Basic rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein per pound give or take. I'm 189 I have about 170 grams of protein per day and I'm down 40lbs. The interesting thing about high protein foods is that they tend to have less calories and carbs (again a bit of generalization). Combine that with the fact that protein makes you feel…

Safe rule of thumb is 1 gram of protein for every pound you weigh. Unless you have a health issue it does seem strange that your trainer would tell you to eat less because most people really don't get enough. Here is a fairly balanced article on protein consumption - http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/maki1.htm

During my first week of working out with intensity my body was incredibly sore. The muscles in my legs for instance ached so bad that I couldn't sleep at night. I was so sore I literally thought I was injured and needed to go to the hospital. On top of that I also suffered from searing headaches during my workouts that…

Abs are made in the kitchen.

I don't recall anyone saying that it magically makes you lose weight... I think people are saying (including me) that it's an important part of your diet that shouldn't be ignored.

From what I can see I agree that you need to up your protein intake. "Up it to 1g/lb of lean body mass" is a good baseline. You can do this by supplementing with a protein shake (there are tons of tasty ones out there) or by focusing in on high protein foods. That great thing about high protein foods is that they tend to…

If you under eat your body's metabolism slows down and won't burn as many calories - 1500 sounds about right. Combine that with regular training and you should see some progress. But it takes time. I've lost 43 lbs but I've done that over 16 months! You absolutely need to be weighing and measuring your food with a weigh…

MFP's burned calorie numbers are waaaay out of whack - so much so that I don't enter my exercise in anymore.

Agreed. Try as hard as you can to stay away from carbs in the AM.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I use just regular old dumbbells for everything I do. It's not so much about the equipment you have but how you use it and the type of exercises you do. I've lost a little over 40 lbs over the past year doing a combination of body weight exercises along with dumbbells. I did purchase a…

A couple of people have already pointed this out but doesn't seem to have taken affect. It doesn't matter if you eat before or after. Do what works. When it comes to weight loss it's the old "80/20 rule" 80% of your weight loss success comes from the fact that you're eating properly. Not working out.

Thanks for sharing your story! I'm similar to you... demanding job, busy family and lots going on. I used all the same excuses as you did and finally last year in December at 227lbs decided enough was enough. I hired a trainer and 3 weeks ago crossed the 200lb threshold. As of today I'm at 195 with a goal much lower (165 -…
