There's plenty of debate on the calorie thing. I really focus on the macro percentages, but I kind of do also note the calories. My target is 1500 per day. If it seems like I'm low on calories for the day, I might have an evening snack; if I'm around 1400-1500 calories already, I might skip that, or have a smaller snack.…

My easiest answer is to point out that I've lost 45 pounds eating 75% of my calories from fat. Really important that you do some of the reading. If you don't take some time and effort to learn and understand how and why this works, you will not stick with this. Keto goes against EVERYTHING we were told about nutrition. You…

Mine are 75% fat, 20% protein, 5% carbs. I follow keto. Part of my goals are to maintain ketosis. It's similar to Atkins induction maintained for a long period. For Keto, Net Carbs should remain in the 20 g range (I tend to be around 20-30 g). Protein needs to be moderate -- excess protein can convert to glucose. And the…

All of the rules youve been told are flipped when you do keto. Keto is Low Carb, HIGH Fat, Moderate Protein. Switching over to high fat is a huge mental shift - and essential for success. Grains are carbs, and carbs are just sugars.

If you want to know a little bit on keto - Keto in a nutshell (Thanks Reddit!) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aiHSPoto_YqsNTDvL-g60nytMnyH-CJcCbiAx1IEUYM/edit If you think you might want to try - read this FAQ (Thanks Reddit!) http://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq Guide to acceptable foods (Thanks Reddit!)…

Usually at my classes the trainers ask at the beginning if anyone has any injuries or pain that day. We have one girl who has lost about 50 pounds, but is still pretty heavy, and she has chronic back problems. She and the trainers both ensure she's scaling appropriately. One of my quads was giving me pain during squats…

Absolutely! In my fundamentals, you RARELY did anything with weight. Almost everything is done with PVC pipe. The focus is entirely on Form in fundamentals. And you would be amazed at would a workout it is just to do those exercises with that light piece of plastic.
-
You'll do great! I was also terrified initially and very intimidated. I was a little heavier than you when I first started. I actually did two rounds of Fundamentals because I didn't think I was ready for a real class. Then finally, I started doing 1 class a week. This week, almost a year after my first CF class I'm doing…

There is an individual who seems to have made it her mission to bad-mouth Cross-Fit whenever she sees anything on MFP posted about it. You have likely gotten a private message from her about the so-called dangers of Cross-Fit (I'm assuming you did, since she also messaged me after I posted earlier). Do your own research,…

Here was my response to this individual (loved the analogy to WBC)

I too received a "helpful note" from Health_Gal (?) Totally offensive. I'd like to report this individual to MFP. I feel harassed based on her unsolicited and unwelcome messaging.

The husband and I do crossfit. We had actually started cross-fit last June, and didn't start keto until September. We actually gained weight initially, until we started keto (I don't think it was muscle mass - we ate a lot of ice cream last summer). I think food / nutrition mostly drives the weight loss, while cross fit…

Proper response: because putting butter on it would have been weird. In all likelihood, there's no possibility of having a rational conversation with them (kind of like bringing up low carb on the main MFP forums - they'll turn on you like a rabid dog). Take the high road and thank them for their input, and point…

I used to make this shake quite a bit -- I remember it being like a really yummy milkshake. CAROLINE'S AWESOME LOW CARB SHAKE 1/4 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup cottage cheese [full fat version - preferably 4% milkfat or higher] 1/4 cup egg substitute -- like "Eggbeaters" 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp whey protein…

Many of these recipes should be approached with a lot of caution. 1-2+ cups of fruit, even berries, is a lot of sugar. We're talking 30-40 carbs for a single shake. Please, please, please - load these into MFP and make sure they are consistent with your low carb goals before trying any of these recipes that contain fruit.…

maybe doctors would be out of work if we all were healthier? it is bizarre!

Congratulations! This must be a HUGE relief for you.

My memory of Lyle McDonald's information is that the greatest rate of weight loss occurs during those first 3 weeks as your body becomes keto adapted - primarily because you have your muscles using ketones during that period. (Yes - some of this is water loss, but not all). Once you are fully keto adapted, the muscles are…

I really like this site's explanation: http://www.ketotic.org/2012/05/keto-adaptation-what-it-is-and-how-to.html

I found this site to have a very good explanation: http://www.ketotic.org/2012/05/keto-adaptation-what-it-is-and-how-to.html

Reddit has a keto group. I've gotten a lot of great information there. Be sure to review the sidebar information on the right side. http://www.reddit.com/r/keto/ They have an FAQ as well - http://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq

I'm not much of a cheese eater, but I tend to have issues with constipation. That said, I wasn't very regular before LCHF either.

Unfortunately, trying to get sweetness without something having carbs or sweetener isn't really possible. The sweetness has to come from something. If you're unwilling to use stevia, artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols, then that doesn't leave much option. I would go with Dark chocolate. Lindt extra dark chocolate…

I eat onions too. Small onion is 7 carbs. The husband and I might split one in a meal. 1 red pepper is another 4 carbs. That's 11 carbs total. Split for two people would be 5.5 carbs. 27 carbs for a single meal is a LOT of onions and peppers. Are you sure the quantities you've been eating are that much?

I did almost very day for the first couple of weeks - mornings only. That's when we figured out that my husband was really sensitive to carbs and high protein, and needed to maintain about 75% fat to maintain ketosis. These days it's maybe once every week to two weeks, mostly after we've eaten something a little…

The Atkins frozen meals have surprisingly good macros and ingredients. I've used them on occasion and they are pretty tasty. I've only found them at Walmart - not at my standard grocery stores.

I've just started taking Vitafusion Fiber Well Gummies. yummy. I definitely look forward to these every day, vs conveniently forgetting when I've tried supplementing with some other products.

There is a subreddit called ketogains that is focused on low carb, while building lean body mass. I think you want info onTKD - Targeted Ketogenic Diet. http://www.reddit.com/r/ketogains/ the right hand side var has a lot of material.

Gary Taubes has an article on exercise and weight loss. "The Scientist and the Stairmaster: Why Most of us BElieve that Exercise Makes us Thinner - And Why we're Wrong". Basically, the more you exercise, the more you eat. I've also noticed that the non low-carb ers dismiss when they have exceeded their carb targets. Some…
