -- myself included -- are actually sleep deprived. When you're sleep deprived, specialized alarm clocks don't matter, and to a certain extent 'will power' doesn't either. The surest solution to getting up early is a decent night's sleep: when you're well-rested you'll get up more easily. I'm a lifetime…

Overall, I'm eating less. Also, the proportion of protein has gone way up and the proportion of grains has gone way down. More meat, yogurt, less wheat and rice.

I've got a year of pretty good success using MFP -- feel free to add me!

I've been running minimalist for a while now as well. My current rotation includes Altra Adams, some Kigos, SoftStar Dashes, and NB Minimus. I also keep a couple pair of more 'traditional' padded shoes around. I love running with minimal (read: no real padding, and just enough material to protect my feet from sharp gravel)…

Take a look at Surly's Cross-check. I set up a girlfriend of mine on one (she is 5'1"). If you put on a set of riser handlebars instead of the race-type bars, you'll have a pretty good setup. It's not cheap -- expect to spend around $1200. Other brands I'm familiar with (Trek, Giant) don't fit folks under 5' very well.…

Thanks for all the kind words guys! It's wonderful to have all the hard work paying off. If I can do it, anyone can! Best of luck to y'all!

That's a great one!

As soon as my foot heals, I'll be right there with you -- it's one of my plans as well. But in the meantime, I'll be focusing on the cycling and then the swimming. Which plan did you pick?

ladymiseryali : Ha! that was awesome! I've had a number of hairy, active partners in my time. Not. A. Big. Deal. Grownups have hair, sweat, the occasional stink, and bits of their bodies that can get gnarly with use.

One of the reasons I always carry a small roll in my pack -- works like a charm. When I was rollerblading semi-competitively, I would wrap my ankles for extra support at times. Awesome stuff!

I'm in, too! Sounds like a great goal!

Heh: I hear it worked great for the Romans....

The exercise you're inclined to do often is probably the one to go with for a while, using the maxim that "any is better than none." You'll eventually want some variety after a while though to mix it up. Swimming, x-country skiing, and bicycle riding are right up there and cycling has the advantage of being something one…

"You should feel happy..." (actually, about 95% of sentences with 'should' in it) Just: as in, "Just lose weight [it's simple for me!]", "Just stop doing that!"

Awesome question! (I use this with kiddos *and* adults in therapy all the time :) ) Here's a selection of what I wanted to be: As a little kid: Garbage man (seriously, I still think garbage trucks are super-cool!) Scuba diver Astronaut As a bigger kid: Professional soccer player Astronaut Microbiologist Helicopter pilot…

CJ -- You'll see a lot of folks on here talk about 'starvation mode' and how going below 1200 kcal a day will put you at risk of that. The research I've seen indicates that going below 1200/day can be done without engaging starvation mode. In more extreme cases, it seems, a radical reduction in intake combined with low…

Alright -- I'm definitely in the age range, and I've had some great compliments recently. I have a feeling that I'll have some trouble believing it for a while (15 more pounds, maybe?). Heh.

I wrench professionally on both Trek and Giant -- and both can be quality bikes. Like most brands, they have models which vary from pretty inexpensive to as much as you want to spend. Here's a decent one that I've had some good experience with: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/town/fitness/fx/7_3_fx_wsd/ Of course it…

I'm with Coach on this one. Your physical and mental health are closely related. Dunno what your med history is like. At a guess, you've been through a bunch. I hear the frustration. At the very least, would you talk to a doctor about available options? Misery sucks!

I'm right at 202 or so, and lookin' to get back to around 165 or so if possible. Would really like to have additional friends on here to help support me through tough patches!

I've been going minimalist for a bit over a year now (no more shinsplints!). Haven't tried the Vibrams, but I've had good success with Kigos, Altra Adams, and Soft Star RunAmoc Dashes. If your foot has an odd profile (as mine does), you'll want to try before you buy. Good luck!

Nerd/geek here as well. Long-time sysadmin (AIX/BSD/GNU-Linux, etc.), know the heck out of my Silmarillion content, big into sci-fi. Looks like we're pretty well represented here! Also -- been on here for a week and need to do the obligatory: Hello world
