There are others on MFP who are far more knowledgeable than I am about it but a fair bit of research has shown that the insulin response to artificial sweeteners is surprisingly similar to that of sugar. Since exaggerated insulin response is part of the obesity picture (and leads to insulin resistance, which, in turn leads…

Chocolate cravings are often a result of magnesium deficiency (about 60% of the population reportedly is deficient in magnesium). Chocolate is rich in magnesium but it is best to get the darkest you can find as the milk solids in milk chocolate block the uptake of beneficial polyphenols as well as magnesium up take. Dark…

The trend among pediatricians now is to tell parents of chubby youngsters to completely cut out sugary foods except for rare special occasions and to even cut out fruit juice--only water or whole milk for beverages. This has been pretty successful in most cases. One young mom that I know has followed this advice and both…

I respectfully disagree. I am living proof that it IS possible to cut added sugar completely out of my diet and I am much healthier for it (and it has been over three years). It has been the right way for me and it is the right way for everyone who has leptin resistance (which precedes and predicts insulin resistance, if…

NO. Fermentation takes several days--if the fruit is moving so slowly through the digestive canal, that it ferments along the way, that person would have a problem that was much larger than what he/she was eating. Having said that, there could be issues with fruit if you have a problem with fructose. However, the amount of…

Has anyone tried a Polar Loop? I'm thinking of getting one and wondered if anyone had any experience with it?

I see what you did.

And there is a reason why there are no examples of a 100% plant-based culture. If there ever were any, they likely became extinct long ago. Look, no one but ghouls love the suffering of animals and I believe that all animals should be treated humanely and with the respect that is due to all of life. But it is a romantic…

And even Hindus eat dairy and fish. The "sacred cows" of India are milked for the life-sustaining protein that they give. A classic study was done by scientists who concluded that it makes a great deal of sense to keep the cows alive than it would to slaughter them for a short period of meat for the people.

Okay--you first since you're so keen.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread--but here goes my bit of foolishness anyway. 1) We couldn't possibly even begin to cover the protein needs of the human inhabitants of this planet with a "plant-based" diet for everyone. Are you willing to see a great increase in the number of children with the swollen bellies of…

Hyponatremia (also called "water intoxication") is caused by excessive water intake. Others here have mentioned the loss of electrolytes that can occur--leading to very serious illness. It is worthwhile to try to increase fluid intake as it helps to flush out metabolic waste. But the "dose makes the poison" and too much…

I think it can. In my case, I made good nutrition (hyper-nutrition, really) be the most important part of my plan and I lost weight slowly (it has taken three years to lose the 66 pounds). Those who haven't seen me in a while proclaim that I look about 20 years younger than my age. But often those who pay little attention…

Well, my...how pleasant of you.

I have asthma too and essential plant oils don't bother me--it is the chemicals that they put in conventional perfumes that do. But, part of the problem of scent is that many women don't follow the rule that my grandmama taught me about perfume: "You don't want to smell like a floozie--your perfume should always be subtle…

Yup--it could easily be GERD too. (Hope, for your sake, that it is that as it is a much easier fix.)

I didn't have stones but when they did a cholecystogram with cholecystokinin, they discovered that my gall bladder was not emptying. When I continued to have nausea, pain and several bouts of fever and severe vomiting, they decided to remove it. Turns out that the duct from my gall bladder to the duodenum was kinked and…

We are in Muskoka and we have heavy snow warnings here in the Huntsville area, but blizzard conditions south of us. It is currently -19 C here as well--and no wind to speak of at present. It is weird though--Bracebridge isn't that far south of us and they are getting high winds and much colder temps right now. Strange.

Actually, sleep deprivation can lead to obesity in children so it stands to reason that it can affect weight loss in adults. Sleep deprivation raises stress hormones in the body (cortisol is the major one) and that certainly can affect calorie burn. The hormones of obesity are complicated but lack of sleep will not help…

Peanut butter and celery is my go to snack. But any kind of nuts or cheese are good snacks.

I have personal sad experience with the stupidity of the "low-fat" craze. My brother was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about fifteen years ago. He was paunchy, at the time--but had no fat anywhere else. His dopey doc said that losing the paunch would make his diabetes go away and put him on a very low fat diet. He lost…

Not sure what happened here--but anyway--there it is.

^^THIS^^ I know a number of women (including myself) who ended up with thyroid problems post-pregnancy.

None of the lower carb /low carb people I know overeat calories (most of them track calories as well). They may go crazy with meat and fat for the first week or two but then it tapers off to approximately TDEE-20%. That's one of the main benefits of lower carb eating--it controls appetite.

"Steve": "...For well over a century, we have been deciphering Egyptian Hieroglyphics from a civilization that lasted for 10,000 years. Archeologists have not found one writing remotely close to "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!!!"..." And yet, some of those same archeologists studied mummified corpses and…

Dark, high cocoa solids (85% or more), chocolate is actually a very healthy food. It is one of the few foods that actually help your body to repair its DNA. Just make sure you don't eat more than 40 grams a day, and DON"T eat it within an hour of any kind of dairy or calcium supplement as the calcium blocks the uptake of…

Tiger'sword: "...Your body never runs on pure stored fat. It's always a ratio of adipose fat, lean muscle protein, dietary protein, dietary fat, glucose, ketone bodies, and glycogen. Anyone that claims otherwise is flat out wrong. The ratios change based on activity, and when you eat, the ratio swings quite heavily toward…

No--our bodies can easily flip to burning body fat for energy. If not, the human race would have become extinct long ago.

^^This^^^ Good job. One major problem that many obese women have is that they are leptin-resistant. Leptin resistance precedes and predicts insulin resistance, if no intervention is taken. (It should be understood that body fat is NOT metabolically inactive--it doesn't just sit there--it puts out the hormone, leptin). You…
