  • As others have said portion control is vital with nuts, a single almond is about 7 calories, and a single cashew is about 9. I have a daily snack of 7 almonds, and 7 cashews, a total of 110 calories. Of course if I ate one less cashew it would be a nice round figure of 100 calories.
  • I used the Dukan diet successfully and I recommend it. It's similar to Atkins but promotes low fat as well as low carb. Rather than counting carbs there is a list of allowed foods for each stage, this makes it fairly easy to follow. Now I don't follow any specific diet, I have a routine of meals that I eat, based on what I…
  • I did 1200 calories for several weeks, maybe a month. Some days were lower than that, others a bit over. I found I regularly stalled and needed various ways to kick my body back into weight loss. But 1400 to 1500 was much easier and I felt much better doing that.
  • I agree with Steve, that's 18 sets of compound exercises which is already a pretty serious workout but if you are going to only lift twice a week then I don't see any point in splitting it. Deadlifts and squats hit many of the same muscles and in my opinion doing them together is not really practical in this type of…
  • 10lb is the muscle gain you'd hope for if you were a young man working out seriously for a year.
  • Harley, that's the guy. Not one of the smartest guys in class.
  • I've watched some of her videos and read her blog and there's another Australian, a guy, who is very similar. They don't eat just bananas but other fruit as well. I can't see how this can possibly be healthy. People that juice or cleanse on fruit often have a very healthy glow to their skin and they have a lot of energy…
  • Cocoa powder is fairly low calorie, 25 calorie for two tablespoons, you can add that to things you like, eg a milkshake with low fat milk, yoghurt etc. Note that a lot of cocoa powder has additives, I'm talking about pure cocoa powder. I recently realised how easy it is to make chocolate syrup, just water, cocoa and sugar…
  • No, I don't mean outlier. An outlier is is one observation out of a sample with many members. Perhaps the term "magic sample of one" is easier to understand. Again, I didn't say "injury". Damage is not just injury from accidents or bad form. The lower ability to heal after injury is a serious concern, but more important is…
  • To all the people that have used the word "toxins", what are "toxins"?
  • I didn't say "throw's someone's back". Get back to me if you're still lifting at my age.
  • This is known in statistics as "the magic single sample". The great thing about the magic single sample is you can find one to prove anything. Science on the other hand collects samples of data. And of course you have no idea what damage has been done or might be done to your back.
  • My post was poorly written but I didn't say don't lift weights, I explicitly mentioned squats, deadlifts, and military press as being dangerous especially starting these exercises over 40. These three exercises put a lot of strain on the back and shoulders (not squats), especially if form is wrong and the potential for…
  • context? who said so?
  • OddballExtrem, I'm a white guy who has lived in Japan for the last 14 years, I understand your situation exactly. One of the reasons I like living in Japan is that people have a clear understanding about commenting on personal matters. Back home people are always sticking their nose into other peoples business and trying…
  • I've been on what is pretty a Paleo diet for the last 12 months, not by design but by following my own principles. I don't agree with many of the claims made but I've come out with a similar outcome. Many proponents of the Paleo diet claim that grains and other foods are bad for us, even poisonous. I don't agree with that…
  • The only thing I'll add is that many of these detoxes are not just a waste but are in fact detrimental to your health. Going more than a few days with out normal levels of protein input will cause muscle loss and tissue damage.
  • A lot of the exercises above are not appropriate. Anyone over 40yr needs to be careful about back and shoulders. You should not be doing exercises such as squats, deadlifts and military press, especially if you don't have a history of doing these exercises.
