http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/70/15/6368.long There would obviously be some protective effects from fruit-eating over eating nutrient-poor food. As an example, strawberries contain a polyphenol called ellagic acid which inhibits angiogenesis. As such, it would fight metastasis. There is also the fact that not…

No--but then there is the problem of the link between high fructose consumption and pancreatic cancer. Steve Jobs was a fruitarian for many years--apples were his favorite fruit. He even named his company after them. :-) Researchers have already warned about the connection between high fructose consumption and pancreatic…

Compared to what? If you eat the skins that brings the glycemic value down and if you add fat, that brings it down further. While it is true that they wouldn't have as much resistant starch as beans or the same kind, it is better to eat a potato than a handful of Oreos. :-)

Pretty technical information from someone who is just a casual participant in these forums. There are internet people who are "internet persuaders" who work for various corporations (food processors, for example) and collect money for each post. While, it seems that food processors would be likely to follow what you have…

Well, perhaps if this was a formal debate forum (which it is not) your claim would stand, but since it is an informal discussion forum, it does not. It is just a bit of triumphalism.

You are the one making the assertion that the information I presented was "false". Prove your assertion, by presenting contradictory information, please. Otherwise, you might want to keep your "counsel" to yourself as it will be ignored by most intelligent people.

Prove it.

[quote="MKEgal;35065120" "Well, actually... Fat releases leptin, which is supposed to be an appetite suppressant. But just as obese people can develop insulin resistance, they can develop leptin resistance. So even though there's a LOT of leptin running around (because they have a lot of fat making it), it doesn't work as…

Potatoes have fiber and "resistant starch" which makes them slower to digest. Add a bit of butter and/or sour cream and you slow the digestion further (as you have noted). Potatoes are actually a pretty good bang for your calorie buck as long as you don't fry them. The high temperatures of frying denature many frying oils…

Ultimately, it is "calories in-calories out" but there are a great many things that influence both sides of the equation. Fiber in a carbohydrate food lowers its effective "calories-in" because, while they measure calories in a lab, by burning it in a bomb-calorimeter, it doesn't take into account that fiber burns but it…

Diets composed mostly or entirely of fruit are dangerous and associated with pancreatic cancer--too much fructose. Steve Jobs was a fruitarian for many years--named his company after his favorite fruit, Apple Inc.---and died of pancreatic cancer. Drinking lots of soda pop is also associated with pancreatic cancer--again,…

That having been said, vitamins are vastly safer than pharmaceuticals. I wouldn't worry about getting too many vitamins in food, as they are better absorbed and utilized than a supplemental form because of the co-factors involved. To use Vitamin C for an example again, the co-factors of rutin and hesperidin, which one gets…

Yes, taking mega-doses of even water soluble vitamins can be a problem. Mega-doses of Vitamin C, for example can cause one to become "habituated" and when it is stopped, can result in a "rebound scurvy" (scurvy is a disease caused by a Vitamin C deficiency).

What does your endocrinologist say? What does your TSH look like? Your endocrinologist may be unaware that they lowered the TSH threshold--which may mean that you need to be supplied at a higher level. You should join the thyroid group here. [Edited by MFP Mods]

However, oats can be contaminated with gluten when they mill the oats on machines that have milled wheat, barley or rye. Bob's Red Mill has dedicated oats-only milling machines.
-
Oats don't contain gluten.

Do you go to an endocrinologist? Your TSH is WAAAY too high---keep going like that and you will burn out your adrenals. TSH should be 2.5 or less (new numbers). If you are still showing hypothyroid symptoms (and it sounds like you are) you should be seeing an expert--not your family doc. Do you take your morning temp? Are…

^^^^This.^^^^ There is nothing wrong with taking pleasure in your food, but food obsession is another matter. We live in an age of entertainment. For the most part, our ancestors were too busy to be concerned with entertainment. Only the idle rich had the time to pursue entertainment. King Henry VIII is the example of…

I hate Nutella--It tastes like dirty gym socks dipped in chocolate. Can't stand hazelnut flavoring. *Gagging* A sincere waste of chocolate. Feel the same way about Reese's Peanut Butter Cups--a waste of chocolate.

^^^This^^^...The body, in its "wisdom" will, when the calories are too low, shuttle the available calories to essential tasks. Maintaining muscle mass is a "luxury" in the situation where there is little food forthcoming. In addition, skeletal muscle burns far more calories than other types of tissue in the body, so it…

Green tea extract can be particularly dangerous to the liver. Green tea is usually okay to drink, but I would avoid the extract.

In the past, they were relatively harmless--didn't work, but were reasonably safe. Now, because many of them are sourced from China or other countries, where manufacturing standards can be somewhat to very "lax", they could be downright dangerous. Some have been tested and a fairly large percentage should have been…

p.s. It is important that you never take Epsom salts orally.
-
You can try Epsom salts baths. Epsom salts are magnesium chloride crystals and, if you are deficient in magnesium (many migraine sufferers are) you will absorb the magnesium chloride through your skin. You get the water as hot as you can stand it and add about two cups of Epsom salts (available at most pharmacies and also…

I would stay away from "cleanses" as they can be dangerous--especially to the baby. There could be lots of things going on, but I'm betting on a yeast overgrowth in the gut due to the high levels of estrogen from pregnancy and breastfeeding (estrogen, as nearly every woman knows, encourages the growth of yeast in the…

Yes--they do cause weight gain. They cause a chronic boost in blood glucose levels, which leads to hyperinsulinemia and weight gain as well as setting you up for Type II diabetes. The longer you stay on them, the higher the risk of Type II. I know a young woman who was severely depressed and suicidal after having been…

Been plagued with bad knees for many years--I've had to learn, by experimentation, what works (but it may not work for everyone). Four things that a number of people have reported and which seem to work for me: 1) You want to make sure that your leg muscles (and your core muscles as well) are in balance. I do the machine…

I re-sent it.

I'm sorry you think so. It was never my intention to be "provocative"--only to be honest.
