  • I use the Polar RS400. Love the ability to program exercises and track results, but the accuracy and quality are substandard. It will hang up at a certain heart rate for 15 seconds, then drop 10 beats per minute in a blink of an eye. That's very frustrating when some of your aerobic zones are 9 beats per minute apart. I…
  • First, have a blast reconnecting with friends and family. You only live once, and celebrations like these are the finer side of life! To deal with your predicament, consider choosing healthier options whenever possible. Drink as much water as you can (that'll help with hangovers, too!), fill up on lean protein (cut as much…
  • It's human to want immediate results. It's also human to seek empathy, maybe even sympathy. But, if you didn't know it coming in, you should know it now - living healthy takes committment and hard work. We all get frustrated sometimes. But, ask yourself "what are my options?" Let's see... you could quit, maybe grab a…
  • Swiss Miss diet cocoa mix - 25 calories, Jello sugar free instant chocolate pudding - about 90 calories (1/2 cup), Edy's fat free, no sugar aded chocolate ice cream - 100 calories (1/2 cup). But, like many others,my #1 chocolate fix is the Dove dark chocolate promises - 40 calories.
  • My advice? Go see your Doctor TODAY. I tweaked my back last summer playing golf and figured it would just go away. It felt stiff, but far from debilitating. Instead, it seemed to get progressively worse until I could barely move w/o sharp pain. When I went to the Doctor, he told me it usually takes as long for the injury…
  • I'd add some protein sources... Canned chunk tuna in water, fat free cottage cheese, frozen cooked tail-on shrimp (Wal Mart sells a 14 oz bag for $5). I'd also add Quaker weight control oatmeal (some protein, lot's of fiber and very filling on a cold AM), roasted almonds (good snack with protein, fiber and good fats...)…
  • Didn't see the ad you mentioned, but had to LOL when I saw the Pizza Hut ad promoting the Big Dipper pizza. Ironic, yes?
  • I've heard of a product on MFP called a "Body Bug" that might not require a chest strap, but I know nothing about it. When it comes to choosing an HR monitor, it really depends on what you want it to do. You can buy a low-end Polar monitor and it will measure HR and calories. Simple, inexpensive, usually under $100. I use…
  • Welcome to MFP! You will find that most prepared/packaged foods are heavy in sodium, calories and carbohydrates. One tip might be to buy some protein supplement - I use whey protein isolate that I bought on-line from a company called Muscle Feast, but I imagine all isolates are about the same. I mix it with Great Value…
  • While it may not help, you might remind your hubby that thin and healthy are independent traits. I've read other posts like yours and the best advice (besides "dump the chump!" which is the most common but perhaps not the best...) I've seen is to try including him whenever possible. If he says he doesn't need exercise to…
  • I think BMI and height / weight charts are two different things. BMI measures lean mass and determines body fat content, whereas height / weight charts just assume everyone has the same frame, bone density and lean body mass. I agree that height / weight charts are trash, but think BMI is indeed useful.
  • There really is no "typical" number of net calories because that depends on your calorie goal, normal level of activity on any given day and exercise (or lack thereof). Always eat your goal amount of calories - that's the minimum amount of calories your body needs to function properly. There is already a calorie deficit…
  • I'd suggest seeing your doctor. There can be myriad reasons why this happens, including inner ear infection, etc. Never play around when you experience unusual sensations while exercising... seek a qualified, professional opinion.
  • I'm not an expert, but I believe the Polar monitor is more accurate than the readouts on fitness equipment. For starters, if you don't provide an age and weight, the machine will use default parameters which may or may not even remotely resemble your parameters. And, consider the effect of use and maintenance; most…
